Lumpy 1.9TDI PD105 whilst coming on boost

Featured Replies

Hi all, i've been suffering with a problem with my car for a few months now.

Where when the car starts coming on boost while driving gently it will stammer a little and then carry on.

My initial thoughts are that the vanes are sticking, as putting your foot down seems to clear the problem up.

But could a faulty EGR valve replicate these problems? Mines been leaking oil from under the diaphragmn since i bought the car, but its never caused an issue apart from the mess.

It seems to have gotten worse and now im thinking it maybe the EGR and not the turbo.

Does anyone have any experience of a faulty EGR valve?

From the EGR valve on the intake manifold....

I have a similar thing to yours also. Its what i think is a "stutter" and it comes at around 1800rpm and clears at 2500rpm under light acceleration but if booted at about 2000rpm i don,t get it.I have held it at this rev range on a motorway and it does definately stutter. Its like the Fabia vRS,s they suffer also at this rev range (BLT engine).I think its a common thing with the 1.9 but somewhere on here i have read a guy from europe says there is a software update to cure this but iam not sure there is.Iam certainly wanting to find out from my dealer though.

I dont believe its software related, as the problem still occurs after i had whatever brand of remap removed.

check the ht leads aren't mixed up. :-)

Very helpful matey, im not quite sure where i find the HT leads on a Diesel?

Oh yeaaaaaaaa, it doesn't have any! ;) :P

EGR is only active when at moderate throttle, like when round town. On acceleration it 'should' be inactive. Usually the EGR leaks when on it's way out - mine did. There's a little hole in the front of it and it spewed oil of of there.

In this case though it could be dodgy vacuum pipes or the vacuum box (this is on the drivers side suspension turret under the bonnet - a little black box where vacuum pipes plug into). Not common but I've known one fail before and this caused random boosting.

Could also be the MAF sensor - the one on the intake just after the air filter box. These normally cause a lack of power when on their way out but are quite cheap from places like ECP - I paid about £39 from there for mine on exchange.

Best way to start is with a diag. Chances are it'll bring something up. Do you know anyone with VAG COM? Failing that a cable is only £10 on eBay and the software is free to use in read only mode for faults etc.

Ben over at Shark Performance did a fault code scan when i had the powerful but unreliable remap from an unknown company removed and put back to standard after the Rolling Road Day.

Other than the obvious ones i've had all the time (Glow Plug Related) Nothing else arose.

By no means was there a lack of power on the Awesome GTI RR day, it pulled 151bhp at the wheels. The curve was smooth all the way along, and i found out why it was pluming smoke like a beech!

As for the vacuum box, this was replaced at christmas. When i thought this was the cause of my breakdown. I do have a spare one and i will try replacing this with the old one tomorrow.

I'd have thought if the diaphragm in the EGR was leaking, then there would be a lack of smooth operation.

My take on a EGR is that it opens whilst driving normally, and normally shuts off when under heavy acceleration?

I do know the turbo isn't in the best condition either, along the leading edge of the blades.

But i wouldn't have thought it would be that bad to cause a stuttering/surging whilst gently accelerating, unless the vanes are starting to become sticky.

Looks like im going to be replacing that again shortly, aswell as the EGR and the windscreen i cracked on saturday LOL!

Hi Browny. Mine does EXACTLY the same thing. It's a 57 plate with 12500 miles on the clock. I've had it from new.

It's starting to **** me off a bit now. I often find that it happens after changing gear. The revs drop then pick up followed by a little lurch.

Its due for its second service next month so I will mention it. Not sure where i'll be taking it yet.

Where do you have yours serviced. I may point them at this thread when I take it in.

Hi matey, i tend to self service as im around at 135k i dont have a warrenty to worry about lol.

I serviced mine on saturday just a oil and filter change, although the car runs better. The lurching happens more than once per gear change in second and third as im steadily working through the lower end of the revs.

I did notice today a hissing sort of noise, which came and went as the car jerked as i accelerated slowly. Once up the revs it clears up, i had noticed a pipe working its way out of the intercooler. But it didnt seem to cause any problems and the clips looked fine, as a matter of cause i've cable tied the two parts together so the pipe doesn't move. I've yet to try it out.

Mine did this (56 plate 105bhp 39k miles) when I bought this a couple of months back, some days stuttered a lot, others not at all, but recently the yellow check engine light came on.

Keith's in Leeds were great, fitted me in really quickly, diagnosed a faulty EGR valve, fitted it and I had a transformed car. No hesitation at all.

Now, after maybe 500 miles and 2 weeks, the stutter is back. :thumbdwn:

Same as most others here too, on light throttle, very noticeable on motorway cruising. And yes, it's really irritating!

I've done 17k in the car since buying it last year, and other than the other issues ive had. I've never had this problem at all.

It feels slightly as it did when it blew part of the boost hose clip off and was hanging half way out, but quite severely and alot of clattering noises as the car couldn't keep in check.

Its becoming rather annoying, as i dont know why i keep plastering money into the car. Maybe because i've spent so much on it already?

At £170 for a EGR valve, its going to put another huge dint in my pocket :(

Cant say i notice it on the Motorway

Here is the respective diagram out of Elsawin, where you can see the oily pipe:

llkrx0j.jpg

It is at the right end of tube number 14....is this a normal effect, this hose being covered in oil on the outside??

Non of that, as i dont have a Mk1 Octavia.

Well, since i did the cable tie bodge to the pipework going into the inlet of the intercooler.

I dont appear to have had any issues with it.

Its strange because it only appears under light throttle with me and only around 1800 - 2500rpm after that all is fine. Will happen if i try low down harsh acceleration but if i accelerate at 2000rpm for boost it won,t do it  or constant throttle on dual/motorway.Iam not really bothered about it as its done it since i got it at 10K miles and now on 31K.I will check with my dealer about this so called software update which apparently cures this but i haven,t heard of this.Just had all the intercooler seals done under warranty so i know its not air leak related and the MAF is 100% and the EGR doesn,t leak and theres no fault codes logged at all:confused:

Non of that, as i dont have a Mk1 Octavia.

Octavia I ? I also have the Mk II.....the diagram is showing the 1,9 TDI with engine code BLS .....

If there IS a software/firmware update that sorts this problem, is there an easy way to check if it has been installed? Like, can I check the version number or date somewhere/somehow?

Cheers

Can I just point out for anyone reading, the remap that Browny_37 had on his car was NOT one of ours and all I did was put it back to standard for him

Oh right, i thought it was from a Mk1.

I have the BJB series engine and both of the ports on the intercooler are on the lower side of the intercooler.

Sorry Ben, i didn't mean for it to read like that. I've now changed the wording to suit.

Hi all, i've recently travelled 270 miles this week. Mainly driving at speed on the motorway.

It seems to have cleared up somewhat, but i've had the odd slight kick whilst coming on boost.

I've just seen another thread regarding the cage mod, and i was wondering if this problem could be related to the MAF?

I've never had a faulty MAF sensor, so im not entirely sure on the symptoms.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the cage mod does, apart from applying dielectric grease to the terminals?

Smooths out the idle and acceleration and stops arc from connectors in plug and resistance.
