Clutch smell

Featured Replies

My mum used my Fabia vRS last night as her car is in the garage.Today there is a stink of clutch coming thru the vents :( You cant smell it when the car is moving, just when its stopped and especially when you get out of the car. Theres no slippage of the clutch just the smell. The car is only 2 months old and has done 4k miles.

Should i just keep driving and hope its just the smell thats around from when she drove it, or do i get the clutch looked at ASAP to see if the clutch is faulty?

When I had a Manual Fabia I used to ride the clutch on the spirally thing that lead to multi-storey car parks, you know the kind. It allways used to burn and the smell just wafted around the car park, like dogs mess thrown on a barbeque, In my own experience they burn easy, Im sure 8v Fabia's dont have a massive great clutch considering their push bike performance, I wouldnt have it checked, it might go away, is it under warranty?

How do you recognise the smell of the clutch?

Yup its under warranty, the car is only a few months old. My mum drives a automatic Range Rover and isnt used to having a third pedal. Im off to london for a week now so my fabia will be unuse, hopefully the smell will have gone away by then. If it still smells ill get it looked at by the garage.

ITs just a nasty smell that you learn to associate with a clutch. HArd to explain what it smells like, its unique really.

Hmm. It could be useful to try. Is it burning or singeing? Is it oily? Is it acrid? Is it dry and dusty or wet and mouldy? Is it 'bitty' and chokey or more homogeneous - e.g. diesel fumes vs. petrol fumes.

The clutch smell is acrid I find, but that something only happens when the clutch has been heavily slipped or worked.

Will take a while but should go with no lasting effects.....

clutch smell... you'll know it if it you ever experience it... somewhat akin to the stench of a pig farm combined with burning flesh... not a particularly nice vision (but neither is the smell).

Because he's a car geek hehe

My mum drives a automatic Range Rover

1 + 1 = 2

And dont allways count on you clutch being covered under warranty, its a wear and tear item. Depends very much on how the dealer words the warranty claim.

Clutch smell is very similar to brake smell, if you ever manage to really cook them.

It's a sort of acrid, organic smell, it's not disimilar to the smell of roofing pitch.

give your car an damn good thrashing making sure you really have to work the clutch and box, stop, get out and have a good sniff! :D
