Break or sell?

Featured Replies

Hey there guys.

With the possible impending purchase of a new car I am stuck at a dilema.

Do I sell the car as a whole or do I break the car up a bit and sell it for bits (interior etc)?

If I get the new car I will be shopping the tax in and SORN'ing it if it doesn't go straight away which makes me think I may be better leaving it on the drive and flogging the bits off it but not sure how much I would get doing that. Having said that I don't know what I would get as a whole car.

Phil

Are you talking about Nelly????

What has happened to the car to make you think about breaking it up? Surely someone would want a L&K Felicia.

Nothing has really happened she's just got a few things here and there. They really don't wear their miles well don't felly's!

The things that spring to mind that re wrong with her are:

N/S/F wing painted in just metallic blue not the multi-flek green/purple/blue that the rest of the car is

Clutch is quite worn and right up at the top

Rev counter doesn't work

rust appearing on all wheel arches

some shifty looking rust on the bottom sills that looks like it's rusted through (that I have painted over with hammerite!)

Boot lid rusting quite badly now (cunningly hidden by a big 'GB' sticker :)

O/S/F Wing has a big rust spot that is now starting to bubble

Plenty of rubber bushes that are starting to crack and need replacing on various suspension bits etc

Gear selector shaft and oil seal need renewing (gearstick is a bit loose and gear oil leaking from underneath)

Fifth gear retaining nuts need doing I think

Rattling from underneath when setting off (not gear selector shaft as it still does it if you hold the stick)

Exhaust has developed a deep resonating sound when booting it (I have replaced the middle and back box sections and recently had the exhaust manifold off which was fine.... could it be the cat?! :()

On a plus note she still drives really well and is capable of catching a few folks unawares and I have had a fair few things done lately including front suspension struts, all new HT leads, air filter, spark plugs, oil and filter, fuel filter, decent tyres, plenty left on the brakes, 12months tax, 4 months MOT....

Oh I don't know...

If I'm really honest I can't even really afford a new car at the moment it was just a bargain that cropped up but maybe looking to sell anyway and save some money for a few months.

Damn 5 or 6 months ago I'd have snapped your hand off, but I've got a runaround now so have got nowhere to put the car, especially one that needs work.

I'd have thought even with the work required an L&K Felly would sell on here, I'm sure there are a few people who would buy her to restore her to her former glory.

I'd be tempted, just to transfer the L&K bits over to the charlie mobile

Will see about re-joining freedom and putting a proper ad up on here.

I wish whatcar had the L&K listed so I knew a bit more precisely what it was worth! lol

No L&K listed for Felicia with Glass's either Phil :(

How many were made roughly do you know? Sounds like not enough have been through the 2nd hand market, for a picture to build up about values.

As far as I know there were 100 estates and 100 hatchbacks but that could be totally wrong! lol

The receptionist at the local skoda garage expressed interest when I was last there! lol

Just though I would add that her interest was in the car!

would be really interested with the interior:thumbup:

While it's sad, I can see the best solution being to break Phil - and that's mainly a financial one. With the rarity of the model, and the interior - I can see you reaching a reasonable resolution :)

Steve

I don't think you should break it - someone on here would have it from you as its a special edition.

I actually disagree, whilst I accept the car needs work it is still a very rare model and I feel worth more in one piece than broken up. I can't help but feel that £1K would get that car back up to scratch and it has got to be worth more than that.

The only part of the car IMHO that is worth anything is the full leather interior, but how much would Seat Surgeons charge for a full leather conversion on a standard Felicia?

I paid £350 for my 1998 felly estate with less mileage. Only a collector may pay more than a 1K for phils.... (sorry phil)

  • Author

Nope totally agree with you there. I very much doubt I would get 1k for it!!!

I would have though £500 tops tbh!

Also agree above the on that the only real thing of value is the leather interior and the full set of 5 alloys perhaps but other than that there isn't anything that is really different to other fellys.

Phil

leccy windows ?

  • Author

Yeh... leccy heated mirrors too... thats all I can think of.

I don't know, considering how rare they are, and how well specced they are, I personally feel as though they have to be worth more than a standard Felly, I know it is slightly different but a Felly Fun will still make well over £1K. It would be a shame to break it though :(.

It is a shame to break a rare model but sometimes well...it happens.

They can be revived though, as with the A1 Peppercorn one was rebuilt.

As i said earlier i would be really interested in the interior. I don't know what they usually go for but say i start at £200 would that get you interested:)

Rattling could be the exhaust manifold heat shield? Leaking oil and loose gear stick isn't end of the world. If selling interior would sell it as one lot on ebay. hopefully bidding wars would ensue.

Right well it seems like I have made my decision after calling into the skoda garage in a whim and.....

I ordered a new gearshaft selector joint to cure the sloppy stick problem.

I think I will keep her a bit longer then seel as a whole... or if I am able to by that time I will keep her and do some restoration work myself.

We have been looking at buying a house and need to save any money I have for a deposit but once we're moved in and, hopefully, have a private drive and garage I will be able to keep nelly there and start stripping her down to repair/restore.

I really wouldn't want to see her go... just love her too much tbh.

Phil

Out of interest Phil, how much was the selecter joint ? As mine is like stirring a spoon in watery cement.

  • Author

Well... I suspect yours will be different to mine as they revised the design in '96.

Mine is like a little box with a rubber gaitor top and bottom and the joint is packed with grease inside. Cost is £22.

The later one is just a simple joint and Skoda list it as complete with the shaft although I'm pretty sure Jorily does a repair kit for it to replace the bushes.

Hope this helps.

Phil

Cheers Phil. I'm thinking of auctioning the Charlie mobile for the guide dogs to bump my sponsorship for the Great North Run.... but was going to get 1 or 2 little things fixed first.

A car like that isn't worth selling as a complete vehicle - no matter how rare it is , it's still just a rusty Felicia and that will never fetch more than a grand no matter how much you spend on it. The Fun was a totally different prospect entirely.

Either line up buyers for a few major components and break it , or do as you are doing and do the bare minimum of work to make it safe and ok to drive and use it as a cheap and comfortable runaround.
