ECU mapping ?

Featured Replies

do any of you guys know of any software i can download to remap my own car as i have the vagcom software and lead now

Don't do it. You will almost certainly kill your ecu.

i dont fancy spending stupid amounts for it you see so i wouldnt mind knowing if i could do it myself

I personally think if you do it yourself you will end up spending more money repairing your ECU & turbo than you would have done getting it done properly by a site sponsor such as p-torque, jabbasport etc.

Take it to people who know what they're doing and save your engine. ;)

this has fail written all over it! it isn't a case of just upping the boost and that! seriously just take it to a professional! at least if it goes wrong you have some sort of warrenty or guarantee or someone else whos accountable rather than just being up **** creek without a turbo!

well for a start im at the bottom of the uk there is no1 near me who does it as far as i know as i have been looking for sometime now

im right down in camborne in cornwall jabba is the otherside of the country for me i cant warrent traveling the distance for something like that

A safer bet would be a plug and play tuning box, I still think that even that would be safer than attempting a remap yourself?

You could probably get away with dropping a generic map into your car but by the time you buy the kit to do it (VAG-COM isn't the kit you need) and a licence you're better off paying someone.

There must be someone local - there are loads of places offering re-maps for diesels nowadays!

thats why i was asking if there is software i can download to upload already made maps to my ecu or possibly making a template from my original map and tweaking it a lil at a time

i had one of those for my old astra 1.9 cdti and it was complete ****** to be honest it did give it a lil more torque but it drank far more fuel

i would never buy one of those again

Don't do it yourself. And you haven't research much if you think no one does remaps in cornwall. Off the top of my head there's Celtic in Newquay and Richard Bros in Redruth.

*Grabs popcorn and awaits thread entitled "HELP TRIED TO REMAP MY CAR AND BLEW IT UP!!!?!?!?!"*

ive heard mix stories bout CT so gonna avoid them and as for richard bros my mate goes there with his astra n they do a pretty crap job

1. As I understand it, the Vauxhall CDTI engines are nowhere near as tunable as the VW PD units. That might just be because I only read the VW tuning forums, but that does seem to be the general concensus.

2. Of course, a plug and play box will never do as good a job as a proper custom or even generic remap, but I still think it would be a safer bet than plugging in some equipment that you will never have used before and flashing your ECU with a map that doesn't have any long term reviews or indeed other members on this very forum that use it.

3. More torque/power = more fuel, unfortunately you can't get more power without using more fuel.. those with remaps who say they're getting better fuel economy simply aren't actually using the extra power they've been "given"...

As far as I've read not a single person in this thread has thought that it is a good idea, we're just trying to save you time, money and hassle in the long run. Either be prepared to spend a fair amount of money on getting the job done properly, or leave your ECU well alone and enjoy the power you've already got, or alternatively, sell the car and buy a ready remapped one. As it happens "Mr Grumpy" has an insane car for sale at the moment - check it out in the for sale section!

We're not being deliberately awkward. I genuinely think that doing it yourself is a terrible idea. Please, give it loads more thought before you cost yourself a ridiculous amount of money.

as to regards selling it i dont think so as i have just lowered it put the tt brakes on it n rear anti roll bar as well as servicing it if i did i would want like 5k n theres no way id get that

You could always take those things off and replace with the original items, and then whack them on the new car.. ;) but I take your point. I'm in a similar position at the moment - had I not leather retrimmed and fitted other stuff to the fabia I'd have sold and bought something nicer this year.. :D

even if i did that theres the cost of having it all removed and originals fitted it just aint worth it in any respect

From Ross-Tech's FAQs:

1.12 Can I use VAG-COM to "Flash" the chip in my ECU?

No, we have investigated flashing, but found that there are several different methods of encryption for various VW/Audi vehicles, as well as delicate licensing issues to overcome. Therefore, we do not intend to pursue flashing any further at this time. You cannot alter boost, timing, fueling, rev limiter, or speed limiter with VAG-COM. You should contact a chiptuner if you wish to have those parameters altered.

i never said using that software did i ?

im looking for software to do it with

ive heard mix stories bout CT so gonna avoid them and as for richard bros my mate goes there with his astra n they do a pretty crap job

Right, but what would you say if I now told you my mate could do it, he just downloaded some software from the net, bought a cable from eBay and is pretty sure he's got a map for your car.. He's not actually done it before.. and never seen the map used, but if he's sure then it can't possibly go wrong. I mean, how many variables can there be on a car produced for 5 years?

You may have heard bad things about those tuners.. but they're still in buisiness! If they really made a mess of everycar they worked on they would no longer be around.

I really think this is a bad idea! It would be awesome if you could come back and post a thread "Oh Wow.. I remapped my own car for £50 and it's amazing"... but I'm afraid that just like everyone else.. I just don't see that happening!

ive heard mix stories bout CT so gonna avoid them and as for richard bros my mate goes there with his astra n they do a pretty crap job

I've only ever heard horror stories of anyone doing it themself. Feel free to do it, but don't come on here looking for sympathy after. :rotz:

i would have to find the software first anyway but i wouldnt take my car somewhere to have something done if i aint comfortable with the place thats why i went out n learned how to change the suspension on my car myself n even go and track it myself i didnt feel comfortable with places around here so i learnt the skills myself

as the saying goes you want something done properly do it yourself

Scooter - if you do it yourself, and you break your ecu, you are going to be

(a) - without a car

(B) - stuck in Cornwall without a car and no one nearby to help you fix it

© - looking at somewhere between £300 and £900 for a replacement ecu (2nd hand or new)

(d) - hearing "I told you so" at least 100 times from people on here

Good luck if you decide to try it,

Is this thread for real? You need some hardware (not software) to flash the ECU in your car, and that comes at a (high) price. I've spent thousands of pounds on hardware and I could easily spend thousands more!

For what it's worth if you can live without the car for a couple of days then the ECU in your car (guessing you have a Fabia vRS) can be bench flashed so one of the pro tuners can do it for you without actually having the car, and if you have VCDS then you could do some before and after logging to make sure everything's running OK.
