TT, S3, LCR, R32 Steering rack (quick rack) - fitting guide - Octy VRS MK1

Featured Replies

One of my arms (offside) was gone, when I fitted mine.

Geniune arm fitted in november .............FAIL

And to add insult too injury........I think the near side one has gone in the last few days as theres a noise from that area.

Might be of help too you

Thanks for the reply

I had the original arms swopped over, they were fine on my original rack so I can see one of them failing within an hour of the S3 rack being fitted.

Do you think there could be a problem with the rack itself?

Thanks,

Neil.

Neil, sorry to hear about the problems your having.

As you have checked all the bolts and mountings it does sound like a problem with the rack :( Was the connection between the steering column and the rack done back up?

Kind Regards

Garry

Yes it was connected alright and rechecked yesterday. Does sound like the noise is coming from the rack alright :( going to have to get another S3 rack now or put the original back in.

Thanks Garry.

Hi Garry

please can you give me the ETKA part number of the steering rack you've mounted on??

Please try to because I'd like to clear something. I have cracked ETKA on my laptop that opens all audis, seats, VWs and Skodas-rare to find.

And right now I have finished searching for part numbers and only Golf either LHD as my car or RHD has steering rack that says

"for steering gear with mobility aid" remarks PR-1N5

part number

LHD

1J1 422 062 H or HX

RHD

1J2 422 062

or

1J2 422 070 X

YOURS SHOULD BE ONE FROM TWO UNDER RDH.

No Audi TT, S3 or LCR has that mobility aid.

I am not sure what that means but it can be quicker rack. Can you help with that???????????????

There is also link where

WANTED S3 TT LCR R32 (mk4) Steering rack - R32OC | VW Golf R32 Owners Club

slapblader under first post says the same that R32 is the quickest.

In ETKA there is no note for R32 but mobility aid.

Please CHECK for R32 numbers if you can to be sure about it and to help others by choosing right gear.

And now one LITTLE help regarding OCTY tie rods and tie rods ends upgrade. I did it so I am speaking from the first hand.

RACE DRIVERS FROM OCTAVIA CUP REVEALS ME THAT SECRET.

Audi TT spindles have lower connection points for wishbones(lower control arms) and that is why their contrl arms by lowered cars remaqin horisontal -most important for roll geometry nad by lowered RS raised at the ends and that affects car geometry very badly. That's because TT comes out from the factory already lowered more than RS.

I have at first upgraded my tie rods and tie rod ends for TT ones!!! Used this part number and they are for sport suspension and 18 wheels remarks in ETKA PR G98 and PR G97 and quatro.

They have 16mm threads instead of 14mm regural ones.

Tie rods part nr

8N0 422 803 D and 8N0 422 804 D.

But there is a problem as many stated this on this post. Audi TT ones does mount on spindles from BELOW and OCTY ones from ABOVE!!!!

How to solve that???

Very simply_YOU JUST HAVE TO CHANGE TIE RODS ENS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND VICE VERSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is exactly what I have done on my car without any problem using 16mm tier rods and ends.. So guys take bigger ones form TT and put them on. They are done from factory for 18inches and sport suspension( not only tier dos but wheel hubs and carrier bearings are made stronger to support quatro, sport suspension or 18inches wheels). SO YOU ALSO NEED TO UPGRADE TO TT SPINDLES AND WHEEL BEARINGS

Here are part nr directly from ETKA

Wheel bearing housing

8N0 407 255 E left

8N0 407 256 B right one

Wheel bearing with mounting parts for quatro, 18inches wheels and sport suspension

8L0 498 625

But this is to expensive and here is what I have found and put on my car

1. H2S1J0407001KA - H2Sport - Sport Spindle, Stage 1, Mk4 Golf/Jetta 1.8T 6-Speed 02A

H2Sport - Sport Spindle, Stage 1, Mk4 Golf/Jetta 1.8T 6-Speed | Premier VW/Audi/Porsche Tuning Shop

and

2. H2S407001K - H2Sport - Sport Spindle, Stage 1, Mk4 Golf/Jetta 1.8T/VR6

5 speed 02J - the one on my car!!!!!!!!!Must have for all!!!

H2Sport - Sport Spindle, Stage 1, Mk4 Golf/Jetta 1.8T/VR6 | Premier VW/Audi/Porsche Tuning ShopLook also for his camber caster kits and control arms with pillow balls.

Hope this helped with TT,S3,LCR and R32 tie rods and tie rods ends??

Know a lot more regarding camber caster kits and track tested them-if any interested [email protected] is my email or here also

Morning Davojuri,

I am sorry i do not know the ETKA part number of the rack i fitted.

All i can say for sure is that it came off a MK4 Golf R32 that my friend was breaking.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Mine went on yesterday, it feels the same or similar dead ahead but as you turn it more it feels more and more precise.

Overall I like it, I don't know how much difference it made on its own since I also put on an R32 steering rack and polybushes at the same time.

Feels good though.

Mine's been ok-ed by the insurance so hopefully will get it fitted in August or September

Whoop Whoop.

The more the merrier. lol

Garry

I want to get one fitted too but not till the ESP issue has been sorted.

the quicker rack feels exactly the same when dead straight yet reacts quicker when turning the wheel? how does that work then?

Not sure, I know some racks have an eccentric pinion to give that effect.

I think this is a by-product of the way the steering geometry changes as more lock is put on.

Alternatively it could be that dead ahead there is no more feedback from the wheels than the standard rack but as you put on the lock the steering weights up more quickly than the standard rack.

I am really enjoying it now as a get used to it.

I find that for a lot of corners I don't brake now, just dab them to weight up the front wheels and slice through the curve.

Definitely more fun.

hook line and sinker lol :rofl:

You know what I meant.

When you have minimum steering angle on i.e. on the motorway, there is no more tram lining, bump steering or any other twitchiness and bad behaviour.

As your steering angle increases the feedback from the wheel becomes improves.

Don't mock us people who can't detect sarcasm. It's not fair.

Can anyone confirm the part number for the rack?

I unwrapped mine last night (it's been sitting in the garage for three months!) and the part number on the body of the rack is 8N2 422 044 L and the heatshield is also on there, the part number for that is something similar (starts 8N2 422...) It came off of a 225bhp Audi TT.

Also the Haynes manual advises replacing the steering rack mounting bolts, the dogbone mount bolts and the bolt that holds the universal joint between the steering column and rack... did any of you replace these bolts?

Im not sure on the part number mate so cant help you there.

I can say that i did not change any of the bolts that you mention tho :)

Garry

I've been looking at all the various steering racks on VAG-Cat all morning and cannot find the part number thats on the rack I've got :(

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place... the part number I found is on the bulky part of the rack near where the fluid hoses go in and out. There was also a similar part number on the heatshield.

It's definately an audi part number though (starts 8N2)

I won't bother buying replacement bolts then. I'll get a steering rack bush and I was thinking I might as well do the dogbone bushes as well as the dogbone has to come off to get the rack on... all this is assuming I have the right rack here :mad:

Chicken

That first part of the part number (8N2 442)is in etka as rhd rack, maybe the number is revised for last three digits, so I reckon you'll be fine, I didn't replace any of the bolts tbh.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't though:O:O

I'll have another look at it tonight and see if there's any other part numbers on there.

I'll price the bolts up from Skoda, should'nt come to more than a tenner for 9 bolts I wouldn't have thought.

I think there about £20 iirc :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Ok I checked it last night and found another part number on the rack

1J2 422 105

It looks like this is the same part number as the racks fitted by Lex Dysia and Amateur Stuntman so I think I'm good to go
