No boost!

Featured Replies

Whats going on?

Got up this morning and set off as usual. Everything seems fine.

I travel a mile or two to warm the car up a bit as i normally do, but when I get to the motorway and want to open it up down the sliproad, theres no power - the turbo refuses to spin up. So i drive a normally aspirated 1.8 all the way to work.

There's no other symptoms apart from the lack of turbo whistle and power, car otherwise runs smooth and quiet, no warning lights etc.

I'm confused?!?! Any ideas?

BTW its an Octy vRS.

A couple of things..

1) FUBAR DV

2) You hit the rev limit or boost limit and the cars in limp mode.

Should be able to tell with VAGCOM.

Mine does this quite regular but can`t explain why and neither can the dealer but i usually find that when the problem ocuurs then all i do is switch the ignition off then back on and my boost comes back

Do a search for fault code 17705 or lack of turbo pressure and you'll find some very familiar complaints... Could be MAF, DV, N75, EGR, throttle body or simply a damaged hose causing a boost leak.

Here's one very informative thread for starters: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7798&highlight=17705

Had this happen to me three times in the past four or five months - nothing serious yet, but will check up with my dealer during the Dutch new Octavia launch on Friday week.

Thanks, I will have a read.

Didn't get chance to drive the car until coming home from work. Guess what - its back to normal...

I'll take it in anyway for a code check when i get chance.

Slightly off topic (maybe) but could someone explain the throttle body thing ie cleaning etc What I mean to say is that as these cars are DBW, what needs cleaning or adjusting? What is mechanical and what isn't? I know about the 'door open, hood up, ignition on, beeps etc' bit but what else is there?

Sounds like something amiss is killing the boost - It was the MAF for me which (when it was intermittent) was killing the boost all together. Kill ignition, start it up again - oooh, luvverly boost again! Then down the road half a mile, all gone again. I'd suspect a MAF myself. Maybe some boost limits are being exceeded though?

Had a read of the thread above and this jumped out at me because mine does this as well every now and again....

- initially, but not as noticable now was the sudden drop in power when taking off at around 2500 rpm

So it sounds like the same problem others have had. Into the dealer it goes...

Since I wrote this I had it happen a couple of more times but only last week did I grab the opportunity to ask my dealer.

They had inadvertently set the service warning on short intervals instead of variable, so here I was having driven only 15k kms since the last service and wondering WTH was going on here! I asked about the occasional turbo-pressure drop being a possible reason and they immediately said, 'Oh, but do check in on us soon, and we'll replace the lot under warranty! We'll stick some better stuff in and you will feel you have gained some more power...' (2-year warranty here instead of 3.)

And so I did. They replaced the throttle body, turbo pressure hose and N75 and afterwards more or less admitted to this being a recall, even though I shouldn't see it as one... 'Every customer complaining about this in his warranty period will have all of this replaced with no questions asked. So it's somewhat short of a recall but in fact it nearly is.'

Any similar dealings in the UK or is this Skoda NL going their own way?

Oh, the early service warning had nothing to do with it. That was simply a reset gaffe at the 30k kms service...

In case you were wondering - yes, they were right. :D

I have the same problem with my 2002 octaviaRS . In vag-com the fault 17705 shows up.

My dealers has replaced the intercooler hose with no success. part number replaced was 06A 145 790C but still got the problem. it seems that the problem shows up more often when the outside temp drops below 0 C.

My DV is replaced by a Forge so that could not be the problem right?. So what than?

That code is basically a "drop in boost pressure" somewhere in the system.. I had this for many months!!

Check DV, all turbo hosing... there will be a leak somewhere....

when is was browsing the vwvortex forum i have read someting about a smoke test to find out where the leaks are.

Does anybody know how this test is done?

Apart from the occasional drop in power at 2500rpm when cold mine wasn't completely loosing boost like yours. The last thing to be changed on mine was the DV (dealer said they stick open when cold), I'm going to go back into the Dealer in the New Year to make sure this has rectified it. They also cleaned the throttle body which seems to have improved the idling.

The intercooler pipe was also changed before but the problem was still appearing.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I had the fault on mine for 3 years so I hope its sorted.

Theres been 4 or 5 threads on this issue, heres a few dunno if they'll be much help.

Have now done some more miles since the aforementioned warranty replacements. And yes, while there is undoubtedly a bit more power - acceleration interval timings prove that - it is also delivered more progressively. The big-bang thump of yore is gone, and it sounds as if the engine is noisier too, making a slightly coarser sound.

Does this sound familiar to anyone who's had his trottle body replaced?

BTW, not too bothered with it - in fact, the progressive power is more useful in the lower rev range, and throttle responsiveness has improved as well. But there is less, erm, excitement, that's for sure.

  • 2 weeks later...

As for the above observation - just happened to be in the neighbourhood of my dealer's and he confirmed that the replacement throttle body is a bigger-size one, hence the better responsiveness but less all-at-once oomph.
