SuperChips - Any Good ?

Featured Replies

The reason why I am asking the above question is that the Skoda dealer I bought my car from is I believe , an installing agent for this company. I thought this might be one way of avoiding the warranty problem , which has put me off any power upgrades. Any comments would be appreciated.

Waste of cash.

All they do (in my experience on 2 different cars) is they overfuel.

One of the 2 cars had massive pinking, and was removed.

The other one had a slight increase - nothing noticeable - but the fuel ecomony dropped in a big way.

You're better off (and probably cheaper) to get a remap.

I think I will have a chat with my dealer about what they can do as a power upgrade ( maybe not SuperChips ) and still guarantee to fix things during the warranty period.

There are MUCH better tuners for 1.8T and 1.9PD TDI's than superchips.

MUCH better are for example:

REVO

Jabba

AmD

APR

In no particular order ;)

But would these void the 3 year warranty ?

Any form of modification will invalidate your warranty if said modification contributes to a failure.

Which is why Superchips offer a free warranty on their stuff. If your manufacturer says it ain't covered, Superchips pick up the tab.

Had one on my Octy RS for 90k miles, no problems.

Do any of the other tuners offer a similar warranty, first time I've heard anyone offering this.

oettinger, apparently.

Yes, in no apparent order lmao

... as if someone with Jabbawokky wouldn't have put them first in the list lol

Aaaanyway...

I sincerely doubt that Skoda UK would honour any drivetrain warranty if they knew the car had been remaped... Dealer approved or not.

Go for Superchips if you want

Im sure any tuner will offer a warranty on any work carried out by themselves.

Oh !................I take it that you must have Revo then Josh .............................I really didn't know :D

Perhaps the fairest way to list them would be in alphabetical order ;)

Which is what Real Skoda did IIRC :D

Ross did /do AmD off a warranty on "parts damaged as a result of the modification in the event of the manufacturer rejecting a claim" eg gearboxes?

That would be a matter to disscuss with them in the event of such a failure.

Which of course would be very unlikely ;)

And what's wrong with Star Performance? ;)

erm nothing.

star are APR distributors.

/Edit just realised you maybe talking PD tuning here and not 1.8t.

My comments are on a 1.8T

I had superchips aswelll...basicly, it did what it said; it improved performance.

I had it removed and changed to APR; the difference was huge. Now is that saying superchips is bad? Heck no as pointed out you get some sort of warranty with them and via your dealers a good chance they understand tuning and related issues. I suspect I know which dealer you are talking about.

/Mod hat on...

Cut it out guys on who lists what first...please, it matters not, save to mention a fair spread to fuel thoughts for the question asker.

/Mod hat off.

There are a large number of tuners, offering the same thing to many different things from a great range of prices. Many perhaps share very similar roots, I'd do your research and decide what is important to you. Superchips was good (in fact I have te chip somewhere) just there are better IMHO, just don't loose sleep over the warranty; after all thats why you have a newer car; or else I'd had a '74 911 and loose sleep over it not starting each morning.

Is the dealer Wings by anychance?? They offered me the Supachip when I bought my Octy and I thought about it but I've heard too many dodgy stories since deciding against it. The warrranty thing sounds good and nearly convinced me. Since then I've discovered a little company down the road called Jabbasport and as they say the rest is history!

As others have mentioned, when you modify your car, you have to make a decision - what happens if something goes wrong post modification? Different dealers have different approaches, which is down to the individuals involved in running the dealership. Some will flat out refuse to do warranty work on a modified car - others may take a more pragmatic approach. If for example, you electric mirror motor fails, they might take the sensible approach that it in all probability is not down to you having a remap, or uprated brakes, for example. At the end of the day, if they believe that they can do the work and sucessfully claim the money back from Skoda, they may well be happy to do it. It is after all, business for them.

Certain dealers offer 'approved' chips/remaps (I believe the superchips work is now serial port, so remap). Wings in Peterborough are an example who have adopted a superchips franchise) However this 'approval' will be entirely based on that dealer and has no factory approval. All well and good as long as the dealership remains in existence, under the same management, and you yourself do not move to the other end of the country.

All remaps will give you good power gains - however there will be differences in the delivery and the ultimate headline figures. There are other tuners around who offer, in the opinion of those who have had both, subjectively 'better' remaps than the superchips ones.

However, you could argue that as the superchips maps tend to be pretty conservative (mid 160s from a PD130 is the norm I believe), then it is less likely to lead to potential problems down the line (turbo failures are not unheard of on remapped PD130s in Golfs that have been taken above 175bhp-ish). However, if this is your motivation, be aware that there are cheaper options that have other benefits such a switchability, which means that the map can be disengaged, or even completely removed for trips to the dealer.
