Hifi amplifier question???

Featured Replies

I have a Marantz PM-4400 amplifier which is great for sound quality for a small room but my question is i want a little more sound quality out of it and noticed on the back it has another set of speaker outputs???? Does this mean i can buy another set of speakers and run all 4 which means more power and quality or is it this bi-wireable thing which i dont understand?? Is it worth it or shall i buy bi-wireable speakers?? Cheers people

If your current amp has another set of speaker connections, you can easy fix up another set of speakers to it. You may also have a switch/button on the front to switch between speakers or have both on. Looking from a pic on Google I think you have.

Bi-wireable speakers have 2 separate connections (4 connectors), one pair for the tweeter and one pair for the Bass. In an Ideal world or high-end Hifi, you connect the main amp (pre or integrated amp) to the tweeter and have a separate Power amp to drive the Bass, this is known as Bi-Amping. I think you can still use Bi-wireable speakers with a single amplifier.

Cheers mate i think i understand now as it does have a switch button between speakers A & B. Might have to find an old pair of speakers to see if there are any benefits of 4 speakers

Alternatively you could buy some better speakers, if you want better sound. I would suggest something like the Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom Speakers for £100ish. See TANNOY MERCURY F1 CUSTOM SPEAKERS (PAIR) - from Superfi UK

Remember adding additional speakers does not necessarily mean better sound quality.

What speakers and cable do you have as a starting point...

Seems unlikely that 2 more speakers will improve the sound unless you are overloading the current speakers, in which case it is a better idea just to buy 2 new better ones, then worry about bi wiring

I have some Pioneer S-H310V speakers http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/a...-QL/media.html

I recently moved back home with my parents and forgot I had all this stuff!

Was thinking of just buying smaller speakers as my room is pretty small and might improve the quality

I have a PM4000, so probably similar- it has 2 sets of terminals that can be switched. It's b-wired with some decent cable with some Gale Gold Monitor Mk2 speakers on stands. The biwiring and good cable did improve things.

You could add more speakers but that won't improve quality. Get good cable, good stands, and good speakers and bi-wire them. What speakers do you have now?

I'd go for a cable change first :).....its way cheaper than new speakers and youl be amazed at the difference that a simple change can make:)

Would have to agree on the decent cable option as a starting point. Followed by bi-wiring if it's feasible. That would give an upgrade you would still be able to use if you did change your speakers. Decent stands will also make a difference, but try re-positioning your existing speakers first. some work better near walls, some in "open space". You might be suprised what a difference that can make

very true uncle bulgaria.....i have some floor standers that when pushed up against the wall fill the room with bass:) .....a good floor, good stands, good spikes, good cables will all make a big difference:) .....but every room is different so if your mate has the same system it will sound different in his house than yours!!

Everyone's talking about the speakers & speaker cable.... What about the source equipment?? What do you need to improve sound-wise. What do you not like about the sound?

If it is CD's then a good upgrade is an external DAC (if your CD has a digital out).

Also, what interconnects are you using? If they are the cheap and nasty one's then these will be holding you back. A good rule is to spend approx 10% of the cost of your system on the interconnects.

probably cos its cheaper to sort the cable end of things first rather than change a CD player or the like:)....it goes without saying that you would change the speaker cable connectors aswel......as for the leads to the amp and CD you can spend huge amounts and not really change the sound that much!!...where as messing around with cable and positioning will give you a huge difference in sound for very little money:)

Depends on what the problem with the sound is to start with, hasn't been made that clear yet.

doesnt really matter.....just start with cables and see where it takes you:) Think his prob is old set of speakers in a small room!.....nothing drastic:)

If you want to recable on the cheap use 2 core bell wire

The additional 2 speaker outputs are there originally for you to run them into another room so you can use one hifi in two rooms, if you hook 4 speakers up you will get a fuller sound as it's being directed at you wherever you stand in the room but it does play with the stereo effect, this is where you split the two speakers up at the right distance apart and get the music to merge to obtain the correct effect, rather than just sound firing at you, hth.
