Dodgy laptop screen

Featured Replies

My daughter has managed to break yet another laptop:( As far as I can tell the thing works ok but the display is like a letter box with fuzzy coloured lines on the rest. If you tap various areas of the screen or keyboard it either gets a bit better or a lot worse. Its Compaq Presario (sorry can't remember the model no.). Any ideas anyone? New screen or loose wire?

Does the letter box bit show the whole of the image or just part of it? Sounds like it could be a poor connection. Try plugging in an external monitor to see if the image is OK on that. If so it will almost certainly be the wiring or the screen that's the problem.

Daughter recently cracked her ASUS Laptop screen.

£130 some places.

Managed to download a 'tutorial' video and sourced new one from eBay for £70 delivered and did it myself. Not too difficult either  12 screws, 2 connectors and removal of some sticky tape basically.

PDF tutorial here (can't find the video tutorial)

Just part of the image. This is the second one she has done the same thing to:eek:

It could be a weak point in the laptop if is the second one she has knackered, assuming they are the same model. Assuming the graphics card is OK the easiest thing to check is probably the wiring. On most laptops you can remove a strip along the top of the keyboard which will expose the screws holding down the keyboard, if you remove the keyboard you may well be able to see the wiring going up to the screen. There will probably be wires for the aerial for wireless as well, there could be a couple. You may also be able to see the connector on the motherboard, that could be damaged from excess pressure on the keyboard.

Have a look on the internet for service manuals for the laptop. Dell have their ones freely availble and I have found toshiba ones pretty easily before. they should tell you how to disassemble it so you can check for bad connections.

Dismantling the screen is sometimes a bit tricky as there are loads of catches around the edge of the lid and you have to make sure not to snap them.

Dropping it by chance?
