312mm - Worth it ???

Featured Replies

im considering getting these done next month, my front brakes dont need doing urgently but will need doing this year, and its my birthday next month

the thing is, i dont and never will track the car, 95% of the time i dont drive it that quickly either to be honest, i nurse my cars and look after them

i dont find the front brakes all that good, i always find myself braking, then as im slowing down adding a bit more pedal pressure as it wasnt enough, im wondering if lowering it will stop it bobbing down at the front so much, so i can get a better feel of how much the car is actually slowing down

cost wise, fitted its gonna cost £400, whereas i can see OE replacements costing half that, maybe less, but, and its a big one, if i fit new ones are they going to be much better, will i wish id spent the cash on the 312's ?

i know its a very common mod, but my modding days are over, my first car, a K reg 1.4 Clio, had a Renault 5 Turbo engine put into it with mods galore, my next one, another Clio but this time a 1.8 16v had full exhaust system, chip, cams, decat, numerous suspension mods, basically ive had enough of fiddling with things and declaring a list a mile long to the insurance every year

i was hoping a change to the Fabia vRS would be everything i was looking for, cheaper to run, cheaper insurance, newer car for me, and still quick and nimble, the speed of its fine i dont mind that, it does all i want it to, but the suspension lets it down in a big way from what im used to, even my 1.4 Clio before i did any mods could out handle this, they are like a boat lol

anyone on here changed their brakes to simply OE stuff again, was there any difference ?.........im not gonna bother with uprated stuff of the OE size, done that a million times before and its a total waste of cash, if bigger will fit they will be better so its either OE standard size, or OE 312 gear

Rear anti roll bar and 312mm brakes and your done

Think of it this way your just doing what Skoda should have in the first place :thumbdwn:

312mm are so so worth it they inspire 10 times more confidence, and they last longer too ;)

Surely better brakes are worth it even if they stop you hitting something/someone, that you would otherwise hit, just once?

Would be top of my mod list.

I would have had them on my Fabia if I hadn't fitted Brembos.

Ive got 312's, and there great. but if your getting bigger alloys, you can go bigger.

Dont buy them new, go to a scrappy and get them off a car. Dont ask 'how much for these mate', say 'ill give you £100 bucks for those mate'.

saw them but they cost a bomb !

a whiteline RARB is also on my radar, but not just yet, want to get a few hundred in my savings first just in case

i wont ever be getting bigger wheels, i like the OE wheels a lot, in both design and size

Brakes, then RARB.

Those, along with Cupra bushes are the only things the Fabia VRS really "needs" IMHO.

The sensible time is as you say, after you've worn the existing pads - gives you time to save up for the upgrade, get them in good time, do the painting to green if you wanted to, and work out how to fit them either yourself or by someone here ;)

Especially as you're not in a big hurry, that might be a good idea :)

IMHO they are a top upgrade, mainly because they just won't fade in non-track use, potentially with exception of virtual luny driving for example. I also would recommend them as they give much, much more braking feel, the pads last longer too.

They fit under the stock vRS wheels (16 inch) as well as the steel spare without issue, although they are fairly snug :)

Sorry to semi hijack this thread, but this may be of interest to you too BRUN...

I'm new to Fabias, but a couple of my friends who do a lot of their own VAG mods on a golf and an A3 both said that when they uprated their brakes to 312 they just bought new discs and carriers and used the original 288 calipers. Could that be a possibility on a Fabia VRS? The A3 had a set of posh discs and a pair of Audi TT 225 carriers from a scrapper for £50 a pair.

The reason I ask is that I have seen numerous people here say you need a full caliper, carrier and disc kit, yet two friends who have done a similar VAG mod say different.

Thanks in advance for any views/experiences/information that can be given! :)

PS, picking my baby (VRS, not actual baby) up tomorrow morning, not much sleep for me tonight!! haha

Short answer they are worth it !

The fabia vrs uses a different caliper to other VAG marques which is why going to 312mm's on a fabia vrs will require Calipers / Carriers / Discs / Pads. If you have a non vrs fabia you will also require the hubs too.

To the OP,

Upgrading to 312mm was certainly worth it on my octi so I can't imagine how much better the upgrade will be on the fabia vrs, I will find out soon though as I've just bought a kit for SWMBO's fabia. We notice a massive difference in braking efficiency between my octi and her fabia, the 312mm are way better.

i was fairly sure the calipers were the same but most go for new calipers as the price difference is very little and it gives them time to clean and paint etc.

On the Fabia VRS the calipers are NOT the same.

You NEED new calipers in order to fit 312mm brakes.

Tut tut

I guess they worth it!They totally worth it to go from 256mm to 288mm on my 1.4 fabia. So why not worth it?Must say my brother's octy VRS has great braking.Imagine from 200km/h you just need to touch the pedal and the speed drops instantly to 100 km/h!I wish I had done the 312 setup too.Go for it:)

piffle.

having just taken off my 312s , yes the are worth it ,

my standard set up is carp in comparison, but they may require a bit of a bleed , so i wont condemn them totally , yet

312's? As far as mods are concerned they're right up there with the best. Don't hesitate!!!

hmmmmm, seems everyone is in agreement then, even though they are double the cost of me replacing the OE stuff

What has your birthday got to do with larger brake discs?

  • Author

ill have some extra cash to buy em thats why

different car i know, but i too only drive sensibly and have recently fitted 300mm brakes from an ST170 to my Focus, using just the blando £40odd Mintex brake box parts, and they're real good and a noticable improvment from standard
