Remap - how much extra for insurance?

Featured Replies

Just considering a remap (probably Revo) for my 2.0 PD and all the extra torque that will bring:)

How much extra do you think my insurer will charge? I do pretty high mileage, and my annual policy is about £250 at the mo.

I know the easy answer is 'ring them' - but I'm not in the mood for 20 minutes on the line to a call centre thousands of miles away.......

Thanks!

Well... that's the only answer that will apply to you. Everyone's circumstances are different, so the only way to get a true price is to call them.

take your height in cm, multiply it by your weight in kilo's, then subtract how many kids you've got and multiply the total by your age. divide this by your shoe size and then multiply it by a random number and thats your premium increase :)

I can be slightly more helpful than that and say that my insurance on a PD Vrs went from £340 to £380.

But your age, sex, marital status, housing status, employment status, claims history, convictions, postcode and inside leg measurement are (possibly) different from the OP.

Thanks Nobafett - so that's about 15% or so on top. Cheers. I assume you are glad you had the remap?

Absolutely right, the only way you will know is to ask for yourself. That said, recently one insurer (think it was Adrian Flux, but not totally sure) said they worked on approximately how much (as a percent) your power had gone up over standard.

i.e. if you had 200bhp standard and went up to 240bhp (a 20% increase) then your policy would go up by roughly 20% also, but I stress the roughly.

his quote means nothing to you as everything in your life will be different, hence the replies to call is the only answer.

Nothing if you don't tell 'em :P

Do you think insurance companies would check in the event of a claim?

yes

no

Probably very wise Mike, it's not worth the risk - if it was an expensive accident, I would expect the insurers go to some length checking the vehicle.

Both Sky and Greenlight didn't charge any extra for me. 35 no accidents , full NCB. 45bhp increase on last car 25bhp on current (although it isn't remapped yet).

I live within the gravitational field of Manchester, so my premiums went from sky-high to exorbitant just from a Dragon box - although the pain from the power hike means anything else is notification-only, and doesn't affect my premium... IMO, the GBP30 per month it costs me in insurance is well worth it! :D

Try Chris Knott..My mk1 vrs actually went down when I changed from Admiral to them after my remap!

My insurers (Direct Line) charged me £45 halfway through a £200 policy when I had my Fabia VRS remapped. The policy included some extras, base price was £150. The advisor asked me what a remap was, then asked what increase in power I had and seemed to work from that. Quite honestly I got the impression they just made up a figure but £45 is not a lot to pay to know I am fully covered.

I'm not sure whether an insurance company really would check but as people here have said, if it was a really nasty crash and in particular if a large payout was likely they may well do to try and find an excuse not to pay, not to mention if there was any negligence on your part the police might also want to examine your car.

I don't think Direct Line really "do" mods so I will shop around at renewal time.

I'm interested to hear that, as they won't even quote for modified cars (online, anyway)

It doesn't surpise me to hear that - as I said they seemed to make the figure up and I remember the advisor not knowing what a remap was and having to ask for help - that was after pressing buttons to select the department to notify of changes to my car!! Maybe though it is just a case that mods are too specialist to store on a database and quote on-line.

Mine was £40ish for remaining 10 months of policy with Adrian Flux. This was based on a 40 BHP increase. £89 for a remaining 9 months isn't that bad though is it? Roughly £2.50 a week I think. I don't think Churchill are known for their understanding of modifications so maybe get some other quotes from more specialist insurers just to see

As for whether to tell insurance or not… YES, you have to tell them. You're not insured otherwise and I know that would pi55 the hell out of me if you wrecked my car in a crash and I found out I wasn't going to get paid ;)

Mine went up by £50 ...so not too bad ...and worth it for the extra fun factor :D
