Are they summer/winter/all-season?

Are they summer/winter/all-season?

I'd say they tend towards summer tyres. They are pretty popular on here.

More miles and some pretty unpleasant weather last night too.

Lots of standing water and not once did the traction control light come on when entering it. This is something that would regularly happen with the falkens and continentals on the car when the water was as deep as last night.

While I won't say they transformed the road into a dry road all by magic, they certainly had a seriously good amount of road holding in the very wet conditions.

Another thumbs up, so I guess I just have to find out how they cope with snow etc and also how they cope through a long summer.

Unfortunately, I can't get your WR tyres in my size: 205/60/R15.

However, you are convincing me that I want to get some all-season tyres next time!

I never really drive fast these days (much less so since I got the Octy anyway, I got all that out of my system with the MX-5), so I don't need great dry road cornering ability etc etc.

OH HANG ON!! I've just double-checked and I can get them in my size after all!!

That changes things then. I'm going to have to re-read over this thread, I'm tempted to buy some new tyres soon and just keep them in my garage for 3-6 months until I need to change them...

There are a few other tyres I'm also interested in, I'll round up the details and post again soon :)

As far as I can see, these are the contenders:

Nokian WR All Weather Plus

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons (annoyingly, these aren't listed at Goodyear-All Season , only at Goodyear-All Season

Vredestein Quatrac 3

Pirelli P2500

You've praised the Nokian WR All Weather Plus in your previous posts, what made you choose them over the others?

One other thing, where did you get your Nokians?

Well I was going to go for Quatrac 3, but the suppliers said they couldn't get them and the places that could wanted silly money for them so I read lots of reviews and a recommendation from somebody I know for them and decided to give them a go.

Personally I'd avoid the P2500 and I have heard that the good years while good in winter are particularly poor in the summer. I guess that leaves the two choices WR/WR-G2 or Quatrac 2/3 that I originally started this thread for :)

I must admit I prefer the look of the Nokians, have you got any pics yet?!

How much did you pay for them (and where from)?

I've also noticed, annoyingly, they categorise them as "winter", BUT say in the description that they "are fit for all year use"

I'm 100% happy they are all-season, but it's annoying when the tyre companies can't even get it right!

Sounds about the right price.

As for the P2500, I have seen so many pirelli get eggs in the side walls that I've given up using them (inside and outside side walls, so can't all be said to be kerb damage).

Also they stop at H rated, rather than V.

Would you believe it, we have snow down here. Mainly very wet roads with a bit of slush, but it is settling in a few places and down around the 1 degree mark.

Guess I'll be able to comment more after today.

Your Nokians are well-rated on Test reports for all-season tyres, although I take these reviews with a pinch of salt, they are barely a scientific comparison!

I'm quite tempted to buy a set and keep them for 6 months (or however long my Dunlops last). Probably cheaper now during the recession

(I can see the future here though; I'll buy these and then I'll be much more secure in snow/ice/rain/cold weather, but someone will probably skid into me from behind on cheap balding summer tyres...)

Get out and do some driving (and photography) then :D

I'm in work, but certainly had no issues getting onto the major roads. It wasn't a patch on what we got back at the start of feb though.

Very snowy here today, motorway out of Belfast was the worst I've seen it in 15 years of driving, inside lane very wet, outside lane 2-3" snow across most of the lane. Could have done with decent tyres, a few slippery moments when folks in front decided it was a good plan to stand on their brakes before changing lanes, or changing lane into my braking area. The 3.5mm NCT5 on the front were a bit poor.

Just across the water in Galloway we had no snow:thumbdwn:

Still happy with your purchase? I've just checked mytyres and they are now £65.20 (were around £70), they are rated H (were they H before?) but I rarely reach 80mph let alone 130mph these days, so shouldn't be an issue for me :D

I'm tempted to buy some this evening and just stick them in the garage for a few months till I need them. No pics yet?!

The reason I got V is because my car can according to the book and the autobahn + GPS do in excess of 130mph.

I'm still very happy with the tyres.

The only slight negative is that they will spin up if you plant your foot in 1st in the damp, but that's kind of very obvious and the case with all tyres IMHO.

Definitely recommend them or the WR G2 if you want the same tyre a bit more targeted at the drier months.

I doubt that spin up would be an issue for me, I just don't drive like that.

Is that basically the difference with the G2 then? They seemed quite a bit more expensive when I checked?

What kind of wear rate are you expecting from the WR? I seem to recall they are well-rated, but are they well-rated for an all-season tyre, or well-rated compared to all tyres?

I accept that an all-season tyre might well be compromised here a bit, but I'm wondering how much a "bit" is likely to be...!?

Can't see any obvious signs of wear as yet, their rating is 420, so compare them to your current summer tyres to see how the ratings compare. 100 is the reference tyre and 200 is twice as long lasting, 300, 400 etc etc you get the idea.

The G2 is an asymmetric design which is supposed to be better in the dry due to a more solid outer edge. The Quatrac 3 takes the same idea too to enhance dry weather performance.

What's the easiest way to check wear rating, is it on the tyre wall? Or is it a website search?

Any idea what the wear rating of the Quatrac 3 is? Or my Dunlop SP01s for that matter?

How did the Quatrac 3s compare for wear, during the research you did?

I found the wear rating on the tyre wall, it's 280. That's a hell of a difference to your Nokians

Do all tyre makers use the same reference, i.e. is a 100 tyre from one the same as a 100 tyre from another?

I should be munching rubber 50% faster than you if these figures are true!!
