Paint cracking...

Featured Replies

Just been outside to my Octy vRS...

On the top of the front bumper, in front of the nearside headlight, I've noticed that the paint is cracked :mad::mad:

The car is 3 years old and I'm not happy... Has anyone else had a similar problem? It wasn't there a couple of days ago, and from where the cracking is, it can't have been caused by an impact from another vehicle... It just looks as though the sun has "got to it", but that can't be right, because the weather has been anything but sunny...

The car is under warranty till next February, can I claim on it under the "paint warranty" (if there is one)???

If I can, then I'll get them to sort out the stone chips too, plus the two 3" scratches that mysteriously appeared a while ago, preventing any show'n'shine action...

I'm really annoyed...

paint warranties are a nightmare . . . normally only if it has happeded from underneath the paint . .

go to your dealer and report back here!

Right... Saturday morning it is then, nice trip to Alcester for what I'm sure will be a polite conversation :(

I have my fingers crossed... However, should I be prepared to fall back on asking for some "goodwill" towards the cost of a respray?

Obviously I'm hoping the warranty will come through, as I don't really need this sort of expense when I'm trying to save for an exhaust, re-map and number plate... Grrr

Yep bad luck. Paint is a hard issue to get a warrenty claim in. The only person I know to be sucessful with a paint claim actually claimed under the corrosion warrenty.....

Does this mean I need to be the victim of an accident with some acid??? :D

I have just queried some paint flaking on my spoiler. It has gone off to skoda for a verdict, I will report back when I know...

K, can I ask how old your car is and how long have you had it for?

Does this mean I need to be the victim of an accident with some acid??? :D

Are you trying to dissolve the whole, or part of the car then?

my car was registered dec 2001. I've had it since march 2002 (i think ... still looks like when i first got it... except the spoiler)

Just enough to claim on the paint warranty...

Methinks I took the word "corrosion" a little bit too literally... :D

Basically I'm an annoyed cheapskate who doesn't want to fork out for a re-sprayed front bumper... Mind you, who isn't? :)

I'll be very interested to see what happens with yours then... Fingers crossed for ya.

If I make it out of the office to a client's before saturday I'll post this week, otherwise I hope to have an answer Monday morning....

(Note to self - get home landline set up)

You will be lucky to claim corrosion on a plastic bumper, plus they will inspect the whole thing to check for similar problems. Seeing as its on the bumper, they will probably argue impact damage of some sort. Whilst I hope you are successful in your quest, I would be surprised if you eventually get them to pass it..just going on whats been said.

Thing is, it's on the top of the bumper, and there is no impact damage that I can see. Someone scrapped the nearside front bumper on the side about two or three months ago, but I can't see how it can take that long for the paint to crack... Or perhaps it might take that long, I honestly don't know...

Someone might have reversed into you. If their bumper was plastic also, and the right height to hit the rubbing strip, the impact site might have been invisible, even if it flexed the bumper enough to crack the paint. My money would be on that. Go and look very closely at the rubbing strip in front of the crack area.

PS bad luck for the crack, and good luck with the claim.

Yup good luck mate

An update...

Went to the dealer on Saturday, spoke to a couple of people there. The general opinion (and mine now, having listened to all, including ncarring  ) is that someone has taken a crafty pop at my beloved...

Someone has reversed into the front of the car, in a 4x4 or van... The bumper "took" the impact and popped back out, a compression I believe, which has caused the paint to crack. Also, I have been informed that it will get worse over the winter (for obvious weather related reasons).

The good news... The dealer have a reliable "smart" fixer bloke type thingy who, for a modest (

OMG. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME THING.

no visible rubbing/scrape marks at all. its like really large noticeable cracking just on the flat bit under the rear light cluster. i SWEAR it wasn't there a while ago.
