Still a clunking noise

Featured Replies

I posted a thread on here recently about a clunking noise coming from the front of the car when i accelerate and decelerate in 2nd gear, also noticed the clunking/knocking noise when going over speed bumps. Had the anti roll bar bushes and droplinks replaced which Skoda said were the problem but the problem still persists and is really beginning to bug me.Anyone please!

have you had the break pads changed recently?

Could be the engine mounts. A dod of copper-slip usually helps if I'm not mistaken...

Is the noise still there in neutral doing 30mph, if so, it could be a loose drive shaft.

Indeed, get the driveshafts checked. My fabia has just been in the menders to have the driveshafts repacked with grease following a trackday. I suffered with a low speed noisy knocking from the front end.

Brake pads are fine only checked them last week,i'll try the 30mph in neutral idea on my way home later.Cheers for the help.

it's not necceserily the brake pads, but when i changed my pads on a previous furby, i cross threaded the torx bolts on the calipers which lead to a 'clunking' sound when i breaked or changed up gears.

Did the 30mph in neutral no noise what so ever,it only seems to do it after the car has been used, for example my 7mile trip to work this morning there was nothing but i can guarantee it will make the noise on the way home.Only noticed it since i changed the rear passenger wheel over with the front passenger one.Im confused, hopefully the menders can spot the problem. I was thinking as its only happening in reverse,2nd and 3rd could it be engine or gear box related??

i had this problem....then i tightened my wheel bolts...could have been a messy end LOL

I'll def check the wheel bolts before i head home then lol,be a result if thats what it is new laptop tomorrow then......Wouldn't it make the clunking all the time though and not only in certain gears?

not sure lol but with mine there were 3 wheel bolts not done up tight enough and the other two were starting to come a tiny bit loose! so when acceleraring the wheel kinda towed outwards a little and clunked and when braking it towed in and clunked again! lol only got to about 30mph and after about 5 mins i stopped the car and had a look and was like.. ohhhhhhhhhhh s******t and got the ratchet gun out lol!

Checked the wheel bolts all ok,im really beginning to think its gotta be mounts somewhere.Only seems to do it after car has been used like i said earlier and with the arb bushes and droplinks replaced 3weeks ago im starting to run out of options.Menders in the morning hopefully they can sort it and even better if it doesnt cost much, after the work plus a new cambelt and water pump im pretty broke.

Sounds exactly like either the gearbox side engine mount or dogbone mount to me. I had the same problem when dabbing on/off power in 1st and second (mainly second) and also over bumps in the road. I thought it was the exhaust knocking at first, but it definitely came from the front/engine bay when the engine wobbled about

Do not put copper slip on ANY rubber parts, copper slip will eat them away. You can try greasing the gearbox side engine mount with silicone grease (can grab it from maplins etc), there was a skoda bulletin about this and theres info dotted around this forum. It helped a little with mine, but in the end i needed both gearbox side mount and dogbone mount replacing. Skoda dealer charged me up the kaiser for this at about £250 :( Be a lot cheaper at an indy

To grease the gearbox side mount it will require the battery being removed, then the battery plate under it and possibly the air box for easier access. they're all held in by screws and bolts and is fairly easy if you're even slighlty mechanically minded.

Been to the menders it all good only lower bushes need to be replaced. They've split on the passenger side causing the knocking noise, apparently because of the increased torque in the lower gears it causes the knocking thats why i dont hear it when i get upto speed. The near side has just started to split so will get both sides changed at the same time.

last time i had a clunking the droplinks had come slightly loose, and were knocking, make sure these are tight, btw i couldnt move mine with my hand just checked it with a spanner and it tightened up, so just make sure its nipped up.

ooops just read this, also had this problem. :o

Maybe get some one to fit proper (Seat Cupra bushes) ones this time to stop this happening again soonish!

Im just having the standard bushes put back on apparently they come in an aluminium casing,so they cost £74.00 exc vat, getting both sides done total cost £257.Almost had a heart attack but i know if i went to a main dealer they would try and get £400 easy.If the bushes go in another 5 years/50k miles i wont care coz i wont own it.Saving for a re map now be done near xmas cant wait.
