Mpg????????

Featured Replies

Fill your car until the pump clicks once.

reset the trip computer before driving off.

When it needs filling up return to the same garage and same pump if possible and refil until it clicks once.

note the litres to fill up and miles travelled.

Divide the miles by the litres and times the answer by 4.55 to give you the accurate MPG

THIS IS THE ONLY ACCURATE WAY TO CHECK MPG

The miles until empty figure given by the MFD is based on the most recent trip and will not necesarily represent the miles to empty based on the average mpg over a tankful

hope that helps

Bearing in mind speedometers and odometers are also not accurate most over read by up to 10% so whatever figure you come up with will never be 100% accurate it will only ever be a "best guess"

I drive mine "enthusiastically" and rarely average below 45mpg to a tankful

Without much effort i can get it to average 50-55 just by changing my driving style a bit.

VRS 170 PD currently with 14k

I get a displayed MPG on average of approx 38 for each tankful (either v power or standard shell with millars added) on the maxidot. I've tweaked the calibration of the Maxidot as it was previously 2% out to the manually calculated figure so that it reads pretty much spot on.

I've never had over 500 miles on a tank full even with quite sedate driving :(

Is it broken?

@ OP thats sounds rather low, my petrol 2.0 which isnt thrashed but isnt driven like a vicar i have over the past year an average of 37.1mpg althrough since i topped the oil up im getting a bit less, however on a journey to work i get 40-50mpg depending on my driving style so i would expect at least 45-55mpg from yours being a diesel. It might be worth giving it a good hard run for 10 miles on high revs to clean the system and see how it goes from there. The only other thing i can think of is perhaps its the gears your in, try keeping the revs at about 3k rpm in each gear and see how that improves?

Does it at all hesitate when you floor it?

I was getting about 42 on my Oct 2.0tdi. But since I had new tyres and the tracking done (it was way out) and also had one of the aircon sensors fixed so the aircon doesn't run continuously, I get 48, an even mix of urban driving and dual carriageway. I drove from London to Cardiff and back twice on the same tank last week

think there is meant to be a good differance between the CR & PD in a few reviews ive read.

so the DSG is a bit more gutsy than the manual?

To and from work, which is all town driving, my 1.9 TDI givers me 44/45 mpg, and not much more on motorways :(

things that could affect it is:

type of fuel used

tyre pressure

your driving style

lack of/ too much oil

dirty air filter

service

reset of ecu

Paul,

I agree with all of the things you've suggested.

However, as the OP is comparing two identical cars, I'll assume that 1 & 3 on your list haven't changed. Hopefully the OP checks 2 & 4. The car seems to have been like it from new, so that perhaps rules out 5 & 6.

Perhaps the OP who appears to be in the Sheffield area should have a word with Nick (Wega3) or Ben (Shark90) & see if either of these nice gentleman could plug VAGCOM into his car. There's a meet fairly locally (Mansfield) this Tuesday, I think they are both planning to be there.

cheers ... Darren

of course as you say vag com. I had new tyres on at the start of last week and checked the pressure yesterday to find they were all at 2.1 bars even through they claimed to put them at 2.2 However they are back at 2.35 which i prefer and i should see an improvement again on my mpg as at the moment im struggling to get my normal figures, but now see why.

Thanx all for your input, might try and make the Mansfield meet on Tuesday

just noticed since doing my tyres from the under inflated 2.1 bars at the garage to 2.35 i did get 5% better mpg today  but was slightly noiser so might drop them down to the 2.2 recommended by skoda.

My new 140ps PD Octavia is indicating something under 40mpg at present, running in and driving gently. Hope it improves- my old Passat 100ps estate got 44mpg overall right through its 140,000miles.

My 07 VRS PD170 with Bluefin upgrade [showing 212 BHP / 299 lbft on RR] with Pipercross panel filter using BP Ultimate diesel + double dosing with Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 additive never returns less than 50mpg [brim to brim check] and has managed just over 60mpg on journeys up and down to Poole from the Midlands when in lazy driving mode!?! No other mods but now running on full set of Uniroyal Rainsport 2 tyres set at 2.25bar, these are far better than the original fit Conti Sport Contact 2 for noise, wet / dry grip and economy.

I feel your pain!! I've had my car for about 2 1/2 years! And my long term average has never gotten over 40mpg! I the commute to work..I tend to get around 34-38mpg!

When our company used to have a 1.9tdi pool car...I was getting 50+ on the same commute driving harder!

I think the two big changes between my old 1.9 (1999 EU II) & the 2.0 (2005 EU IV) are that the emission gubbins has changed in that time, so the engine burns fuel to make it "greener" plus the big fat tyres have a huge effect.

I could predict my economy on the old car & manage my right foot to hit a target figure on a given familiar run in favourable conditions. The newer one, seems quite random, some days I've followed wagons at 56mph for miles & struggled to get 50mpg, yet I've had the same figures on German autobahns at much more exciting speeds.

If I had any mechanical skills I think I'd be fiddling about under the bonnet, disconnecting stuff, but as I've still got a warranty, I'd best leave it alone.

Well I'm thinking next time its due for a service...its might be getting a bit more oomph under the bonnet! If I'm getting crap MPG might as well make use of the engine!

I manage to get 460 - 480 miles between fills. This equates to about 43mpg (brim to brim averaged over 18K) - the car says pretty much the same. I have seen an average of 52mpg appear transiently on the many miles of 50mph road works on the M1 at Notts.

My 2.0 TDI DSG will show over 50mpg average on a cruise controlled speedo reading of 70 over 100 miles or so. The best I can get out of it is high 50s at a steady 50. This is all using the trip computer which I find to be quite accurate.

One thing I did notice is it wasn't very good for the first 10,000 or so miles but, once it settled in, it got gradually better. It will still do mid 50s on a good run and it's now done over 130,000 miles.

My PD 170 VRS gets 38MPG, mainly because it a 7 mile commute it's mainly doing.

On a trip to the airport yesterday, I got 44.6 doing between 60-80 mph over a 100 mile round trip.

I recently worked out the miles covered compared to fuel used and to my surprise the figure returned by the OBC was EXACTLY right:eek:

2.0 PD 140 DSG.

Never broke 500m to the tank till I crossed the 12K mark. Currently at 18k and my last refill was after 520miles, with 45miles left on the maxidot. Nope I don't drive like a nun, but this has been doing long distance stuff. Normal day to day I get 450m to the tank which I am happy with.

Actually I've done a few "Vicar with his mum in the car" runs this last week or so & got worse figures. Light throttle, changing up at 2k etc... that all used to work on the older car, seem to make this one worse. Whereas changing up at 3k with a more "making good progress" style, seem to use less fuel ... am I going daft ... surely this doesn't make sense.

Although there's been plenty of aircon / blowers / wipers etc & some blustery gusty winds too. But not enough to make a real difference?

I've seem to remember a few bits about Fabia owners disconnecting EGRs & diverting crank case breather pipes. Has anyone done the same on an 2.0tdi Octy to save fuel & did it work?

WOW!! We have never got higher than 48mpg and that was according to the OBC

I average around the 42/43 mark with 20 mile daily commutes. On a long run, I can get up to 60 driving very gently.

Hi all just filled up again (3 click method) at the same petrol station and the fuel at 99.9p a litre again. I got £51 in the tank and the on board computer said i had done 466 miles with 40 left in the tank. Does this seam right?

That does seem a disapointing result, I can see why you're not happy, with 41mpg!

I've only had my vRS for 3 weeks, so have only filled it twice, but on both occasions it returned 50mpg.

I have found it is harder to hold the average up on motorways, possibly because it takes quite a lot of boost to cruise at high speed even in sixth?
