Internet Explorer V8 now released

Featured Replies

IE8 has now been released by Microsoft and is available to download.

Internet Explorer 8: Worldwide sites

This is the full version, not a Beta or RC version.

Can't be any worse than IE7....

No problems to report since I installed it, its actually seems to be using less resources than firefox.

Any issues with web pages serving the wrong IE code yet?

I'm bumbling along on Firefox 3.1 b3 - seems to be less of hog than before. Less memory leaks than before

I have had it on for about 30 hrs now, few issues with pages not loading and PC slows right down every now & then, keeping an open mind on it at the moment.

It may use less resources than FF, but we all know it will end up being complete pants and still conforms to no web standards known to man! Meaning web designers STILL have to worry about compatibility with internet explorer.

I believe M$ are publishing a list of 'compatible' websites that work with IE8.. that alone is completely shocking!

It seems to have a compaitibilty mode, where sites that dont work properly can be added and work fine.

For example, our office remote access solution does not seem to work completely until I added it to the compatibility mode list and now it works perfectly. In previous RCs access to the office through IE8 was not possible, at least now it works. Briskoda comes up as fully compatible.

Viewing this thread, firefox 3.0.7 takes more than 56MB of ram, whilst IE8 is using 40MB. On a poweful machine thats now problem, but on older machines it could make all the difference.

Why should it need a compatibility mode? If Microsoft just followed the same standards as everyone else, everything would work!

but now IE does follow web-standards... everyone is whinging!

I think its to make sites compatible with previous versions of IE, IE8 is now more standards compliant than earlier versions.

yep, apparently so. Maybe they should of called it something different, or at least used a different user agent string so that the additional code sent to < IE7 is not sent to IE8.

Might upgrade in a bit....

Had it on 2 days now - seems faster and no glitches whatsoever

(Though I am using default Avant Browser which 'sits atop' IE.)

And heres me about to fall off my chair from thinking you were going to say something good about a M$ product as i read the first line!

Behave :P

Avant (as you know ) uses IE as its core - so the IE8 must be OK as I've done my usual :o extended web activity for the last 2 days - and, yup, no problems whatsoever.

Sides, my slagging off was reserved for Vista :P (and rightly so according to the more discerning users :D).

I have had it on for about 30 hrs now, few issues with pages not loading and PC slows right down every now & then, keeping an open mind on it at the moment.

Tried it and got fed up of waiting for pages to load, so binned it this afternoon

Downloaded IE7Pro at the same time, which TBH has most of the things i liked about IE8 anyway.

I will probably try it again when i get my new Vista laptop in a couple of weeks (apparently IE8 has a few compatibility issues on XP)

I haven't even installed IE7 yet...

You are a web designers' worst enemy.

You are a web designers' worst enemy.

 How so?

I assume you're still using internet explorer 6.

Internet explorer 6 does not adhere to a lot of the web standards laid out by groups such as the w3c, who draft the 'specifications' for the mark up language(s) in which web pages are written.

Because Internet Explorer 6 deals with certain 'rules' laid out by designers and developers differently, designers must test web pages in Internet Explorer seperately to other browsers such as Firefox and Safari (which generally render web pages identically) and then come up with long-winded workarounds to fix any problems that do but shouldn't occur.

The solution to this problem which would inevitably mean that:

- Web sites could become cheaper to purchase

- Technology and design could move forward more quickly

Is for people who are currently using IE 6 (which is almost 10 years old now!) to upgrade to a newer and slightly more standards compliant Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8. Better still you could upgrade to Mozilla Firefox ;)

Now you know what they say about assumption...:D

You're using a mac, aren't you? :D

google chrome for me!

I have been known to.. :)

Now there was a reason M$ stopped developing IE for OSX but I can't quite remember what it was..

Just installed it, is a lot faster than FF3!

I now need to find a spell-checker...
