09 facelift - fixed or variable servicing ?

Featured Replies

 I have ordered a facelifted scout on order and have the option of fixed or variable servicing being programmed in, so which will work out cheaper in the long run, I am favouring variable. cheers - Stuart.

Whats your anticipated annual mileage?.

My 09 was set up for variable but being a low mileage user I had it changed to annual. The Maxidot now shows this.

If you do a lot of motorway mileage variable seems best, if you do all city commuting fixed is probably more suitable. If you're on variable the car will tell you when the oil needs changing anyway, so its not riskier. Variable interval services cost more because of the fancy oil needed AFAIK...

;) Hi all, annual mileage should be around 9-10k as we will be out more with the caravan on the back, bassa did your maxidot come as standard ? will it not take the 'fancy' oil anyway ? (505 06 ?) cheers - Stuart. ;)

If you're towing then you should be on fixed, regardless of annual mileage, according to VAG.

For 10K miles per year, you most likely will need fixed service intervals as it suits that mileage well.

Oil wise, if you have gone for the PD diesel then it must use the fancy 507.01 oil regardless of service intervals.

Check your PR codes on the front page of your service book and it will be listed there.

If you find QG0 or QG2 it is set for fixed service intervals Engine oil change yearly and inspection sevice 2 yearly.

If it reads QG1 then it is set for 2 years/ variable length servicing.

All can be changed by your dealer so you can get the best VFM for yourself.

It is standard when you opt for the multi function steering wheel otherwise it's a £125 factory fit option. Originally my car was set up for variable so I popped my car into the dealer. They plugged it into their VAGcom and reset it for the annual service regime as per my request - a 2 min. job - the maxidot now shows the annual service timing countdown.

Since my car was originally set up for variable servicing, I expect/hope it has Shell Helix Ultra Extra which is designed for a 2 year life span or 30,000 Km. However the oil will now be changed when the 12 monthly service is due and no doubt they will then use a more normal grade?

If the deal includes Free Servicing then that's every 10K, or every 12months depending on which comes first...

My baby is 1 next week..will have approx 8k on the clock.., and is on variable..spoke to my dealer, and they said waste of time to do a service..the whole point of variable, is the quality of oil used..it's meant to last longer then 'normal' oil, hence the longer servicing period

That's what two dealer have told me, will be done about 7000 miles come 1 year old....

So i emailed Skoda UK and asked should I be on fixed or not with my mileage and got back the below reply: It seems fixed but far from helpful about why etc, it's seems all of VAG are back paddling on variable if you read the press and web sites, just your local dealer still seems in love with variable for use all....

"Thank you for your email dated 29 June 2009, regarding your Octavia.

I have spoken to our Technical Support Team who have confirmed that the variable service plan is for more long distance journeys and higher mileage use, where the fixed service plan is recommended for people who do not do as much mileage.

A Skoda Approved Retailer can change the service plan from variable to fixed. This would need to be done when your next service is carried out.

I trust this information clarifies your enquiry and thank you for taking the time to contact me."

I have been with my dealer for several years, and they are the poodles privates..they do what is needed, not what is going to give them money..that is why they have such a big and regular custom base :)

Picked up the Scout last week and its been set for 2yrs or 20,000 mls so it must be on variable servicing, its got QG1 in the book so I will just keep an eye on everything, what oil will I use for topping up ? cheers - Stuart.

Less than 8.5K/year you should be on fixed according to the VW website on the subject.

Remember low mileage is just as bad on the engine and oil as high mileage ;)
