The fabia effect

Featured Replies

I wondered if anyone else here has experienced this.

Since owning my Fabia for a year, quite a few times I have been approached at filling stations and when my car is parked. The interest in my Fabia has been surprising to say the least. People question how I find it, where I got it, dealer information and sometimes just compliments.

For a discontinued supermini to attract this kind of interest is something I have not seen before. In all my years of owning cars, no-one has ever approached me about them. I think that the Fabia now seems more interesting than when it was current. It certainly is better looking than many current cars.

I see that many Fabia owners here on the forums do their cars down rather. From what I have experienced in my year of ownership I say be more proud of your car - you have made a good choice.

Anyone else here had any comments or compliments from strangers?

TH

I was getting the local ATS to fit my Toyo's the other day and the manager came through to the front desk and said "Is that one of those vRS Fabia's?".. I grinned and said yeah... then he said "there meant to be a bit speedy aren't they? so I replied "Yeah, they have allot of torque and ya can map them upto 160bhp no problem".... Apparently his mates wife has one and he'd been out in it... Did wonder if his mate was 2 doors down as there's a SE always parked there :D

i get folk asking questions quite a lot at filling stations, usually i get the old 'skoda's arent what they used to be eh' remarks

I get quite a lot of postives back, but most are "Well... it ain't bad for a Skoda I suppose!"

Mine's not the average fabia so I get the odd question usually, "That IS a fabia isn't it?" etc etc.

I get laughed at for it. :rotz: Friggin' chavs. Just cos I haven't put spoilers and 20 inch rims etc on it. Still, despite being a 1.4 still probably beat their 1.0 Corsas.

Come to think of it, the only people who have complimented its asthetics are my grandparents.

I get this often at filling stations when they ask me about the Skoda and notice I'm filling it with diesel as most peoplel assume it would be a petrol hatchback and not a diesel, my latest one was yesterday when I was getting a puncture fixed at my local tire fitting company, they complimentted the car and said how it would make a meal of his Mazda 626.

try driving a mk2 golf around as a daily, the amount of randomers i get approaching me is unreal,i can't get out of it without someone walking up for a chat

Nope - never had any questions or compliments. Not a sausage.

i do get a few for mine, normaly from other hatchback owners, Most of my comments are regarding the looks, as it dosn't look like a normal fabia. :D

I used to get the odd comment. Not so much anymore apart from at recent track days, but they were going to be commented on as we had 4 there :D

Yep I've had a few comments - last weekend I was at Top Gear in St Albans getting a couple tyres put on, one guy asked why I had'nt removed the rest of my badges so no one could tell what it was! and another dude came up to me and said "woh a Skoda, that's a bit different".

Being honest it's one of the reasons I bought it in the first place

I know exactly what you mean, especially when people hear my MK2 with a VR in it, they always ask questions! Mine's not a daily though!

I've owned 12+ VW GTI's, VR6's, and my Fabia get more attention than any of them ever had!!

People always say: Is that one of them VRS Skoda things?:rotz:

Sorry to bump this... but.

I was filling up yesterday and a guy with an 04 A3 asked if it was for sale.. I grinned and said no, but he was really keen, "it is a VRs, aint it? They're mental" asking after the top speed and BHP etc!

I asked him if he would really wanna swop from an Audi for a Skoda and he said yeah with a lot of enthusiasm!..

So there ya go Skoda 1, Audi 0 ;)

(made my day it did!)

I would never describe the fabia vrs as "mental" though. Mental is Focus RS/ST material. Not 130hp (moderate power at best) Skoda ;)

But cool nonetheless!

Get this all the time! I must say the times you feel best about it are when a Subaru or R32 driver gives it the "IS THAT A DIESEL?" :o after being glued to their back bumper for a bit!

Skoda prap prap :D

Got something like this a few weeks ago.

I was filling up, and a tidy-looking black Fabia vRS pulled into the other queue. I knew it was owned by a policeman, so when he got out and started to approach I didn't know whether to say hello or run ;) not that I have anything to run for of course...

Anyway, he starts asking what engine I have, what spec it is, what I've done to it etc as it doesn't exactly look standard. So I tell him.

''Well you've got taste son, cracking choice of car and you've made a good job of it!''

My response? ''Thanks! Um...fancy a swap?''

Only once when a lad was grinning as I paid and said Nicr car mate! (Thought he was going to mug me!) lol

Couple a friends have said it makes their **** tighted when I give it some as they weren't expecting that kind of speed from a skoda desiel. Best I've had is from a Fezzy Mk 3 1.6 driver who had a constant sight of my rear bumper only to pull up the the light and asked me what the hell was in my car cause it "F-ing fast that mate!" :D

yeah get this all the time skoda are a rare sight in my part of the country nearest dealers is 60mile away, people wonder what the hell mine is and boyz and girls in CTR's are gettin fed up with the fabia leavin them for dust, and few locals in evo's ****ed off at not being able to loose me on the windy ones,

Completely agree with ya! :)

What's the smallest engine in the A3? He probably had it ;)

bloke found me at work the other day when spotted the car apparently he was following me around some twisty bits on a slip road on the m20 he wanted to know about the car as he had issues keeping up with me on the corners in his boxster i just laugh and asked when the "L" plate were comming off but he seemed serious!

i got stopped and chatted at by the guy in the security gate of Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome on my way into a driving day with SWMBO.

Didn't see him stop any of the exotica that was avaialble for driving that day but a little red Fab was to his taste!

Wanted to know what it was like, MPG, performance, normal stuff, said he'd been mulling one over for a while and seeing mine had convinced him

  • 1 month later...

I'm gunna bump this again, because..

Dropping of my Furby to have the rear end sorted the guy doing the visual inspection said something along the lines of "how do ya find this, cuz these vRS's are meant to be pretty quick aren't they?" I said it was quick but not amazing.. but that a map could get them up to 160 with little else needing modifying... He went on to tell me they had one in before that the guy delivering it back to the customer was really impressed with. It was probably mapped ;)

That said though, the Insignia (yuk) they've given me is soooooooooooo slow, no power... doing 60 in 6th, foot down, nothing... tried in 5th.. nothing, tried in 4th.. a little something so tried 3rd and almost bounced of the limiter (all gentle changes).. so maybe they are kinda quick and we all just get used to them ;)

Haha this reminds me, I was up on the Isle of Lewis right up at the top headland going for a walk on a sunday (which is sabbath day so completely deserted!) and a couple in a camper van who were just leaving came over and asked how I found the VRS!! Randomly we chatted for about 10 mins and I sung its praises - I like to think I persuaded another new purchase

On a different note the seats really, really aren't compatible with outdoor pursuits. Water stains galore :thumbdwn:
