Nokian WR vs Vredistein Quatrac 3

Featured Replies

It looks like the "all weather plus" is a new(ish) tyre, it's not listed in the summer/winter tyre sections (there is no other section that I can see!).

It sounds in the press release like it's very much in the same mould (heh, sorry) as the Quatrac 2/3...

M&S/M+S/MS etc = Mud and Snow, it is not a test of any sort it just means that the tread has a certain amount of it open.

The snowflake alone I don't think has any specific meaning.

The snowflake in a mountain is the Canadian test, proving suitability for "Sever Weather Service"

More info here:

Snow Tyres Severe Service Emblem

The Quatrac3 was the tyre I asked about, which according to Vredestein only has the snowflake alone, which has no official meaning as far as I can tell. (Willing to be corrected here)

The Quatrac2 pdf here does indeed show a snowflake in a mountain:

Ditto on the infor page:

Vredestein

The Quatrac3 is here and says it complies, but the snowflake isn't the same as a snowflake in a mountain, they say snowflake not snowflake in a mountain and as I said the supplier confirmed it wasn't there:

Vredestein

Make of that as you will, because it's certainly a bit confusing to say the least.

This explains things:

CanadianDriver: Product Review - Nokian WR "All-Weather Plus"

It's the Nokian WR "All Weather Plus"!

Yep, seen that but interestingly speaking to people the WR all weather plus, is the same tyre as the WR but with a different name for the US/Canada Market.

The tyre most like the Quatrac 3 is the WR G2 I think as that has a similar asymetrical pattern.

Either way I'll find out soon :)

The Quattracs are all weather tyres not out and out snow tyres whereas the Snowtrac and snowtrac extreme etc. are out and out snow tyres.

Yes, make sure you report back on your findings ;)

Ironically though after all this, the WRs aren't available in my tyre size! (205/60/R15)

Which is fine, but not in the UK as they will compromise dry road handling and the Quatrac/WR All weather should deal with our occasional snow storms better than generic all season/summer tyres.

Apparently the Quatrac is popular in Scotland for this very reason.

Well they are on and first impressions are not at all bad.

A little bit slippery when the power went down, but that's just the release compound wearing off. You could tell this as they were much better after a trip up the motorway.

Will report back when they have a few hundred miles on them.

So just to clarify, what tyre did you go for in the end and in what size?

Now you've got them the birds are singing and the flowers coming to bud as if spring is on the way.

Tyre is indeed branded as Nokian "All Weather Plus". It has M+S (pretty meaningless) and snowflake on the mountain (winter suitable) symbols, but also has a tread wear rating (420) and temperature/traction ratings of A as per a summer tyre.

It looks exactly the same as the nokian WR, and mine are 94 V rated, in 205/55 R16

Things are a bit variable still, but yes the snow is most likely over. These things are however apparently good for all seasons and are defiantly good in water which I think we'll see a fair amount of.

So far I will say one thing about these tyres, which is they are quieter than the falken 452 which came off, which were already quieter than the original tyres.

Coolio. Any pics with them on the car?

That's why I got my Quatrac 3's, forest roads muddy farm tracks and standing water on the highway. Seem to perform well in this..

I'll try and get some when it's light over the next few days.

These are certainly much better than the old ones on the usually quite slippery damp road surface, which was a pleasant bonus.

How are your Quatracs wearing?

Wearing pretty well. Got them in end Nov will have done just over 5000m on them. No noticeable wear but haven't measured them. Don't know if the wear rate will be higher than normal when the warmer weather comes, I won't be surprised if it is. Have had Sportracs and Ultracs before from Vredestein and found them good, so much so that I got the tyre place to order them in if not in stock. Usual price £55 to 60 for 195/65 r15 v which again is good.

Regarding the Quatrac 3's maybe on dry cornering the car runs a wee bit wider if pushed, but you soon get used to it and adjust accordingly. I've never felt that they are about to lose traction. Most my driving is on fast rural roads with more than a fair share of potholes. Maybe slightly noisier and a few less mpg.

Car is due MOT in a couple of weeks may switch tyres front to back.

Strange as it seems I also like the look of them especially when covered in mud(car and tyres).

Well a very unexpected side effect, but over the days since i've had the new tyres on, the MPG has gone up by around 5-6 mpg for the same journey.

If that holds up that's going to make a small but noticeable difference over every tank and one that is much more noticeable over the year.

If that holds up I'll be buying some myself!!

Although I'm a long way from needing new tyres, at the moment I'm leaning towards "all season" of one type or another. In my area of the UK, only 3 months of the year are generally 7C or below (on average). But I do tend to drive to hillier upland areas now and again for leisure purposes, so I think I'd like tyres more geared towards that.

If I don't get "all season" though, I'd strongly consider replacing with the same OEM tyres. I figure if Skoda thought they were up to the job, the odds are they offer a decent compromise?

On OEM tyres, I think it's more along of the line of if thought they were up to the job then obviously got a good price on them when they were building cars ;)

True enough, but they are Dunlops so I don't suppose they are awful.

If I can't find a good reason to change to a different tyre, I think I could do worse than stick with OEM.

That said though, I'm leaning towards all-season next time. All I'm saying is if I don't make a "major" change and decide to stick with Summer tyres, then I'll consider sticking to things as they are...

Don't know about branded tyres not being awful. Goodyear eagle nct5 that I had once were very poor especially noticed a 10% drop in economy. When I raised the issue with Goodyear they weren't interested.

How old are your dunlops as I'm sure there were many on here who had issues with them splitting before they hit 4 years old.

So they tyres now have 500 miles on them, grip is good, even when cornering pretty fast, wet grip in standing water is leagues above the previous tyres I've had on the car, and the wet/damp grip is also good.

Dry roads don't seem to give too many problems and they are still nice and quiet.

The long term average on the trip computer is 7mpg better than on the old tyres. While some of this will be down to the increased temperatures, I think the tyres have probably accounted for 4 or 5 of this. I'll be checking out the figures for brim to brim against old ones recently.

So far however I'm impressed.

The car's only 11 months old (I've had it for 4, just about), I do approx 80-100 miles a day, so I suspect I'll be changing tyres a long time before they hit 4 years old.

Sounds like the new tyres are doing well, I'll def look into those in the future (although I seem to recall they didn't do my size anyway...)

Well about 1500 miles on them now and sure enough the MPG is still up from the old tyres that were not fully worn.

The tyres still grip correctly up to about legal limits and no problem putting the power down or going around the corners.

Big thumbs up from me, I'd definitely consider a set of these if you don't want the ultimate summer performance, but just want good all round performance and the ability to deal with the cold/wet.

Thanks for doing all the spadework on this one - It fits the bill perfectly for my next set of tyres in the Wilds of Wales .
