WiFi - need I say more??

Featured Replies

Is that what Colin will need to protect himself when Loz reads his comment about women trying to do technology?

I am confident that i am at no immediate risk... although she has been to my flat on a number of occasions now, i doubt she will be able to find it again without directions :D

sooooo. whats the latest?

i think you've just made Loz's head explode

Yup, bet I have

I wonder if Loz has carried out any of the suggestions, or has just keeled over from information overload and/or errant wireless radiation? :rubchin:

:P

Keeled over is my guess.

Loz is in A&E, having meds to keep her calm whilst her head's sown back together seems the consensus.

LOL, it's like a co-worker asking for help on the new kit we have, given and answer then the phone goes quite before "how far are you from ......" :rotz:

If the LED is Orange on the Wii, then it's still on and connected via wireless.

OK, is DHCP on the wireless USB adapter? If not, you need it on. If you, or someone's given it a fixed address, then this could be the issue that it's been allocated for wired, and wont give it to a wireless device.

Also, if you're having signal issues, change the routers channel. If there are a lot of routers near you all running the default channels, then it gets congested and the signals clash ;)

Try each channel until you find a stable one.

No, I turn Wii off properly.

I have no idea what DCHP is, but on my routers thing it says this under DCHP:

This table shows the assigned IP address, MAC address and time expired for each DHCP leased client.

IP Address MAC Address Time Expired(s)

192.168.0.101 00:50:8d:b3:9c:00 858993

And more DCHP stuff...theres a drop down which is set to 'server' and the DCHP client range is set to 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200

I don't know how to change the channel, what else could that be called? lol

ooh, I'm on channel 11, but can't find an option to change it. It just says:

This page shows the current status and some basic settings of the device.

System

Uptime 2day:1h:22m:31s

Firmware Version 1.61

Wireless Configuration

Mode AP

Band 2.4 GHz (B+G)

SSID Lozkins

Channel Number 11

Encryption WPA2

BSSID 00:0c:f6:21:1f:b9

*edit* found it and changed to 1.... will try again

Oi! I found it without directions last time!! And JP let me in so it's not like you're safe inside either!!! muahahahaaa!!

Interference from some other bit of kit it would seem then.

Pfft.. i shall be having words!

I've found over the years experiencing many different wireless access points and routers, that if you get the combination wrong they can be a right old pain in the ****.

Especially if you buy cheap wifi equipment particularly USB Adapters.

PCI adapters seem to have less compatibility problems and generally better written driver coding and hence great compability and reliability.

Belkin routers and USB adapters, I have never had one work correctly yet :thumbdwn:

I would recommend the following.

Buy a Linksys router (Cisco)

Buy a Linksys WRT54GS USB Wireless Adapter for your desktops (If you don't want to open the tower that is otherwise get a nice PCI Adapter from US Robotics, Linksys, Cisco, Buffalo as I've never experienced a problem with any of these makes)

Buy a laptop that has Intel Centrino Technology! Yes it's a marketing gimmick but the main component to get the stupid badge is a intel mini-pci wireless card and they are exceptionally reliable and have great range!

Another tip is to never use the wireless utility that comes with the card, ALWAYS USE WINDOWS ZERO WIRELESS! (The built in windows software) To do this either route around the setting for the current properitary wireless utility or make sure when it comes to installing the actually wireless card you do it manually, I.E using device manager and locating the proper .inf files on your CD or download folder for the network card.

My final tip for a sustainable, reliable and speedy wifi connection which should bring you years of pleasure is to only use WPA-PSK (TKIP) security Don't use WEP or WEP2 these generally cause compatibility problems and rather interestingly as I've seen to use WEP2 and other forms of authetication other than WPA-PSK you need a more powerful system :rotz: hence I think these actual forms of security use alot more system resources. If you want added security might I suggest using the MAC Address filter also or turning off the SSID broadcast of the router then only designated computers can connect to the network and it is extremely secure.

Hope my experiences in the IT industry have been helpful.

Ciao Guys.

Thanks for your input VagNewbie, but most of it I wont understand! As I pointed out, it is only my second pc hence why I bought a "cheap USB adapter". I do have a PCI one that was used when I had my main computer on wifi, but there isn't one in this old computer that I am talking about.

It seems to be working ok now, so thats good enough for me for now. :) I have my proper computer hardwired - can't go wrong lol....

Too true that  Old Skool ways can't beat them.
