Grinding rear brakes

Featured Replies

My 56 plate Fabia vRS's rear brakes are grinding badly under any kind of braking.....it has only done 19,500 miles.....do you think it needs new discs and pads already? The discs seem to have ridges in them when I put my finger through the alloy wheel and run my nail over the face.

Any ideas?

I am prepared to do a rear disc and pad change but thought I'd ask your experiences.

Cheers,

Dan

Does seem to have worn early but if they need changing they have to be done. Could have been caused by a bad batch off pads, the main dealer may know if this has been the case. Another cause could the the brake balance valve sending too much force to the rear brakes, if the fronts have only worn a bit and never had replaced. .

Got the same problem on my race blue fabiavrs and the dealer says new discs and pads will sort it but the problem will re- occur again in about 6 months it's all down to brake bais and lack of weight in the rear of the car!

I've had the same problem my "55" plate which has 30k on it. I changed the pads for some delpi one's and its shut them up. The pads were the original one's and were hardly worn i think they are made from granite.

It was worth having the pads out because one of the sliders on the drivers side was starting to seize.:)

Regards Chris

It's a common issue.... Both ours (05 & 06) do it and my polo GTi did before i got the vRS.

As said above i think it's something to do with how little the rears are actually used.

Cheers

Dave.

it has always been a problem on the VRS , some make a grinding noise , some don't , pad material usually the cause , so if you can't put up with it , fit some new pads and clean the rust off the disc edge

It only tends to happen in the winter, think the grit and muck gets in and they corrode a bit. Mine i quiet all summer and then gets noise when the frosts start. Dealers not interested, I give it some handbrake every so often to clear them, or braake heavily to give them a good bedding in. Seems to be down to lack of load on the rears.

I have an 06 with 19000 on the clock, I have just had to have therear discs done because I didnt use them enough. Basically they had weathered overtime. Funny isn't it, don't use something and they need replacing, use them, and they need replacing.

Just noticed mine are doing it on a 07 vRS SE with just under 16k on the clock. I thought about checking the pads to make sure they weren't worn but I might just give them a good bedding in.

Seems it only started in the past week (which it's been very cold and icey in the NW).

I have just replaced the rear discs and pads on my 55 Plate VRS becouse of the same problem, i noticed when re-fitting the rear pads dont even come to the edge of the disc, thus causing uneven wear.

Hopefully the brebo discs & pagid pads i have just put on should last a wee while.

I have this happening on my SE too. its really annoying!

Mine has done 23k and mine is doing it too! :(

I think they all do it. Mine does, a few emergency stops soon gets rid of it for a while.

My 04 vRS grinds too. Its worse in the mornings after a night standing still. Just had a servcice at 34k and the mechanic said the breaks are half worn all the way round but still in good order. I had a petrol fabia before the vRS and it did it too. Just a querk they have it seems...

Glad to see it's not just my 1.4 Elegance that's got this problem. It's a 2005 and has only just clocked up 15,600 miles and it started around December.

I'll have to try a little handbrake to sort it our, wont look quite as dynamic as you VRs boys but I'll give it a go :D

I found the best thing to do is drive about 1/2 a mile with the handbrake 30-50% engaged. This will rub off any rust/surface debris.

It is very annoying though. It constantly sounds like your brakes are fooked.

Seconded for driving with the handbrake on for a bit

Just went to the workshop and complained about the same problem! Done just 10k and this grinding noise started recently. There removed the pads, cleaned everything and reassembled the brakes. then run the axel on the tester and the brakes blocked at the same figure and equally . since than all sounds ok and well. :)

My 07 vRS LE with 16K miles is doing it badly. I checked the rear discs when washing the car today and noticed the discs are badly worn with a fair sized rim still at the extremity of the disc. The pads however don't seem to be worn much. Does anybody know where I can source replacement discs and pads. I am handy enough and also found a great article from Dubai Boy on the forum.

Thanks,

Bulleteer

its funny how the new fabia/polo have gone back to drums on the back!! must be because of this
