Kumhos or Hankooks

Featured Replies

After discovering at the National Day (thanks Des and FatBoySlim for the help) that the inside quarters of my front wheels are f***ed from bumping up the kerb onto my drive I'm looking to order two new front tyres ASAP.

I'm undecided about what to go for - I have Kumho KU31s on the back at the moment and to have the same fitted on the front by a mobile fitter will be about £175.

However I've been wanting to try Hankook Evo V12s for a while as they've had good reviews by a couple of members on here. I can get them for £137 from Camskill and then fit/balance/disposal by my local garage is £20 per tyre so comes to £177 total.

At the moment I'm edging towards the Hankooks as I had Kumhos on a previous car and they wear fairly quickly on the front (not as quick as Toyos though!). What are the Hankooks like for wear?

I would never have guessed that looking at the very off wear on the tyre! Shame your spare is no longer shiny and new! :P

Never used Camskill (highly recommended on here though), but have used Blackcircles.com. They were more pricey but were able to get the tyres in and fitted by a local garage down the road very quickly. Can usually get a few quid discount off them too making the prices a bit more comparable to Camskill.

Blackcircles are about a fiver more expensive to have the Kumhos supplied fitted at that place in Tonbridge than having the guy from Event tyres come out and do them on my drive... and it doesn't look like they do the Hankooks either :(

Amazes me how cheap you got your Toyos on Blackcircles, every time I look they are megabucks, £40 per tyre dearer than Kumhos :rotz:

ive just had the front 2 replaced gone from kuhmo's to toyo t1r and after 300miles can say the toyo's are so much better on grip much prefer and camskill 2 for £135 i still have the kuhmo's on the rear but will replace with toyo's as soon as they are worn ;)

get toyo's buddy you wont go wrong

and i payed £10 to get them fited and balanced etc at the local kwickfit cash job

PM'd :)

I don't know about the Toyos, I've had T-1Rs before on the front of a FWD car and the grip went to **** if it rained after a dry spell :( I saw a post recently about someone who'd had a pair of Toyos wear out in 5000 miles! That's only 4 months of driving for me so I need something thats a better compromise between wear rate and grip.

Still undecided :rotz:

Thats the worst time for grip with any tyre imo.

My kumhos lasted 5k :confused::confused::confused:

Toyos I get 10k and plenty of grip ;)

Hankooks v12 for me fella. I have got them all round & I'm impressed with them:thumbup:, but I'm slightly impartial as I haven't tried the Khumo or Toyo's & I won't be doing either when I eventually need some more rubber:P

I've run Hankooks on my Fabia for as long as I can remember, originally the Ventus Sport K104 and latterly the V12 Evo's. I only switched the rears to Kumho last time as Hankook were out of stock.

No issues with them.

Happy with my Kumhos but they are not going to last much more than 10k... can't moan as I didn't get any more out of the conti sports. Can't say I noticed any loss in grip, just £70 left i back pocket.

I thought the Toyo's are not good in the wet? Hankooks seem to be flavour of month with taxi drivers, I think I may give them a bash next.

Why don't you get a plank of wood, and plane it down to make a ramp onto your drive..that's what i've done

That was me. It turned out my tracking was slightly out. But even then, I still think they wore pretty quick. TBH though, you get what you pay for. I've replaced with Michelins. They are even grippier than the Toyos, tons better in the wet (and I mean torrential/ aquaplaning resistance/wet braking have all been recently tested to the max) and they'll last way longer. But they're £115 a corner and a premium product. Toyo are not, neither are Hankook. Cheap tyres will either grip or last. Expensive tyres will sometimes do both, and very well. As always, you get what you pay for.

Given the area you're looking at, I would try the Hankooks. I was tempted, but couldn't get hold of any in time to have them fitted on my day off. Plus another opinion on here couldn't hurt ;)

I'm just going to park it up the road from now on... although having pointed out to the rest of my family thats why their cars have always worn on the inside front edges after a year or so they are on about paying the council to have the kerb lowered

I've had 2 kumho's fitted a couple of weeks ago 205/45/16, fitted and balanced for £55 per corner, at my local tyre dealer in Knaresborough.

I have had the same issue with my Fabia

Always thought it would be safer in the yard......but guess what , not any longer :(

They looked just like yours too

I can't thank you guys enough for having a look at them at the weekend, if we hadn't got to the bottom of what was causing it I would've been getting new front tyres every year and getting the tracking done and all sorts and been none the wiser!

So what's it going to be chicken_eyebrow? Kumhos or Hankooks?

:D

Does anyone know which one is quieter? Kumhos did really well in the Auto Express test a while back but can't find any noise reviews for the Hankooks

I've plumped for the Hankooks, ordered them today to be delivered to my local garage and they're fitting them on Friday. The Kumhos would've been a few quid cheaper but I get the impression they would be worn out within half a year on the front.

I'll stick a Hankook review on here once they've had a few thousand miles on them.

there a great tyre youve made the right choice

I think I'm going to go for the Hankooks as well.

I need to get a new set before driving to the middle of France for our holiday in September, and the price is right, the reviews seem good, so I'll give them a go, unless chicken_eyebrow comes back on here to say they're pants

  • 1 month later...

Any updates on the Hankooks mate? I'll be getting some new 'uns in a few weeks so unless they're rubbish (which I don't think they will be) I'll be going for the Evo V12s

Interested in the V12s next too - so update please :)

Cheers,

Steve

Ive had mine on for about 2k miles now and I like them. they seem to hold on well in the wet and really well in the dry :D

I'll take them off tonight and check the wear rates but in terms of grip they've been good, not much better than the Avons they replaced in the dry but grip under braking has improved a lot and in the wet they are much much better

Short review to follow tomorrow.

Bit late but heres a quick review

Tyres were priced as follows and were ordered from Camskill Cheap Tyres Discount Tyres & Japanese Import Car Parts Spares Tuning Performance Servicing Accessories ::

2 of 2055017YHANKR93XL.K110[2] HANKOOK TYRES / CAR / HANKOOK K110 V12 EVO HANKOOK K 110 V12 EVO - 205/50R17 93Y XL Total Price £132.80

Carriage .............................. £4.90

Order Total .......................... £137.70

Grip

I noticed a massive improvement in the braking grip straight away, the tyres they replaced had worn abnormally but still had plenty of grip left in the middle and outer edges but the Hankooks were very very grippy when braking.

The grip under acceleration in the dry wasn't much better than the Avons at first but is slowly improving as I wear the tyres in.

I was most impressed by the grip in the wet, and in conditions where a dry road becomes suddenly wet (sudden showers). The tyres grip a lot better than before in the corners and I really have to pile into a corner at idiot speeds for it to break traction and understeer.

Wear

The wear seems to be pretty good, they have done almost 1000 miles so far and lost maybe 0.25 of a mm, they are still showing 7.5mm and slightly more in places. If that keeps up then they will last in excess of 14,000 miles. I don't thrash it around much though so it might not be representative of the treatment they'd get at the hands of other members.

The inner and outer edges have worn a bit more than the middles although I try not to corner hard if I can help it so could be down to them being underinflated for the past 2 weeks

Noise

They are quieter than the Avons (which were mis-shapen anyway so not really much of a comparison!)
