Windows 7 and IE8 (beta)

Featured Replies

Well BRISKODA - The Skoda Forum and Community seems to come up ok :-)

Machine takes 45 seconds from end of POST to a usable desktop on my test machine, so not too bad

Don't worry, that'll slow right down once it gets some temp files, general carp, updates and patches on there :P

Any screenshots or anything of particular note?

Steve

Mac dock? ;)

I tried to do a full screenshot of the integration of IE8 tabs and the new task bar but M$ paint (or the OS) has issues with memory; despite having 2gb of ram I couldn't paste the screenshot in to paint because there was not enough memory to complete the operation :D

That's kinda the point though - new evolutions of Windows aren't exactly making better and more efficient use of available hardware are they? I'd hope you'd be able to manage a screenshot with that amount of firepower ;)

Just seems to me that you need more and more power to do the same level of computing (and no, I'm not an Apple fanboi :P)

Steve

P.S. Nice you were looking at my image gallery as well :)

By the way my machine isn't slow.

2gb of ram, 3.00ghz single core processor.. it's not exactly ancient and should be able to deal with modern operating systems with no problems!

i'm not saying yours isn't powerful enough, just there must be an issue with it as thats a higher spec than my old laptop and that copes perfectly fine with vista (1.5Ghz pentiumM, 4Gb ram) and so does my brother laptop(P4 3.0 and 1Gb ram).

P.S. Nice you were looking at my image gallery as well :)

that was just the easiest new tab to open so you could see the way it displays each tab when hovering :)

What was Bill's famous saying? "640kB ought to be enough for anything"

Maybe today's version should be 640MB :P or possible 640GB  ;)

my phone won't even run with only 640Kb of free ram :o

I am running on a dual xeon 2.8Ghz with 6GBs of ram.... Will do some screenshots a bit later. One thing I noticed was there was no taskbar showing what apps were running (had to alt-tab), so something must have been wrong there!

so what's the verdict on my chances of running windows 7 - 2gb ram , AMD 2.8 ,NVIDIA FX5200(128 RAM)) AT ANY SPEED ?

Are they ditching Vista then? I know it's not been a huge success - what will make the next iteration more successful?

this is only a beta nick and windows 7 is just a revamp of vista :)

probably run it fine mate.

That's what I'm hoping when it comes out .Every so often I stick 98 on the dos partition and watch as the PC works at Warp 5:rofl:

Now -just a thought - if I wanted to dual boot XP and windows 7 ( just a theory exercise ), which would occupy the first partition .Logic (thanks Mr Spock) says , DOS,WIN 98,XP :So would it be XP ,Windows 7 ???( and just to remind us of volatile systems 98 on the first one:rofl::eek: )

Not something I'd like to do with a beta ,but something that might be on in times near .

Out of curiousoty -(and I suspect the answer is NTFS) -what is the disc system on Win 7?

It depends how you set it up.. its the bootloader that can cause issues.. i currently have quad-boot machine with win7 and Vista on different partitions on the same drive, and OSx and Ubuntu on separate drives, so can use f2 to boot to them

Was thinking (threoretically ) of part 1 =98:;part 2 = xp pro ; part 3 = win7 ,

but is win7 NTFS ?????

Yes it is NTFS... i think it will install on fat32, but the disk subsystem is optimised for NTFS

windows can also read fat32 ;)

Woweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - miles faster than XP -got xp on first partitionj and 7 on second .Also seems a lot smoother than XP ,and initial instal seems to take up less drive space thasn XP.

Only problem now is finding drivers for things like my onboard LAN.

Just seen a forum on MS where peeps are trying to see what's the lowest spec it will run on .

Well ive got it running on my AAO - 1.5gb ram, Atom 1.6. runs very smooth!

Just downloading the beta now.....

It's going on our 6 year old PC an Athlon 3000xp 2ghz processor which will have 2 or 3 gb of RAM when it comes to install time and an Nvidia GeForce 5600 ultra grafix card.

I was going to upgrade the PC this year but seeing as i haven't used it for anything but downloading & multimedia server on the network in the house since getting the 360 & wii over the last couple of years i think a spring clean / re-install of XP (Along with the windows 7 beta) and the RAM upgrade will keep the old girl going for what we use it for these days. Might even treat her to a new modern looking case to make her look all modern and trendy. :D

Cheers

Dave.
