Petrol vs Diesel (The war) :)

Featured Replies

That's the thing about diesels, the right car can save you money, but you need to be doing mental miles to break even on new.

And who thinks "right, I want a fast, fun car... I'll buy a tractor!" :D

Agreed ...... I am considering moving on from t't vRoomster because of all the work I am doing in Germany and having just landed a deal with the US Army for work in Afghanistan and Iraq over the next couple of years, my annual mileage is dropping from 30 ish k per year to around 8k.

The diesel now no longer really makes sense, whereas before .... it was perfect as a solution.

That's very strange, my old Octavia vRS would do 40mpg on a run, and the TSI is supposedly more efficient than the 20vT

that's what I was thinking, my brother's Octy would average better mpg than my Focus on a decent run. I've also seen quite low (mid to low teens) sustained instant mpg figures in the diesel, so I've come to the conclusion that all this 30+mpg even when booting it talk is either bs or they drive like a granny/i drive like a **** :o

On a run in the right gear when not exactly hanging about, you should not really be able to get below 30mpg unless you are so in the wrong gear revving the nuts of it. I used to 'cruise' to work with an average speed of around 70mph which includes some stretches where 30mph was done ;)

And even then, 28mpg was the lowest I got on the 50ish miles to work.

There is zero chance of hitting anything 40+ mpg if you're booting it properly IMHO on the Fabia vRS, not a hope in hell.

Lowest average I've managed to get on my commute to and from work when making progress is 35mpg in my TDCi. :o

must try harder :D

what sort of RPM would be considered revving the nuts off it?

Well, I average high 40s or low 50s (depending on time of year), but can get down into the teens on full throttle at 2_000 to 3_000 rpm. I don't spend very long there, because, by the miracle of having engine torque, I'm back up to speed, and closing the throttle in a few seconds, with the cruising consumption being more like high 50s (on the computer).

Ah yes because a turbo'd petrol engine doesn't produce any torque at all..

If they made torque, they'd not have to be so stupidly short-geared.

yeah, just not quite as much and for 2 to 3 times as long

:)

Not always.. my turbo'd petrol had 300lb/ft (236lb/ft standard) between 2000-3000 rpm... :D

Either way it's lots more than a PD110 and much smoother to drive around town or out on the open road. :)

For me the old lb/ft and derv debate went out of the window when I had my first Octy VRS TFSI... the only advantages to a TDI then became road tax and mpg

Having had a ride ina mate's 1.8T Octy, there's a good amount of torque, and it's there for a wide spread, but using the performance drops MPG below 30, but making similar progress in a TDI could see you well over 40 IME.

It was my second experience of the 1.8T (I test drove an A3 before buying a 110 TDI), and yes, the 1.8T is a nice engine, and I'll bet the 2.0TSI is too, but unless you're light footed, the MPG falls off quite quickly.

Performance cost ££ always has always will.

You don't buy a hot hatch for economical driving now do you? You don't have to be light footed all the time either, just plan ahead and carry as much momentum as possible for as long as possible. :)

My drive to work in the mornings is 6 miles, all at low speeds, certainly not getting over 40mph, and driven gently.

My fabia VRS returns 45mpg doing only this journey

My Saxo VTR 8 valve returns 40mpg doing the same journey

Different on a longer trip, Fab gets up to 63mpg sitting at 60mph

Drive into a wall at 40 in the saxo, the wall will still be standing and the saxo will be demolished. They are a very old design and weigh nothing.

The Fabia is a big heavy car (The handling proves this), but some of that is down to extra safety features such as the airbags, crash bars, stronger body and a shell that isn't made from cooking foil ;)

1315kg seems a lot for a Fabia, does anyone know if thats correct? Came from Glass's car checkbook

Yup! it's made out of lead and iron... :D

And dark matter...

that's not a fair comparison though; the PD110 doesn't really make much in the way of torque

In some ways I actually preferred a Fabia II 1.2 petrol over the vrs purely because revving it to the red line was so much fun :D

It's about as fare as comparing a n/a petrol to a turbo diesel... :D

Which seems to class as a fare comparison...

Revving nuts of it in the case of the vRS with hybrid, I would say spend most of the time at 3.5k+ and rev up to 4.8kish in every gear (NSL permitting ;))

However due to an issue found with the flywheel I had to alter my driving to make it a bit kinder on that side of things. For an unmapped vRS anything over 4k is revving the nuts of it as it just doesnt do much and wastes loads and loads of fuel in comparison to changing up.

I've not driven your Ibiza, but as it has been mapped and has the bigger stock turbo, I'd imagine the fuel economy suffers when you go much over 4,3k or thereabouts.

I always use the instant fuel economy display to work out the best economy when I'm in that kind of mood, as it varies based on temperature, fuel, load, wind and whatever else

When blatting it round the backroads it is not really worthwhile checking that the road takes up the attention much more ;)

Oh no! Not the heady heights of four thousand rpm!

scotty_sad.jpg

She won't take it, captain!

 - we're talking derv

Now having a V10 rev to 8k rpm, that sounds lurvely ;)

So, as delivered, there's no point in revving higher than a TDi, and you've got shorter gearing?
