Windows 7 Beta

Featured Replies

I bit the bullet and have temporarily completely replaced my primary operating system with Windows 7.. so far so good!!

People reported Firefox 3 has problems on it but I'm running it fine!

Give IE8 a go.. its far more stable than the betas in vista, and it intergrates into the new toolbar thingy quite well, giving you access to all your tabs directly from the toolbar

I will do but I like my firefox extensions so much I'll probably never be re-converted to an Internet Explorer user...

RE: integration with task bar, I'm sure the firefox developers will duplicate that soon ;)

In a momen of madness, I reformatted my main desktop machine and installed the 64bit public beta.

I hate to admit it, but I really like it :o

It seems a hell of a lot less cluttered than Vista, but has some really nice, to-my-taste visual niceties without appearing bloated and slow. Maybe I should just have turned these things off with Vista, but as usual, MS seem to hide everything away in wizards and I find it more difficult to get to what I really want.

Touch wood, but in my first 30 minutes (mainly downloading and installing apps), I've been impressed :o

I have partitioned my HDD on my HP notepad and dual boot, it has 3gb memory & turon 64 bit processor, it runs really fast, i have firefox 3.1 beta, and have had no issues with running this app with windows 7 O/S.

My other boot area is vista and in my opinion it is ***** awful and slow. I hope Microsoft dont bloat out windows 7 when its officially released later.

I will be putting Win7 on my AAO when i get the extra memory for it tomorra :)

Question...

For someone who has dual-boot.. can they do a little experiment for me?

Ive been trying to copy some data to a USB stick of mine... and it was really really slow on Win7.. about 500-600kb a second... boot back into vista and its more than 3 times as fast!... can anyone else confirm/deny this?

Just downloading the beta now.....

It's going on our 6 year old PC an Athlon 3000xp 2ghz processor which will have 2 or 3 gb of RAM when it comes to install time and an Nvidia GeForce 5600 ultra grafix card.

I was going to upgrade the PC this year but seeing as i haven't used it for anything but downloading & multimedia server on the network in the house since getting the 360 & wii over the last couple of years i think a spring clean / re-install of XP (Along with the windows 7 beta) and the RAM upgrade will keep the old girl going for what we use it for these days. Might even treat her to a new modern looking case to make her look all modern and trendy. :D

Cheers

Dave.

XP trickery works in 7 as well .Remember I said I couldn't get on line ,because my LAN was not recognised .It's an old Asrock board with a SIS onboard LAN.Directly installing i from the CD desent work ,but win7 detected all my devices -all I had to do was to update driver .And what I said about 7 -take it all back -it's better and faster on this old homebrew than the much vaunted XP

Just done the sdame with another prog that refused to install off the CD .(path is control panel ,device manager ,just like XP, IF IT'S ANY HELP)

I've installed it on an old p4 machine (1.8Ghz).. had to swap the gfx card out (radeon 9200) for something thats actually supported (Nvidia FX5600), and added an extra 1Gb of ram (now 1.5Gb) and win7 is perfectly usable. It wasn't that bad on 512Mb of ram either.

So far I'm quite liking it.:eek: Not more than OSX mind, but it's definitely a vast improvement.

EDIT: I've just run the windows performance test and I got a massive 2.3.

Anyone else suffering from PB issues whilst gaming on Win7?

I have , only on COD4. COD5 , Left4Dead , BF etc are all ok.

Although others have problems with these games.

I get the well documented API kick after a random amount of time. I have tried all the supposed fixes, but other than booting back into XP , I cant get it to not kick me.

What do you mean by PB issues?

Punk Buster not being supported in the Beta.

It wont be fixed until PB release a patch that can detect win7 correctly... i know valve have updated steam to correctly detect and support win7

Have found IE8 causes problems on sites like here -log on ,post ,return to newposts and site asks you to log on again .OK in firefox though .Only thing I can think of is that I have cookie handling turned to prompt -and only let sites I want to be remembered on have cookies accepted (unless it's a site i need to get info from ) .It's easier to limit the number of cookies thisway than every so often go in and clean out the cookie list .Even so the number stored (and suppossed to be deleted when you log off ) is horrendous .Wish IDCIDE would come up with a version for IE7/8 -used it on 5 and the number of tracking cookies had to be seen to be believed .

Sounds like you're running in porn mode. IE 8 has 2 ways to run, normal as per 7, and porn mode with everything locked down tight to avoid infections.

Had a quick look at the safety bit - seems that way -probably keep it that way till I get a firewall on .Prefer Firefox, once I use it a bit more ,might get to be able to close one tab at a time
