Passenger side window regulator broken.. do it myself or take to Skoda?

Featured Replies

Window went up, made a big cracking noise, now falls down but won't wind back up again - I'm guessing Window regulator... do I do it myself, or do I take it to Skoda? Does anyone have experience of how much this generally costs to put right at a dealership?

Cheers!

Ed

probably an hours labour at least

have you siliconed your door carriers on to stop the water leaks ?

Had the rears done at a Skoda garage for something like £40 a year or so ago. Not the fronts! :)

Ed. Not neccessarily the regulator. It could be those little plastic clips again, courtesy of VW. Have a look at this VW forum in the Mk.4 section Forums - uk-mkivs as it has been much discussed by the Golf boys, or should I say "Disgust". There are some metal ones available somewhere. There be a 'how to' thread as well. Have a search.

OK this might help diagnose it further.. the window has been noisy when it has been reaching the top of it's travel for a while - enough for me to not find this fault suprising in the slightest.

Further info:

Window wouldn't go up at all. If I put the window to go down, it would go down.. eventually. Then it started to fall down on it's own.

How much of the door to I have to disassemble to diagnose the fault? Just the trim over the top, or the whole door carrier? :(

Faintree Garage just called back.. £134.55 inc. VAT and labour if it is the window regulator...

been lucky so far and haven't had this happen to me yet, even after 2 Mk4 Golfs and the Fabia. I think its just the door trim that has to come off only. Check on the link to be sure.

Can tell you the regulator it's self is about £75 as I've recently bought one.

It's possible to do your self quite easily IF your carrier is bolted in.. If it's a later riveted type then your gunna need someone to rivet it all back together as non of the normal hardware stores I tried sold rivets or hand tools anywhere near big enough.

I ended up stripping the door, tapping up the window, drilling out the rivets, gaffa taping the new regulator into place and then driving down to Skoda and having them rivet it back together, for me to then re-assemble it at home.. they charged me £25 for 15min labour and 10 rivets though. so unless you can do it all your self not much to be saved doing it that way..

My main problem was the last owners sound deadening and ice install as well as having just sealed the carrier in THE DAY IT BROKE! so took me a good few hours just removing the fresh sealant, still.. proved to myself I'd got suitable sealant ;)

Looks like the carrier is bolted in with nice shiny gold bolts :)

I had the motor replaced by Skoda a few months back. Can check the price for you. I was just out of warranty so called SKoda UK who contributed 35% is to the cost as I had a full Skoda history on the car.

If you don't ask, you don't get.............

I had to change both window regulators on the Wifes' Fabia last year.

You will need an M8 12 pointed driver bit for the door lock (It's not a torx bit) also the three rivets holding the speaker need to be drilled out and you might break some of the plastic retaining clips on the door card.

Here is a guide for a passat, the Fabia is not that different.

Part from TPS to dad's trade account is £58.97 ex VAT going up to £67.82 inclusive of VAT...

Lucky Sod! ;)

You'll find it all straight forward then.. be careful with the loom though, the metal holes in the carrier are really sharp and can start to slice away at them if your not careful!

Also, take it easy on the connection for the lock actuator. I managed to bust the clip on mine with out applying much pressure. It's in an awkward position so you've just gotta fiddle with it a bit.

Just as a side note.. They've almost trebled the amount of rubbery foam sealant that's pre applied to the bottom and 1st couple of inches of the side of the door carrier. Obviously they did eventually take note of the leaks. :D

I have unclipped all of the plastic trim ready for someone to have a look at it for me, but can't get the top part (along the top of the door) off.. how do I do that, do I pull up really hard or do I have to unclip something else? Can't really afford to break the door card as it's leathered by The Seat Surgeons and will be expensive to replace :D

I've always found them to be a pain.. Luckily on my vRS they were still quite loose from the previous owners removal..

I did notice though it might be easier to try jimmying it up off of the door from the outside, with the window down or removed, as you can see the lip and get to it from the internal side of the door.. again, be careful as I think you could potentially damage the outer window sill seal if to harsh.

Oh, yeah.. and as previously said you'll have to find some way to re - attaching the speaker. Cuz mine was already upgraded there was some mouldy old MDF rings there with a 6.5" woofer. I'd planned an upgrade for my last fabia and kept the collars I'd bought to do it so was just a case of buying some little nuts and bolts and attaching it before mounting the speaker back in. That said.. the rivets you CAN get from homebase etc are probably big enough for this job.

I'll be leaving it to an expert to actually carry out the repair, I'm just doing the 'donkey work' and removing trim to speed stuff up - haha....

Did mine a year or so ago - replacement inner door skin £35 from a scrapper and about an hour and a half of my time. I also made sure all the runners were well greased up (the original grease had dried out causing the break) and having learnt the lesson on one side also took the opportunity to part-strip the drivers side and grease that up as well.

Many thanks to Ross (Lummox) who is very kindly helping me out with this repair on behalf of Unit 18 :).
