140mph then sputter :P

Featured Replies

Just thought i would let you guys know what happened last night and see if its normal. Well i know 140mph isn't normal, but im sure a few of you have done it on track days, or private roads.

Was coming home from a car meet last night with a few mates, when we stumbled apon a private road, so decided to see what the cars could do.

When the furby hit 140ish (between 4000 and the red line) it had a wee hickup then lost all power, so i pulled over and popped the bonnet. I kept the engine running and rev'd it a few times, and i noticed that the dump valve wasn't working, and i couldn't hear the turbo, **** i thought, how much is a new turbo, lol.

So quickly turned off the engine and tryed it again, started no problem on first turn, and the turbo whistled into life.

So carried on home, no problems, and been to work today, with no problems.

So what i wan't to know is, did the engine go into safe mode to protect the turbo?

I should also mention that its chipped to around 180brake.

Anwhoo, looking forward to seeing what you all think. :P

i wish my furby would even get close to 140mph!

It will be an overboost fault. Nothing really to worry about, its a quirk on remapped cars.

My guess would be 'safe mode', like what happened to Clarkson in the diesel

Jaguar when he was trying to do 10 mins around 'the ring'.

+1 I know my fabia never got these figures.

Its amazing what it will do with a nice long straight piece of road. Maybe the wind was behind me as well. :P Ive only done it the once, never been over 120-130 before.

Definitely overboost shut down to protect itself.. Personally I wouldn't attempt those speeds at anything other than a proper track event, where there are safety crews. Don't want a repeat of the Wales incident.

The wales incident?

The wales incident?

Three army lads killed in a Skoda when it decided to go flying 40 yards, and then through two walls.

Safe mode for sure, and there is no dump valve..

with the policemen that wrote a cop car off from driving at 140mph in severe rain

Thats just silly. . .

happened tho on the m4 i think

It's your car's way of telling you 'stop being such a c*ck, and slow down before you kill someone'

If you 'stumbled' upon this private road, i am guessing it wasn't THAT 'private'?

You won't impress many here with stories containing such levels of stupidity.

Whilst not condoning speeding in the slightest, the car is designed to do upwards of this speed and lets face it 140 on the speedo will be closer to 128, neither you nor I know what private road we are talking about, could be a three lane wide straight and empty one in dry and clear conditions. BUT my main issue is why is it stupid and dangerous to travel down such a road in such a manner in this country but if it where on the German autobahn no one would bat an eyelid. Does everyone miraculously become more observant and cars safer????????? or is it just the law that makes it dangerous and stupid. Speed is not dangerous, inapropriate speed is.

Even at 128mph, thats still at least 58mph over the prescribed limit. With the uneven geography of most parts of the UK (compared with a very flat Germany), i would say that on the balance of probabilities it was 'inappropriate'.

Speed limits are there for a reason. In Germany, there are obviously roads that are long and straight enough to allow discretion to the motorist. Also it must not be assumed that the lack of speed limit is not an invitation to drive as you please.

We are a much smaller country as well, so the level of traffic on our motorways is far more dense, making an unlimited speed limit a waste of time and very dangerous.

Hear hear Mr Posty...

I totally agree with POSTMANPATS post. Also people in Germany are used to driving at (higher speeds) than in the UK and tend NOT to winge about people going fast but idiots that HOG the second and third lanes of the motorways when the first lane is free to trot along at 60mph really does **** them off and Im one of those people.

Driving FAST = Higher risks (Minimised if driving alert and aware of the hazards)

Driving WITHOUT due care and attention = Hazards to other road users

Cobblers, the guy says 'private road' so no speed limit, are you doubting him??? Autobahns have as many and just as tight sweeping bends in them as the M-way in the UK, AND much of the deristricted roads are also only 2 lanes, not 3. And as for flat, some areas maybe but not the entire country  AND how is xxx mph safer on the flat to travelling up a gradient??? MUST admit though the state of the roads in this country is carp, despite the fact we pay the most to use them.AND as I mentioned you have no idea if there was traffic about on the OPs' private road  AND when did I advocate no speed limits in this country???

That's a f**king stupid thing to do as a diesel doesn't need one and fitting one will degrade your performance and cause all sorts of issues if it actually functions at all.

The VNT turbo already adjusts itself so there isn't a problem with providing too much boost and also a diesel runs on excess air anyway, so again you don't need to dump the air.

The point still remains - 140mph (indicated or not), is not appropriate.

It's the law and if caught you WILL get banned. If you cause a fatality in an accident you WILL go to prison.

Whether the road was private or not (probably not), at that speed you are not demonstrating a duty of care to your passengers or other road users.

Not arguing the consequences of speeding in this country, just asking the question, other than the law, why is the speed stupid or inappropriate, and why does that change by travelling east by a couple of hundred miles, and as the law does not apply if the guy was on a private road then the sole question is..........

You will find that in Germany, whilst there are 'some' parts of motorway with no limit, the Police will still take a dim view of 'excessive' speeding, especially if it results in an accident.

If it results in an accident they will take a dim view anywhere if the speed can be shown to be in excess of 130kph, but that is not the point is it?
