Coarse sound when applying brakes!

Featured Replies

Experiencing as coarse noise from the brakes when applying the brake, kind of like the noise you get if you haven't used the car for a few days and the discs have rusted over slighty. Thing is I'm using the car everyday.............is this noise generated by a build up of salt grit???

I've check my brake pads all round today, and there is loads of life left in them, likewise the dics. I have also given calipers a good clean with hose, to clear all the gunk and salt off them.

What could it be, its into the dealer on Thursday for warranty repair, its loosing coolant! Should I get them to check me brakes 2!

Always get brakes checked out if you are concerned, they are too important to second guess.

Especially as you're already visiting. I'd give them a buzz beforehand so they know to plan a bit more time as well, IIRC that helps with the scheduling

My Roomster had been doing this this week, and I'm inclined to agree that it is all the salt that has been on the roads.

After a 30 mile drive on Saturday though including some steep downhills it seemed to have improved.

Happening to me most mornings, and likewise checked pads and seen plenty of life. Suspect it is just salt build up from overnight, but get it checked while you're there - no harm in a professional opinion!

possibly a seized caliper

get a hose or pressure jet and give the discs and brakes a good blast, carefully drive it about carefully applying the brakes (and to dry them out) and you should notice the noise gone.

Hey Funkycat - did the dealer find anything? Mine also make this noise, and have done ever since I had the car - although it was very quiet originally.

However the last week the noise has got very loud.

Like you I can not see any fault. It sounds like just driver side rear - but visually it all looks ok. Mentioned it at my last service (9 months ago) but at the time it was a very minor noise and no real irritant...now it is very loud and am a little concerned.

Thanks.

Could it just be you need anti squeak grease on the brakes to stop them squeeking

Is this for real?

Is this for real?

Haha! Hopefully he means on the BACK of the brake pads.. but who knows??

My Octavia II does this too.. when I took it out for a test drive I mentioned it but I was told that it had been sat for a week or so and it was just corrosion on the discs. Well it still does it on daily use, I notice it more in the mornings when I don't have the radio switched on.

I'll probably go back at some point but can't be bothered with the hassle!

I had a similar experience. There was a squeak/grinding noise particularly after turning a corner. I immediately identified it as a stone caught in the brakes rubbing on the disc. I removed the wheel and thoroughly examined the disc and calliper. I could not see see the stone. I am used to DIY maintenance including brakes so was very puzzled and began to doubt my diagnosis. As the car was in warranty I did not disassemble the calliper and took it to the dealer. They immediately said faulty steering rack and wanted the car for examination prior to making a warranty claim and getting authorisation for a repair.

When I collected the car they presented me with a nicely polished stone and a bill for 1 hours labour

Apart from the engagement ring this is the most expensive stone I have owned. Happy my original diagnosis was correct less happy I could not find the stone:(

this is timely - I just left the short stay at Gatwick after leaving the car there all week. I drove down from Herts on Sunday night (don;t think they had been gritting that night).

When I pulled away all brakes were making the worst "grinding" noise I've ever heard. Some much so that 3 levels down I pulled over to investigate. It was the standard rusty covering.....

Must have been aggravated by the cr4p on the roads and ambient cold and damp conditions....After a few minutes driving and stopping it was gone.

Could be a hard bit in the pads. Some pads can be grainy, so you get harder bits and softer bits or friction material. Pretty common in the crap they fit in the factory.

Thanks all. I also think my problem is a stone, but cannot locate. As there is no adverse effect on braking I don't think I'll run the risk of a bill for labour just to find it!

For what its worth it took the dealer some time to work out it was a stone and they had to take the calliper off to remove it. Or so they said. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the Octy brakes could comment, I'm hoping not to need to work on them myself for a couple of years yet:)

I dont have alloys but steels on but is there a quick way of checking the life left in the pads front and rear without taking the wheels off

I had the coarse noise when applying the brakes last week, so this weekend I had all four wheels off and presure washed all of the salt and muck from the wheel arches, suspension, wheels and brakes. I drove it around the block carefully applying the brakes to dry them out. Went out today and the noise from the brakes has gone, so I guess the noise was from the muck & salt off of the roads

I got this horrible sound every morning....in 4 winters in a row.

Indeed, after 2 or 3 times i apply the brakes the noise is gone, so i think probably a mix of rusty covering, salt and the damn wet Dutch winters....
