Featured Replies

Having just changed ISP I have lost my Static IP.

I know there are software soloutions to deal with Dynamic IP's - Has anyone got any experiance or advice please?

That was one I had searched out with Google.

I want access to my NAS from the outside world.

Try logmein Hamachi whilst your having a nose around mate, I use that as part of my pro subscription and as simbo says, dyndns is worth a look, my zyxel supports it so I have that setup for access as well.

The router does seem to have quite comprehensive support -

Vigor Router FAQ - DDNS

There's the answer then mate :)

I can confirm the Vigor routers work very well with dyndns.org (and various others) - I used dyndns for years on my cable line (which is virtually static but can change).

If you get stuck gimme a nudge on MSN, I've got a Vigor router powered up at home for the ADSL line at the moment :) (at office now though)

I have a dynamic IP address that Virgin provides. Although it stays pretty much the same, I took no chances and registered for an account with DynDNS. My router (Netgear thingy supplied by Virgin) supports IP updates to the DynDNS service, so that takes care of things when (if) the IP changes. As I normally connect to my home network using one of my own domain names, I set up a CNAME record in my XNAME (which provides free DNS services) account to point to the DynDNS account.

This makes sure that I can always access my home using my own domain name.

Thanks Q, that makes perfect sense!!!

Do you think you could try explaining that to a 3 year old and perhaps I might get the idea. :P

I have got as far as registering with DynDNS and I was about to setup using one of their hostnames however all of the easy to remember ones appear to have been taken - as you would expect.

So would a new domain name be the answer? Obviously I have two already but they are in use and point to the webservers so I assume I'd need a new one.

Just make somethin up stu... i use dyndns with my draytek.. got a domain in the is-a-geek.net :D

I keep meaning to get my fully fledged domain routed to it (bought from 123reg) but ive not figured that bit out yet

Hi Stu - it depends a little on what you are after. If you just want to host say a web page, you can either set up a subdomain on yours which frames or redirects through to dyndns.org, or alternatively some hosts allow you to use the dyndns.org name servers for a subdomain.

I used to just frame it through to the name like 'whateveritiscalled.dyndns.org' would be framed by 'wieboshomepc.mirror-web.co.uk' - it would resolve through to my dyndns addie that way.

There are a fair few options. If you have ability to create subdomains on your fabia-vrs.com and/or octavia-vrs.com sites, that would do the job :)

Thanks Weibo, I'm not really looking to use it to share or host stuff for the great unwashed it's really just so that I have access to some stuff while I'm out of the country.

I do have a facility for sub domains so i can see that as an option but is it over complicationg it or will it be better for the future?

seemed to be quite painless then - I have an account, created a hostname and it gave me an IP address.

Plugged all that into my router and it seems I can now see my NAS via a browser :D

Do I have to do anything else? I'm assuming (hoping) that if I reboot the router and BT give me another IP it automatically updates DynDNS?

Stu, it is not that complicated (what I said). The only thing is that you have to have control over your DNS records (in order to add the CNAME record). If you haven't then I would just stick to what you've got now, and learn the DynDNS name ;)

Thanks all - I think, with the excellent Briskoda knowledge base, I have a working solution.

Oh & thanks for the 'Thanks' too x 2 - no one has ever thanked me before :D

Have another, just for good measure eh.

I shall try the reboot now and fingers crossed all will be well.

Do I get another thanks?

Don't get greedy

The DNS flush didn't work so I rebooted and all went well.

wiebo do you know the vigor routers inside out? might need you to see what else i can do with mine ;)

I haven't configured one for a little while but their web UI is very easy to use, I've never had the router crash on me unlike some el-cheap-o-nasty ones that can't handle VPN traffic too well :)
