My VRS MOT failure "cat" possibly

Featured Replies

Ok, last year the Car just scrapped through on emissions.

This year no chance.

C0 should be 03%

mine was 1.66% second run 1.31%

On the failure ticket it states. Carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive.

Plus Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits.

I have a turbo back blueflame with cell 100 cat that could be the issue here(as read before)

The front O2 sensor changed 8 months ago the rear O2 sensor last month.

Any ideas??? Maf etc. or is the dreaded blueflame cat to blame.

I had a never ending problem with blueflame's 100cell cat as soon as they changed it mine pasted first time. I changed lambda sensors, MAF..etc and none of this made a slight bit of difference.

Hi Chris, yep remember your thread now. Did you get warranty support on your 100cell or bite the bullet with another one.

When the MOT was done, was the engine nice and hot and the climatronic turned off. My old mk1 with sports cat would only scrape through if taken for a blast before the MOT and ensuring the climatronic was off. Another thing to check is that the air filter is not all clogged with dust.

I drove it rapidly to the Garage and the MOT station did it more or less straight away. Yep aircon was off.

Air filter had a full clean last month (CAI)

As Blue Flame don't sell the 100cell "cat" anymore, it does seem these are the problem.

Never ever had a problem with the Blueflame 100 cell sports cat on my old Octy vRS, passed every MOT with flying colours, guess I was lucky?

Its one of the age old problems with performance exhausts that use a sports cat. I have the same dilemma here at work.

A 100CPSI cat will flow better and produce more power than a 200CPSI version. The downside is that it will struggle with MOTs as it gets older alot quicker than a 200CPSI version. I only use 200CPSI cats in my systems for this very reason. We can make a system with a 100CPSI version if requested but it will always be sold without a warranty.

Check to see what Blueflames warranty procedure is. Im sure Nigel will look after you, just call him, be polite and explain the problem.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Garry

I'm a little worried by my blueflame 100cel cat which continues to pass at 0.29 (limit 0.30). Does anyone know of anywhere that sells stainless 200cel cats at a resonable price which would be ready to weld in place of the old one?

I've seen a few from Ebay in the states but not sure on the quality and want to be prepared should it ever fail. This may help Bowders1 too.

Cheers Garry,

I spoke to Nigel this morning and Blue Flame still also produce the 100Cell at requests and they offer slightly better performance over the 200Cell. Also Nigel stated that the material used has been improved and that the ECU cell light is no longer a issue for the 100cell. Still a little cautious that for MOT's might be a problem.

I also had confirmed today by JKM (great folks) it is the Cat that is playing up, all other O2 sensors , MAF etc are ok.

As my Cat back exhaust is under 2 years old that is covered by Blue flame warranty, and I am checking the Cat purchase date(never find a receipt when you need it:mad:doh)

Nigel was very helpful and advised me that I could return the Cat for testing and or / replacement if found defective and still in warranty.

In the meantime I have purchased a new 200cell(prefer this over the 100Cell to be confident for MOT's) at a great price from Nigel to be made up, and when received and fitted will comment on MOT. I will then work out what to do with the 100Cell.

I can't stress how supportive Blueflame have been.
