Missing door (carrier) seal

Featured Replies

Notice that door seal on rear passenger door was wet, checked and found that carpet was damp so read up on how to seal the carrier up.

Once door card was off and i could get a better look at the carrier etc i notice that so much of the seal was missing and that was leaving the carrier unsupported.

Do i need to drill the rivets out and replace the full seal?

If so with what? Genuine part or any sticky back foam.

Or do i just fill void with sealant whilst doing the rest of the door?

What is best to use as 'sealant'. Normal silicone, or other.

Just Undo all the carrier panels bolts, Apart from the top row, Just slacken these & then tease it away from the door at the bottom, Jam a small handled screwdiver handle in there to keep it away, Dry the seals with a hair dryer & then tube/squirt a good sealer/instant gasket (Water proof Etc) around the Edge & as far up as possible.

Hold the panel away with your fingers & put some sealer where the screw driver was. Put the bolts back & re-tighten. Smooth the sealer out around the carrier & add more as required to completely seal the carrier to the door frame Etc.

Job Done.

his is riveted on from what he is saying, id just put loads of sealer on myself

on 2003/5 (or summat) onwards the bolts were replaced by 64mm ally pop-rivets.

To open up the carrier you have to drill out the heads of the bolts.

Touch up any scratches with paint to prevent rust and then use a "lazy tong rivet gun" that can handle the large pop rivets (available from Skoda)

I'd suggest ear defenders when using the rivetgun - it's like a gun going off when the rivet shank parts..

Blimey,

My 53 plate must of been one of the last to be bolted !!

As said above, Dry out then & just seal up ..
