Does anyone know the exact cut off point between PD & CR?

I'm curious to know whether you can get a '57 CR or an '08 PD or if CR was only introduced on '08 plates.

Thanks.

There was quiet a big overlap where it was possible to get a PD or CR engine. CR is very recent, I dont think they were around on a 57 plate.

CRs came in on later 08 plates. Sure somebody will know for sure but I think first dealer deliveries came at the end of June so I guess they started making them about week 20 or 21, something like that.

EDIT - Found in another post that they started in week 22.

BTW, don't totally discount getting a PD170. When I initially went shopping for my current car, I was only wanting a CR. Then I thought, hang on I can get a PD170 that bit cheaper and it will be my last chance to own a nearly new PD car - I'll have years to drive CR cars. The PD170 is pretty much the ultimate product of VAG's PD development which makes it a bit more historically interesting somehow. The PDs are more resilient to misfueling too. Finally, the PD DPF removal mod is already available.

Nothing wrong with the 140PD either.

People say the PD is clattery and unrefined. I say not. it's the best sounding diesel i've ever driven. A nice roar without the van-like clatter. Apparantly, they are also more fun to drive, but i've not driven a common rail so i would'nt know.

The CR came out the end of June 08 in Ireland that is.

I've got a PD Golf GT Sport at the moment & I think it sounds like a bucket of bolts at low speeds or stationary, a little noisy at speed, whereas a previous car (Pug) with a CR diesel was comparatively quiet and smooth at low speeds or stationary & very quiet at speed.

This is going to be a tough choice for me to make when I come to buy my next car, Diesel (Economy & Low Tax) or Petrol (Smooth & Quiet, but Higher Tax!)....

My mileage says I should go for Petrol, but head says go for Diesel! Arrrgh!:banghead:

Any idea of a quick way to find out if a person's car is a PD or CR?

One of the lads had his car in and asked if his was a PD or CR, he was told the vRS Diesels ONLY came in a CR , now we all know thats rubbish.

Look on the sticker in the spare wheel well. The CRs have CR DPF in the model code. Alternatively look at the engine cover. The CR engine cover is grey not black and has 4 diagonal ridges iirc.

EDIT - found it...

Thanks for your replies.

The truth is that I would rather have the PD! Having read up on them quite a bit I'm of the belief that it is potentially more reliable than CR, "bombproof" was mentioned!

Thing is I occasionally see '57 VRS's advertised as CR & I'm not sure they can be. As Gaff says some people don't seem to have the full facts, one dealer told me their TD's didn't have turbos!!!!

I believe you can get a code from the manual to differentiate between the two CEGA for CR, BWM for PD iirc.

I drove a PD estate recently & was very impressed, I didn't find the engine noisy but did notice a fair bit of road noise. One tester suggested that the estates do suffer from that, anyone else noticed it?

My CR engine cover is all black

Ah ok, but it has diagonal ridges right?

The engine cover isn't a good idea IMHO.

I don't know about the 1.9, but on the 2.0 PD 140, the oil filler cap is much further to the right than on the engine pictured above.

I'd think the option code is the safest way to do it.
