Hi,

Have wondered for a while now about super unleaded fuel against standard unlead fuel (95 ron) ..Does anybody know whether it does make a difference to the performance/running of the vehicle..

I have thought it does in my octy rs but then do wonder thats just psychological ...I did once read that it was a marketing thing to make us buy a more expensive fuel that we did not need....

Any thoughts?

My father in law sent me a newspaper cutting a couple of weeks ago re an article on Super unleadeds (Optimax / Ultimate). A ford focus was tested on a rolling road with a gallon of unleaded then a gallon of optimax then a gallon of BP Ultimate. The tests for BHP/Torque etc were identical for all 3

The article did have a comment that modern engines adjust the timing for the petrol being used so that no matter whether it was standard or super the output would be the same. However, it also had comments from BP/Shell along the lines that Optimax/Ultimate keep the engine cleaner so that over time they are better.

I have to say that I have never seen any difference when using Optimax but with BP Ultimate I do seem to get 1-2mpg better though performance is no different

Never bothered with Optimax on our 03 plate octavia vrs but started using it when we got the 53 plate one. Might just be just coincidence but this one runs better and doesn't drink anything else.

The Furby only drinks shell diesel extra.

Is higher octane fuel not safer for turbo engines as it prevents knock? so even if performance had little gain it should be the choice for tuned performance turbo cars?

Or any other Jap import turbo car Trouble is the cars are mapped for 100 RON fuel, whereas the UK cars are mapped for 95/97 Octane fuel so unless you get your Jap import remapped, you should run it with Optimax/Super unleaded and octane booster....
