MK4 Golf GT TDI PD150 v Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had a Fabia vRS a year ago and think of gonig back to a sporty diesel.

I'm thinking of the Golf GT TDI PD150 as it is a bit bigger than the Fabia.

Has anyone had both these cars, as I'd be intereted to see how they compare?

Would the Golf's handling feel soggy comparted to the Fabia?

Any opinions appreciated.

Thanks

If you can find one, look for a LEON FR (mk1) instead. I used to have one of these before my Fabia.

Compared to a mates Golf TDI 150 (MK4) the Leon was a firmer, sportier ride and IMO looks alot nicer (All Golfs look the same).

I miss my Leon :(

If I was going to go for a Leon, and knowing it was a diesel engine, id be more inclined to go for a earlier Cupra model TDi due to have 312mm already on, rather than the FR that came with the same brakes as the fabia/ibiza eeek!

Thanks, unfortunatley the Leons are very pricey, seen an 2005 30K one at a main dealers for £10K

I like the Golf as it's a bit of a Q car :D

I never understood why they didn't fit them to the FR TDI when the CUPRA TDI was the same car. Still a damn good car though, and the brakes are a relatively cheap upgrade.

The end of line FR's had the Cupra kit fitted and they held their price very well. Mine never lost a penny in value in 12 months, and only lost £500 over the next 6 months.

would have the leon fr imo better than a golf

What about non-vag sporty TD?

What about non-vag sporty TD?

I had a bad experience with a Renault 19 16v and promised never to buy another Renault.

Renault ain't that bad tbh, plus its got 266lb/ft

I've been looking at alternatives to the VAG range lately, and the new shape FIAT Bravo looks a nice motor (in black on the 18" rims).

Not bad prices either on 'drive the deal.com'

My missus had a Fabia vRS which I used to drive a lot and I now own a Golf 150pd. The Golf doesn't handle as well as the Fabia and has a fractionally slower throttle response due to the FMIC and slightly larger turbo, but once the Golf is on song it pulls harder and longer than the Fabia.

I am about to replace my suspension with brand new Golf anniversary 150pd suspension, also changing all the suspension bushes, front bushes to TT ones and normal ones, rear beam bushes to Fabia vRS ones. I will also be fitting Eibach roll bars front and rear. Hopefully this will sharpen the car up to Fabia vRS standards, but the mk4 Golf has never been a good handling car out of the crate.

The Golf isn't that much bigger than the Fabia luggage wise and they both weigh about the same, the Golf is about 30kg heavier.

If you are on the lookout for a Golf 150pd watch out for the chocolate camshaft and follower issue.

The 150s seem to eat their camshaft and followers, they are the same parts as the Fabia but they seem to fail a lot on the Golf 150pd. VAG revised the followers from November 2005 to a harder material so they obviously realised its a problem. Budget about £1k to get fixed or buy one that has already had the issue fixed.

Have you thought about a booted Golf, eg. an Octavia vRS or VW Bora? There is the new Golf GTD but that's silly money.

If you are wanting something the same size as the Furby, then why not a Seat Ibiza Cupra PD160?

to differentiate the models I would assume...

I would have a look on SCN (Seat Cupra.net) to find the differences.

This of course has nothing to do with the OPs question.

why look their?! perhaps parkers would be better!

Again Off topic but hey ;)

There is/was a long list of differences on SCN that i doubt Parkers would list in detail.

Things like the Cupra TDI having Square (ish) wing mirrors, and the FR TDI having 'tear drop' shaped ones... again, off topic but SCN would be the best place to look if you really wanted to know.

Personally i think i'd go for another Fabia over the Golf. The vRS looks different from every other Fabia, Yet ALL Golfs look the same (with the R32 being an exception).

Plus, every other car is a golf these days. Not so many Fabias around and even fewer with the vRS badge.

Beg to differ on that last bit - there seem to be loads round me... :ne_nau:

The advantage of all Golfs looking the same is once you de-badge it they make a good Q car.

They already have a FMIC so the route to hybrid power is cheaper, than the same upgrade on the Furby.

This is true, but i didn't see the OP mention the desire for 'Hybrid' Power, so i assumed this wasn't a consideration.

A £300 remap would see a good 165bhp putting it on par with the Golf for power.

Either way, both are good cars and have pros and cons to decide about.

Thannks very much for all the replies

Former are going to be too expensive sadly. Seat Ibiza Cupra PD160 would be ok, but in my eyes doesn't look anywhere a nice as a Fabia.

So the general consensus is the Golf won't handle as good as the vRS, so I guess i'll get another Fabster and get it Revoed :D

I had a look around for GT TDI 150 when I bought the Fabia but all the ones in my price range had stupid milage.

Golf wins.

Next question!

Golf wins.

Next question!

Why is that? :)

Better built, more space, more refined, better to drive and it's got 20bhp more :)
