Xavier,

My 135-400 zoom came in at about

That's what I thought.

The sony dsc-f828 is really really quick - just like the proper SLRs. But I know what you mean. My old olympus' date=' even when focussed did take 1/2 a second to actually take the picture. Anticipation was the name of the game :([/quote']

No digital camera will match the speed of a real camera with fast film. I use digital cameras in work for microscopy and this is a real problem. To make the digital image sensor more sensitive to allow short exposure times, the cameras are refrigerated. If you are wanting to take good photos of fast moving objects, like cars, sports action etc, forget a digital SLR, get a normal one.

True William, but then again, the digiSLRs will still take full res (6MP) pics at 3fps which isn't too bad.

If you want something like 15-30fps, some cameras offer it at a lower resolution, providing you with a 6MP picture mosaic of 9 or 12 sub pics, all spaced out by fractions of a second

This is getting painfully fustrating.

I can pick up the Sony DCS-F828 for just a tad over

I used conventional SLR's for many years, and the weight around my neck has left me with problems ever since  , so I stick to my trusty Nikon 990 nowadays.

On the other hand, our MD has just brought a Canon 20D, which is awesome. A considerable step up from the 10D, which he had before. Luckily, someone else in the office has brought his 10D while I was away for a very good price, or I might have been tempted!

Could be tempted to sell my 300D 18-55 (kit), 28-200(sigma 5.6)

Nothing wrong with the 300D, love it to bits for it's weight, and ease of use...but I could be tempted to part with it :D

D70 is nice aswell...either or.

The compact or all in one's are good, getting better by the month. Depends what you want it for...there is alot of bagage with a SLR...you can get better shots with it, although as the others have said gear is only 1% of the equation.

I could cope with a point and click quite easily, but I take on the trauma of an slr setup, like forgetting it's on manual and clicking away...:(

Was going to say look at my gallery site, but it's broken...

Some shots from last week on the 300D and 18-55 lens...mostly in AP or TV.

Colin, if you're looking at the 20D ;) there's a waiting list at just about every dealer i know of..

Think i'll wait until after xmas, when it should be <

I would like a 300D to, but when you see the kind of pics my cousin was taking with his 3.2MP cheapish fuji camera last weekend I was pretty impressed. Especially because it was the 1st time he had taken pics of cars moving at speed.

Well, went around the local shops in Basingstoke.

Had a look at the 300D. They did have a very good (or at least I thought it was) deal. 300D body + 18-55 + 75-300 or so genuine canon lens + 256mb card + case for

Xavier,

I got my 135-400 for

Decent stuff at second hand = near enough new prices IMHO, specially premium Nikon / Canon stuff. Import could be an option if you weigh up the "risks".

Don't get stuck on big numbers when it comes to lenses. With the 300D, there's a 1.6 crop factor to apply, due to the size of the image sensor on the camera, which effectively makes a 300mm lens a 480mm lens. I assume the D70 has a similar crop factor.

If you remember my shots from Anglesey (Jon's car with the sea behind etc) they were all done with a "cheap" Canon 75-300 f4-5.6 (
