Hi chaps. Changed the rear brake discs and pads after 50k due to the discs looking scored and worn and original pads worn out. Anyway no problems for 3 weeks then today i noticed the drivers side brake had stuck on. Usual evil smell and the discs gone a shade of blue!! So put it back on the ramp and noticed the caliper arm was slightly pulled on. Pulled it off with my fingers and the wheels free. Tried the handbrake again and it seems to work fine.Disconnected the cable and tried the caliper arm on its own and thats fine. Reason im asking is ive removed the cable from the car and cant really fault it. And the parts people dont carry them as standard nore has my main dealer ever sold a cable!!!!

Anyone else had issues with the handbrake or caliper on this model?

Mine started 'mooing' after I had new discs and pads put on, and the calipers were modded under warranty. It's a well documented issue on here, although might be too late for a warranty claim in your case since I don't think a recall was issued or anything...

In my case, the warranty fix involved new pistons being fitted IIRC, so I don't know how much mileage there is in looking at the cable. Like I say, there's lots on here about mooing brakes, but basically you get either or both of rubbing / groaning as you pull away from a standstill, and/or when you go from forwards to backwards.

Mate please don't take this the wrong way But the rears will need to 'bed' in before the handbrake will give full bite:thumbup:

I had the same problem with my old zafira and after taking the brakes apart twice decided to leave em for a while and they slowly came to give more bite:)

i've got the same problem on the same side , fitted a new O/S caliper and it is still the same , push the handbrake lever back to the stop , and it will be alright for a bit , then stick on , the cable is free also , so no idea what to do next , i'm trying not to use the handbrake now

i had this problem, these are part numbers of an audi a3, they fit on to the rear handbrake lever to pull it off fully, i'll post pics up soon

so your implying the spring could have become weak hence not enough power to pull the lever off fully and thus causing the binding?? So are these springs only available from main audi dealer or can skoda get them too?

these must be extra springs fitted to Audis as they certainly aren't fitted to the Fabia

might have to pop into Audi on the way home tomorrow

The invoice just says 'rear caliper modification', and I assumed it was a new piston since I had a look and there was a nice shiny bit protruding from the caliper, but then again they might just have cleaned it when they were replacing the spring. All I know is that the brakes haven't done it since... :ne_nau:

this spring is just an audi part number, you should be able to get them in any vag dealer or specialist, think they were 3.50 each, but these are and where not fitted to any fabia, they are of an a3 and are one of them mod's that just seem to work

im guessing you just squeeze them up pop them into the holes and the spring will do the rest

I reckon. Having the handbrake off will probably help as you won't need to compress the spring so far, but it's nothing a pair of pliers wouldn't solve either way...

rang main dealer. They are currently on back order from the factory. Will take about a week. Getting mine from VW dealer in leicester.

Cheers matey, im aware of waiting for them to bed in, its been awhile now, but actually failed its 1st MOT when I got it back on the road as the rears where not working effiecently (sp?!) just drove it back from the test centre with the hand brake on basically. Parked it up, then took it back and it passed *just*

My O/S caliper has been dragging for 12 months - the outside pad on the O/S is a lot lower than the N/S and is even starting to break up in parts obviously because it gets so hot

I've also just ordered some from local VW dealer - £1.90 something each. no mention of a delay though.

Seeing how what I thought was a new piston is clearly on the wrong side of the handbrake arm, I'm now betting that it's just a shroud for a spring similar to the Audi part. What price a spring straight out of the factory, eh? :rotz:

I didn't notice any difference before or after, and it's a lot lighter than the one that operates my wife's drums, that's for sure!

these are quite hard to fit buy yourself on the ground, even if it jacked up hard a good pair of grips and a screwdriver for a volenteer to hold in the middle of the spring incase it slips, i got a chipped tooth the first time,
