Disc and pad time!

Featured Replies

Questions about a Octy1 Tdi (110) 2003.

Time has come for new disc and pads all round,What size's are the disc front and back?

Anyone recomend any company's that sell OEM quality disc and pads?

Cheers

You could check out Euro Car Parts for OEM quality brake items

Go to GSF if your near one.

I'm running Brembo fronts and Zimmerman rears, all bought from there.

Hi

May be worth checking , but I think the fronts are 288`s and the rears are 239`s

But check first

Sarah

Your car is the same as mine so brake sizes should be:

FS-III calipers

Front 280x22 mm vented

Rear 232x9 mm solid

Ahhh 280`s , blimey same as the 90BHP one?

I have spoken to Jorily's (site sdvertisers on here) and have been advised 288x25 is the correct size disc for the Octy 110!.

But need to find out if I have 1 or 5 retaining screws, which I can find out two ways either by finding the PR code on the data sticker which should be 1LE or 1ZE,But I can't find it anywhere. The nearest I can find is ELE.

Or finding out on the disc,Would that be a wheel off job?are they easy to find?

Sorry about all the q's but you can tell that I am really technically minded!

Cheers for any help!

I can't see any reason why a disc would need 5 retaining screws; they're only used to hold the discs on during production, and stop the discs rotating relative to the hubs when the wheels are removed during service/tyre changes and the like.

But anyway, take the wheel off, and count the screw head(s) remaining.

I'm sure they are 280 and not 288 and there is only one retaining screw. The 110 TDi has FS-III calipers which are different to those fitted on the VRS with the 288 discs. IIRC the 130 TDi has the 288 discs but I could be wrong.

Look here for a list of sizes and pictures.

I'm pretty sure you're right about the 130; certainly it's the only Octy 1 diesel you can upgrade to 312mm discs by changing the caliper brackets and nothing else.

GSF do sell them, they were £140ish for 4 discs and 4 sets of pads (eg everything all round) when I did it last.

As above they are 280mm FSIII not the 288mm ATE type on the front.

Yep, just take the wheel off. The fixing screw(s) will be between the wheelbolt holes.

Oh! perhaps the father in law has the 130 engine,Whats the engine code for the 130 and the 110?

This the reply from Jorily

Hi,

There are 2 types for your car:

288x25mm (1LE) 1 retainer screw

288x25mm (1ZE) 5 retainer screws.

Is the 130 engine a PD and paired with the six speed box as with the golf MK4?

The 130 is certainly a PD, and was paired with the 6-speed on the L&K. (slightly o/t but the PD130 is paired with the 5 speed in the Fabia vRS, so it's clearly possible.)

Ken, all Fabia vRSs are 6 speed. I'm not certain wether or not the 5 speed/PD130 combination exists.

Mk1 Superb

After a quick browse, I think I may see the problem; Your listing shows all Octys with 16" rims as running 288mm discs, but I can assure you the Elegance TDi110 has 16s and 280mm discs (and W rated tyres as standard  [as to why]). The pre-facelift SLX TDi110 had 15inch rims though.

Yes, TDI110 Elegance here, and 280mm discs on front. Single holding screw. Bigger brakes were only on the 130PD engines. and some petrol ones.

For better performance, try any decent normal discs (e.g. Febi 17936 at vwspares) and EBC Yellow pads. Expensive, but compensates for the relatively lousy brakes (TDI110 is heavy). I used to run Greens on both Octavia and Superb which were lots better than stock pads (no fade and stronger braking), but now that I tried the Yellows on the superb I can attest to their superiority over Greens.

I am aware there are a lot of other manufacturers of premium pad compounds, but on this car/engine/brakes combination, the brakes are inadequate, fade quickly and require large-ish force to stop rapidly. And it seems that most other manufacturers are very careful not to publish friction coeffcient, which is typically 0.3-0.35, and for EBC Greens / Yellows it is 0.55/0.6, respectively.

That translates to just over half the pressure on the braking pedal for the same braking effect as with stock pads.

Yes but the PD130 had a 288*25mm ATE set up and the TDI 110 hasd the 280mm FSIII set up.

On the EBC front, I run the Red Ceramics and find them to be doing very well.

Sorry for all the q's, but does the 110 Octy1 with the FSIII 280mm set up have the wear indicators for the pads?

1 wear indicator, on the LH inside pad. If you've got an Elegance with the stock 5-spokes, you can see the outer pads through the spokes anyway.

That plus the callipers have FS III cast into the outer face which you can see through the alloy.
