Didn't really look down to check, but think the road was only a few miles long. . . as said in previos posts, im guessing its not actually 140, but indicated on the speedo as 140.?

Indicated 140 was about 120mph IIRC from my last go at this. I've been behaving myself for a long time now so this is from memory.

It is still fast. Regardless of it being on a real private road or not, let's just say I hope it was in a safe area ;)

Read a few posts back again, and the usual heated debate kicked in ;) Personally I am of the opinion that it is speed difference that kills, not speed itself.

I can drive any speed I like, but if the other traffic vs my speed gives a big difference, then it's dodgy. Ignoring the legal aspects ;)

I used to have a genuine private road, and that was fun whilst it lasted :D

:)

How can an indicated 140mph be true 120??? An indicated 149-150 was a true 146 on my Road Angel. I can understand some degree of error which is understandable, but 20mph out?

That's what it was on my TomTom vs my speedo - in the estate the difference was even bigger

I would be more inclined to trust my speedo than what in relative terms is a basic GPS device. Whilst it will suffice for getting you where you need to go, the technology simply isn't sophisticated enough to give an accurate ground speed. The refresh rate i'm sure is partly to blame for this.

Thats not to say of course that the speedo is right. My guess is that they are both wrong and the true speed is somewhere in the upper-quartile range of the difference in speed between the two readouts.

.

 At a constant speed the GPS is about as accurate as it gets. The speedo on any car should read over the actual speed by law iirc.

GPS you say?

That was trying to keep up with PP on t'autobahn...

Suffice to say I know my GPS is dead accurate at 105mph. I know this as I was on cruise and I got 3 points to prove it..

OP- Which chip do you have to get 180BHP? Standard clutch?

GPS is accurate to within about 10 metres and all it's doing it measuring time over distance, it's far more accurate than your speedo which will be about 8-10% out.

You can still be done for almost every motoring offence on private property eg. dangerous driving for hooning around Tesco's car park. They brought this in quite some time ago. If you were caught on a 'private' road, and the only long straight road you could get up to that sort of speed I can think of around South Queensferry would be by the shore on the Hopetoun Estate, you'd still get done for an indicated 140mph, especially if you were there without permission.

You only get to go fast at Track Days under very tight regulations. It's very common to see idiots getting black-flagged for poor standards of driving.

We should arrange a meet at this 'Private Road'.

Sounds like it could be lots of fun. We can do donuts, handbrake turns and then go Kroozin' at a steady 140.

or even 145..........

Whilst not condoning speeding in the slightest, the car is designed to do upwards of this speed and lets face it 140 on the speedo will be closer to 128, neither you nor I know what private road we are talking about, could be a three lane wide straight and empty one in dry and clear conditions. BUT my main issue is why is it stupid and dangerous to travel down such a road in such a manner in this country but if it where on the German autobahn no one would bat an eyelid. Does everyone miraculously become more observant and cars safer????????? or is it just the law that makes it dangerous and stupid. Speed is not dangerous, inapropriate speed is.

Because in this country (and some examples of the M40 and M25 today) you will get people following lorries at 50-56mph and will just pull out and if already in lane 2 pulling into lane three with no intentions of speeding up to 70 and 'IF' doing op speed (sat nav or speedo) not accounting the differences in what speedo shows/ what you really doing thats still 80mph difference and iirc about 10 football pitches stopping distance. The general public in general need to be taught and educated first to drive properly on the motorway, get to the speed limit, learn properly how to judge speed, lane discipline (not sitting in outside lane at 65-75 when lane 1 and 2 are empty), panic braking from following too close etc.

Whilst being told after passing my IAM that i would be expected to do 80mph on the motorway (yes was told this) only when "conditions were right" i.e. not wet and not in rush hour. Yes i beleive we could go the same way as Germany, but i think firstly more driver education is needed. However if other drivers were trained to cope with fast speeds it would be safe and appropriate in good conditions.
