Cruise Control

Featured Replies

I know there's been issues with these needing replacing. Do they just fail or do they start to intermittently stop first?

Mine wouldn't work when I headed off the other day. When stopped going through the toll bridge I switched off the car and restarted, and it worked again.

Thats how mine went, and now it doesnt work at all. The stalk needs to be replaced, I still have not got round to it.

:mad:That's not what I wanted to hear :(

Feck it !!!!

Just out of interest, approximately how much would a main dealer charge to fit cruise control to a petrol VRS Mk2 ?

I presume that using cruise control on the motorway would improve fuel ecomony, is this correct ? Thanks.

Awesome are doing it for £160 i think , i had it on other cars and cant say i noticed an improvement in economy , liked it for the average speed traps more than anything .

This is exactly what happened when mine went two weeks ago, dropped it into my local Skoda dealer last week and it was replaced under warranty and was back with me later that day.

I was slightly surprised when I noticed that the replacement stalk has different graphics and text printed on it.

dodgy grammer

The older part without the graphics is now obsolete.

Mine has been intermittent for about a year.

I read up on this when I was buying my car... the theory seems to be that cruise control makes sense if you tend to drive on roads that:

a) aren't very busy; you're less likely to be braking now and again which interrupts the cruise control

B) aren't very hilly; if you drive down into a dip and then back up on the other side, the cruise control can't pre-empt this so rather than gently accelerating on the way down to build momentum for the other side, it would actually brake you on the way down and make life difficult for itself on the other side. Not sure exactly how much difference holding an exact speed in this condition compares with accelerating/decelerating (for mpg), but I suppose it could be a factor?

For what it's worth, I had a hire car with cruise control (Jetta), I tried it from Gatwick to Swansea. Didn't think it was that useful really. Even on a moderately busy M4 (it was not rushhour), you can't drive very far without someone pulling out from a slip-road meaning you either have to overtake, or press the brakes (which turns off cruise control).

I found I would try not to press the brakes in this instance, leaving it as late as I could, because I knew it would de-activate cruise control. So I found it actually encouraged me to drive more dangerously!

My personal opinion is that most roads in the UK are not long enough and too busy to make effective use of cruise control :thumbdwn:

Use mine all the time, mainly on longer straights of course!

Setting it at xxmph with loads of cameras is great as well as on the motorway.

You'll probably only have issues with people pulling out on you if you're going above 70mph. As you can accelerate then let off with the CC still engaged at the pre-set speed over taking people is as easy.

Plan ahead and CC makes a lot more sense, go everywhere quickly then it won't work as well.

Fair enough if it works for you, but I drive approx 70mph (honest!) on the motorways, I found that if I wanted to keep the CC engaged then I'd have to often overtake rather than slow down by 1mph if I wanted to keep CC active.

If I'm driving along at 70mph and approach a sliproad and someone is pulling into the motorway, without CC I just ease off a few mph, and then gradually pick up speed again.

With CC, I either brake gently and deactivate CC, or have to overtake, which often means accelerating quite a bit (80mph?) because I'm moving out into the "overtaking" lane!

I agree that CC is good for your license though, it makes it impossible to have your speed run away without noticing. I often find my speed creeps up if I'm not careful.

Mine went the same way, if it helps - intermittent "wouldn't engage", or "would engage but then wouldn't resume after brake/clutch". I thought I was just imagining it at first, until it pretty routinely wouldn't do as it was told. A warranty change of the stalk to the new type and it's worked fine ever since.

I don't know how old the OP's car is, but I'd argue that this is a known fault (enough of us have had to have the new stalk fitted, after all) and therefore a manufacturing defect that's inherent in the vehicle. As such, consumer law could apply if you've had it from new (assuming that the "fit for purpose" clause applies in Ireland as it does the UK, which is a not unreasonable assumption).

mine went the other week then i tried this to reprogram it with vag com:

[select]

[01 - Engine]

[Login - 11]

Enter 11463 to activate cruise control

[Do It!]

try that first just in case (like mine) its forgotton its got cruise control.

Not on a TFSi though eh ;)

Slight thread hijack - my cruise is STILL intermittent, dealer can't find anything wrong but I did:

1 Fault Found:

00888 - Wiper Switch for Intermittent Operation (E22)

014 - Defective

Would that upset the cruise seeing as it doesn't actually control it?

They are connected via the common steering controller.
