iPhone 3GS - Pros and cons

Featured Replies

Thinking about getting an iPhone so therefore after your opinions...

Does it sync OK with Outlook (Contacts, Diary, To-Do's, All email folders, Notes)?

Can I add multiply POP3 email accounts and have separate Inboxes for each?

Can it read/edit Word & Excel files?

Can it show PowerPoint files?

The battery concerns me as I tend to hammer it - when in the office my phone is always sync'd to the PC and charging, so never really goes through the recommended charge/discharge cycle therefore they never really lasts as long as they should before needing replacing. Taking "tools" a phone just to replace it's battery really doesn't appeal to me.

At the moment I'm using a TyTn II, but could do with a larger screen and slimmer profile.

As discussed... buy my unlocked and jailbroken, perfect condition 3G when I upgrade to a 3GS in December :D

I used to use mine with Exchange and it was great. Contacts, Calendar and all email folders. Dunno about notes.

Yes, you can have multiple pop3 / imap accounts with separate inboxes.

Can't edit Word / Excel files out of the box. You could use Google apps.

Again, google apps would handle powerpoint files, but there's probably a nicer solution.

Battery life is great on mine. I've been pleasantly surprised, having come from a Nokia 6230 (also great battery life). The key is to only turn on 3G, bluetooth and sshd when you need them I think. With a jailbroken one, you can have one click toggles for these right on the home screen.

I recently rolled out 60+ 3GS iPhones to our staff and so far they have been excellent.

I really love mine and find it very handy.

I've got mine running three mail accounts with separate inboxes just fine , including one Exchange server (you can only have one of these).

My only "complaint" is about the battery life - with wifi and bluetooth on it's very easy to flatten one completely in a single day if you use it a lot.

With them turned off the battery is much better.

What kind of policys do you have in place for corporate users?..

It forces a decent length PIN and short auto-lock times on the handset when you install the profile that sets up the Exchange account , and they can be remotely blocked and wiped from your Exchange server just as windows mobile devices can.

They aren't perfectly secure as users can still remove the profile or wipe the whole phone and jailbreak it then manually add their Exchange account but I'm not too concerned about that. IMO the ease of use outweighs any risks.

Some of the users think I can tell when they have Jailbreaked their handset as well after I caught them out. I can , but only cause I searched our mail archive for the word "cydia"

I presume your O2 corp tariff is unlimited data??

do you have any ballpark as to how much data the piephones use compared to XDAs...

ive been biiyachslapped by telephony before for my iphone munching thru a considerable amount of data.

The same is true of any current handset.

Hence why Apple didnt want 3G handsets on the Mk1 ;)

We do indeed have unlimited data useage.

I've not seen the bills yet , but I can have a look and see if I can find out when I'm in the office tomorrow.

If you could that would be great, just to get an idea of what their fiddling does.

my data useage before i got the iphone was £200 a month (but luckily the tarrif had free data), since i got the iphone i must hammer the iternet useage (makes the useage on my last phone look occasional lol) but not been billed for it as its part of the contract.

Is there an App that will allow the iPhone to Remote Desktop / Terminal Services into a Windows Server?

Having used this while on hoilday to sort out an clients server issue, I certainly can't be without it!

WinAdmin will do it, MS are working on their own app for the iPhone for RDP to.

One thing off at a tangent, last week we had a field engineer from the US working on an SCCM project with us and he had a Palm Pre .... it looked very impressive and worked like a charm. You can see where the iphone influence comes into WebOS on the Pre, after all it's the same dev team.

Yes, there is an rdp client

There's a Citrix client too.
