Tyres rubbing

Featured Replies

Just had some H & R lowering springs put on the octavia vrs and the rear tyres are rubbing against the liner. I'm running 18" rs4 alloys with 225 18 40 toyo's which are just catching the liner. Has anyone else had this problem and if so does adapting the liner (I reckon on just trimming it around the affected area) work or do I have to swap back to the original springs.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS It also looks lower on the back than the front ?

Having looked at the car again I'm positive the rear end is lower down. I've also just had a blast on a few country lanes and I wasn't impressed with the bouncing and unsettled ride. Looks like I've got a job for Saturday :o

I dunno whether anyone on the forums has fitted H&R lowering springs on the vRS especially with the 18" combination. Not that it helps much I'm afraid....

my dads does this on standard suspention with 18" wheels on, when fully loaded, deffo the back end on his thats rubbing

Are they the correct springs for an RS?

If i recall correctly, there hasn't been a spring-only kit specifically for the RS...

IIRC ;), Jon was running RS6 alloys with 255/35 18 rears at Anglesey. Geoff's picture shows what it was like loaded up for a corner. No rubbing.

Therefore reckon it's the suspension being too low.

Nice pic that...

Just think what i could do with the new EOS 20D.... :rubchin:

Take some decent pictures? :P

Just found the box outside the following codes are on it (a bit damp so it's hard to read)

H & R SportfeXXXX

Skoda Octavia xxxxxxx typ 1U

Audi A3 xxxxxxx typ 8L

There is then a code of 29768-1

I do hope they are the right springs because if not I'm going to have to fall out with people who fitted them as they should have know better !!!!

Just found the warrenty it's all in (German think) but these are some of the things it says.

Typ 29 768 Achse1 Achse 2

Draht in mm 12.5 11

Steller Fahrzeug - typ Ausfuh-rungen EG-BE-Nr

Audi 8L Audi A3 bis 110kw e1*95/54*0042*

I don't speak German but I'm not thick and it seems like I've been sold a set of Audi A3 springs (surely the audi has a lighter rear end ?).

If someone can confirm that these are not suitable then I may name and shame where they came from - now that would cause a stir on this board ;)

The plot gets better just been on motorsport world web site and the code matches to an Audi A3 180bhp 96>

I'm getting angry !!!!!!!!

from past experience (not with the RS) i've found that springs alone are not a good option, ok they are cheaper but in the end they knacker the shocks and dont give as good a ride as the standard setup.

each to their own though.

i would also agree that unless the vRS shares the same rear shocks/springs as the A3 (which i doubt) you've been sold the wrong kit.

the car should not be sitting lower at the back either.

could you pm or mail me a pic of your RS with the rs4's on as well pls ?

Nigel

Please find pictures attached. I used Skoda boot badges for the inserts

When i had the 18's on mine they did no catch and mine is lower than that at the back. With my new 19's on it only catch's every so ofter on the plastic rear liners

That is how low mine was on 18's with no catching.

The thing is I'm not that happy about the ride either as it does roll less now but understeers a lot more it also doesn't feel as stable on bumpy roads. I f the springs are ment for an A3 does anyone know what the axle weights are on these compared to the octavia ?

I'm thinking of going down the KW1 route and fitting them myself then I know things will be done right !!

So what do you guys reckon change the springs back to stock and name and shame, or just put it down to experience and buy the proper kit. I'm getting a bit forked off with companies who think they know about our cars and actually don't. I'm self employed if I don't know about my job I don't get paid that brings it home to me !!!

I'm running KW3s and on my original set-up where the ride height was around 1 fingers width between tyre and wheel arch, I needed 2 new front arch liners after the Conedodgers handling day.

Holes in liner by arch and inner wing where tyre was rubbing on full lock (although this may be due to a combination of ride height a 225 tyres).

Raised height to 2 finger widths and no rubbing although I think there is still a little rub on the inner wing side of liner on full lock.

As an experiment trying running with the 17'' alloys...if you still have them....and see if that makes any difference.

Yeah, but his are rubbing at the rear Adrian. I had 1 fingers room at the rear, but, mine only rubbed when the boot was fully loaded.

Take some decent pictures? :P

See that word behind that controversial pic of an ex Tory Party Leader posted by the driver of a certain slow black Skoda?

That's you, that is !!! :D

As for A3 Springs...

I stand to be corrected, but doesn't this sound like a certain member's experience of being sold a suspension kit for a Golf and being told "that will do"?? ;)

Tell me more about the golf kit ?? ;)

weight distribution is different, like an extra 50 kg over/behind the rear axle. 4 sets of dampers later, under warranty, they got binned.

  • Author

I assume that the audi A3 is the same then as it hasn't as big a overhang on the rear as the octavia ??

You've also got me wondering if it's forked the rear shocks already as it bounces like a goodun on bumpy roads now ?

They may not be FUBAR, yet, but you are driving what is equivalent to an A3 with a full boot.

  • Author

KW1's it is then as I'm not to bothered about the adjusting things that you can do with the 2's & 3's and this would confuse me.

Also my boot is normally full of cr4p like paperwork and stuff so if the unladen weight is that of a full boot on an A3 then I would be well over this weight so the springs would be over compressed.

Yeah, but his are rubbing at the rear Adrian. I had 1 fingers room at the rear, but, mine only rubbed when the boot was fully loaded.

Whoops......me bad. :o
