Hi Everybody

Featured Replies

Hi all, I hope to join your ranks properly tomorrow as after many weeks trying to decide on a new car I've finally settled on a new Skoda Octavia 1.4 Elegance.

My current car is a VW Passat which I've had from new since 1998 so I'll be taking advantage of the scrappage scheme which although not as generous as the goverment would have us believe is probably just worth my while using it.

I've beeb deliberating for two or three weeks which model to buy and although I was for a while considering the L&K with the DSG box I decided I couldn't justify it as I only average about 6000-7000 miles a year and have gone for the 1.4TSI Elegance instead.

I fancied the DSG box but I've never had an automatic before and although it sounds worth having (especially as most of the time I'm driving in slow moving traffic) I have reservations on the long term reliability as I keep my cars for a long time, before I had the Passat I had an Audi 80 for 13 years. Hopefully the Turbo won't fail too soon.

I've read quite a few reviews of the Octavia and it always seems to do very well. I've had a test drive but only drove around a residential area and didn't get to take it out on faster roads but I'm sure it will be okay.

Anyway I intend to order it tomorrow but I don't know how long the delivery is at the moment (the dealer was asking for a deposit earlier this week or threatening September).

Welcome.

I'd recommend the DSG box, I've got one in my Golf, it's nothing like a conventional auto and the changes are so smooth and makes the car easy to drive.

Can't speak for long term reliability but I'm 99% sure I've read some Octavia have been used as Taxi's with DSG and they were fine.

Few other options I'd consider are the Maxidot display, Leather package for the steering wheel (gives multifunction wheel as well), Light Assist Package and possibly the parking sensors.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Apart from metallic paint (silver) the only other option I've decided on is the Maxi-dot with the sterring wheel controls.

I was nearly seduced by the L&K but it's quite built up around here and 90% of my driving is stop-start traffic 5-6 miles to work and back :( and it would be a waste (still I suppose there's always the other 10% ;)

To be honest there's not a lot wrong with my Passat and I'm still wondering why I'm changing it  Although the scrappage scheme is not as generous as it makes out (and the Government could have organised it better ) I don't think there'll be a better time to buy a new one.

If Skoda gave a longer guarantee on the DSG and it was a bit cheaper then maybe I'd be tempted. I suppose you do get ESP and hill start control with it though.
