Price of oils at dealers

Featured Replies

I have just looked in detail at my 2nd years service bill for my octavia 1.8 turbo

4x4 and see that I have been charged

Dealers are all the same...they're there to make money...

Ask about their oil price in advance, if you think it's expensive then supply your own.

And make sure your screenwash bottle is full! :)

Rob.

That's pretty damn expensive! The oil used (especially if you are on variable servicing) is not cheap anywhere though...

How come they only used 1/2 litre? I'm confused. Was this a service or not? All services should include an oil change...

I usually make sure my washer bottle is topped up to the brim before taking it in for a service, so they have no excuse for charging me for screenwash.

well today i paid 21.98 +vat for synta gold fully synth(5ltr).bargain compared to you mate :(

The 1/2 litre was used because they changed the filter, the engine oil has never been changed since I purchased the car from new, it is filled with longlife oil, and as I do a low mileage, not yet 10.000mls they seem to feel, that an oil change is not necessary! however I know that oil left for two years certainly needs changing, I have purchased mobil 1 0w-30w vw 503.01, and a vw oil filter and intend changing the oil my self, incidently, 5ltrs 4ltrs, plus 1 litre in a snazy bag at halfords cost

Forgive me for seeming simple here, but was this bill for a 10k lube service, a 2nd years main service or variable service engine dictated. Or was it a precautionary oil/lube on your part?

VW 503.01 oil is the latest specification for the 1.8T engine, and is a step up from the VW 503.00 specification, and is recommended for the Audi engine as fitted in the Audi TT, which is more or less the same engine, type in VW 503.01 into your search engine, and see what that turns up, or try WWW. volkswagen environment. the service was a 2nd year service, as required to validate the guarantee.

VW 502.00

This oil can only be used in petrol engines and is recommended for those

which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines

with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other

specifications.

Viscosity ratings: SAE 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 503.00

This is a relatively new oil specification for petrol engines with variable

service intervals. It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, or the TT and

S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp.

Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 503.01

A new oil specification specifically for the RS4, and the TT and S3 with

outputs of more than 180bhp, Passat W8 and Phaeton W12.

Viscosity rating: 0w-30

right then ,now i'm getting it,so the synta gold they used is ok for petrol engines not on variable(mines not),but being 5w 40 it( the car) would be more suitable on the vw 503.01 (0w 30) as suggested.

course of action?get dealer to put new filter on and correct oil, free of charge of course

I don't know what the differences are between VW 503 00 and 503 01 oils but the former is the one recommended for the 150 and 180bhp versions of the 1.8T engine on variable servicing and not the latter. 503 01 spec oil is not a replacement for 503 00 oil - it is a different oil developed for arguably more arduous applications. That said, it might be the case that it offers better protection for modded 1.8T engines, but there is no reason for Skoda/VAG to test it on engines they don't want owners to mod. For fixed service intervals a multigrade high lubricity oil should offer better protection than a multigrade oil, so the choices boil down to a VW 500 00 or 502 00 oil. Looking at the comprehensive summary of VW oil specs here on SEATCupra.net, a 502 00 oil would appear to be the better choice. If Synta Gold meets either of those specs - but preferably 502 00 - then it is fine and there are no adverse warranty implications. Can anyone confirm what VW specs it does meet?

PS It would be really useful to have a list of oils by specs so that we can all see what the options are for various engines and servicing regimes.

PPS If I can cast a further stone into the pond, Castrol Formula SLX (not to be confused with Castrol SLX LongLife II) is a VW 502 00/505 00/503 01 0W-30 fully synthetic oil so perhaps offers the best of both worlds for fixed service intervals. Comments?
