Seriously considering selling my vRS

Featured Replies

Am I mad?

I bought my Fabia vRS last July, and love it, but I hardly use it! I walk to work in the week, go out at night via the train (London) so all I really use the car for is shopping and driving back home to visit my folks. 5000 miles per annum maximum.

I'm tempted to chop the Fabia in for something that I care less about, i.e. a car that I can park and not be forever worrying about picking up a car-park ding! It would also give me some extra £££ in the bank, which will be useful in a few years when/if I'm in the position to buy a house.

I reckon I could sell the Fabia for £6000-6500, and I've seen a Megane (ar$e variant) 2.0 3dr for £3500 that looks quite nice (full leather, climate, dual sunroof etc.). Not the most inspiring car I agree, but it's not a total sh!tbox and complete downgrade.

Opinions welcomed!

Why not trade it for a base model Fabia 1.2 or 1.4, assuming a dealer will do cash your way.

Then you've got a totally inconspicuous 5 door shopping trolley.

Perhaps the newer Meganes are better but my anecdotal experience of them (Dad & a close friend) wouldn't inspire me to buy one.

running older cars is not without its pitfalls though. You need to have a budget for repairs, as cars get older so the bills get bigger and the more attention they need., then you have the dreaded MOT to worry about.

Yeah, I did think about the pitfalls. The Megane I've been looking at is an 03/ 52k, which isn't too old to be honest. But yes, as you say, the older the car, the bigger the bill.

Decisions...

and to add to what Mannyo said , all those electric things that will go wrong on the Megane will be expensive , you are best off with a basic motor

Lummox is selling a Fiesta

this would be ok , as it already has a little bit of damage , so anymore wont matter

It's not that old, but its French. And a Renault. So it will break. Lots.

Cheap motoring? Buy a basic old Polo or Golf.

5000 per annum sounds fairly reasonable to me. I have a vRS too and I do 3000 per year (cycle to work, walk to the shops) but it is great to have a lovely small car like the Fabia that makes driving out just for fun (and holidays) really great. Keep it serviced, polished and take it on a long run now and then and you have a rarer car to be proud of and enjoy.
