Xbox360 HDD question

Featured Replies

Xbox360 Newbie questions -

I have aquired an eggbox.

It is just a bare system , no HDD or memory card. Can I use someone else's HDD just to install the Fall dashboard update to allow me to play Divx. Are the HDD's tied to the Mobo?

Are the updates stored on the HDD , or just cached there and flashed over to the machine?

I can get a loan of a HDD , but wont be using the machine for games just streaming so dont realy want to buy a HDD just so I can install the update.

I can stream Divx using software encoding on the fly with ORB but am not realy happy with the quality.

I think you need the HDD full time but I couldn't say for sure.

yeah your gonna need the HDD as this is where it installs the update.

depends, the really new (arcade?) systems seem to have 256mb internal storage for updates and NXE

Mine wont be that new. And it asks for a storage device when i try to upgrade.

Was just hoping that maybe it was for temp storage first , then flashed over to the machine. As i could borrow a hdd/card for the purpose.

Never mind , looks like i will need another solution.

I did a dashboard update on my Arcade system a few months ago? Is this the one you are talking about or has there been another?

I managed to download it and burn it to a dvd then run the update that way. As mine is not online.

you do need extra storage to get the update.. unless you can get hold of a pre-nxe update.. although im pretty sure the Xbox downloads media updates as and when it needs them. (ie first time you try to play a file)

you should be able to get a old 20gig drive for pretty cheap from the 'bay or gamestation or MS do a 60gb kit thats quite competitive (especially compared to how much shops charge for just a 20gig drive)

Can you still not use a generic IDE / SATA HDD in an eggbox? (too lazy to google :o)

No.. only way to get a hdd on the eggbox is to use a special WD scorpio drive flashed with a certain encrypted firmware.

I just sold a 20GB and 60GB drive, the 20GB especially go for very little money secondhand. Make sure the secondhand drive you get has NEVER been used on a console that has been banned from xbox live, the result if it was could be your console gets banned from live in the future. All xbox peripherals have a unique serial number, as well as the console. MS know whats been connected to what console in the past.

The latest update needs a HDD full time, or a min of 256MB memory card. This is because this update uses the storage device to store settings, and various other system data not used by previous updates. The latest update released a few weeks ago, was a total rewrite of the user interface.

You can plug any fat32 format USB drive into the xbox, however this is only for playing media (MP3, WMA, AVI, DIVX) from. The dashboard will only use an official storage device, you will also need a official HDD/memory card for game saves, and most titles will not run without one connected, so get an official drive and enjoy your console.

Thanks for the replies :)

I did manage to upgrade the dashboard by creating an iso and running from disk.

But as has been said , it is still looking for a storage device to upgrade the rest. I am now looking out for a used 20GB.

You don't need to look too hard. I paid £18 including postage for mine off eBay.

Aye , watching a few on the bay atm. Quite a few people upgraded to the 120 now , so should get one for not too many beer tokens.

Slightly OT , but has anyone got any experience of the Wii streaming software , like X-OOM ?

Play.com (UK) : X-OOM Media Centre For Wii : Nintendo Wii - Free Delivery

It has very mixed reviews , but seems very cheap if it does all that it cliams.

Or has anyone tried using ORB or Tversity streaming to the Wii via the Wii's opera browser ( which i belive was free at one point , but is now 500 points :( )

I tried ORB with the Wii, more out of curiosity than anything - ok for music but you wouldn't really want to watch anything that can be streamed - the quality is fairly bad.

Use the xbox, not a bad media centre especially with the DivX support.
