ESP - Is It A Waste Of Time ?

So wouldn't your history of a "lazy" Haldex point to an electronics glitch?

Mattijs

I'm coming to that conclusion as it is only on the traction side, when setting off, where I have a problem.

Podwin and JawsandPaws both have had 4x4 related electronics replaced but I get the feeling that there are very few dealers in the UK that would have any idea how to spot a 4x4 problem that wasn't really obvious !

My plan is now to hope for REALLY bad weather then I can try and get some consistent way of seeing where the problem is - that way at least I just don't get a dealer either saying a) I've no idea or B) We'll replace the sensors, then try the control unit etc etc.

Other than that, I still find the car very likeable to drive and have just 'scalped' a very aggressive BMW 3 series driver much to my satisfaction...

Seems like an awkward problem for a dealer to solve. I would agree that the "trial-and-error" method of curing things is all too common with even the best of dealers...

Well, the RS was an absoloute dream to drive in the snow we had here on Monday. I have to drive up a fairly steep road to get out of the street i live in, and the ASR coped very nicely thankyou very much.

4x4, ESP...who needs them? :D

Colin might need them as he wasn't all too pleased with the ESP on his car. Or is that because it doesn't have any? :D

The WRC version does have ESP, as per the option on Seat's. What I can say is that I did not have the real chance to see how haldex and esp work. I suspect with the extra drive it really works in snow.

For normal driving conditions, eg throwing it into a roundabout, braking in apex, errr roundabout, or other stability effecting situations, I think it would help most.

Stability is in my mind what the ecu sees as a yaw and slide, not what the haldex sees, which AFIWC caterd for rotational slip, eg never wheel spun it. thus the two together should work really well. As they did on the 4x4 IMHO. But Not without some slack or restricitng results, mostly highlighted on track (limited time I was on them). The ESP on roads where wheel slip led to movement in the car seemed okay. Snow or grass has to be the test bed for you, alternative I guess is to meet up with another 4x4 and drive the same tests. :dtp:
