Cage Mod - revisited

Featured Replies

After another 100miles trip, can't but confirm it did well to my Octy.

I've decided to squeeze as much grease as possible within the plug :)

Next is the ECU, is there any DIY around on how to reach it, its connector, etc..?

  • 2 weeks later...

Also bought the DOW Corning stuff and applied it in my Octi, a friends A4 170TDI PD and his wifes Zafira CDTI.

All cars seem to respond on the trick. Audi and Opel were quieter/less harsh at idle.

At first I thought I didnt notice too much difference, but have to say now that the engine is running smoother especially at lower revs. Feels to pick up smoother and quicker too.

Good and cheap mod!!

I've had some variability in the car performance recently that I cant nail down to anything specific. Since I've removed the ECU's (I had 2 until recently) a few times, I think that I'll try the cage mod out in the connector there. Might get it performing at 100% all the time, who knows?

Ciao,

as I wrote elsewhere, last Sunday I cleaned contacts and filled with silicon grease all the 4 connectors I could find in the engine bay near the engine (one is the MAF, another is just near the DPF, btw).

Car is definitely better. I would say that this mod alone removed almost all the juddering and stuttering. In my experience this was better than a remap :)

With the ECU working on good signals the car finally runs as she should! I'd like to try to fill the ECU connector too but I'm a bit worried to damage anything.

Any particular hint or care on that?

yesssssss! In my own experience at low revs it is better than the mapping experience I've had.

BTW I tried on a very recent CR140 driven by a friend of mine. He reported a slight effect, perhaps not as big as I felt. But there are differences in car age, kms done and engine.

Cheap thrills are always gud 'uns....

Thought my mind was playing games with me, but after having done it a few days ago,I definately noticed a difference. The car is much more responsive, it pulls much better, and idles much smoother.

Thanks for this simple mod:thumbup:

Sorry to appear thick, but can someone please explain again where the connector is. Possibly a photo. I wouldn't mind giving it a go on my 140,000 mile PD140 before I trade it in. Then, if it works, I can then try it on the new one.

Cheers,

Steve.

Is there a "map" of all other electrical connectors to treat around the engine bay? I managed to find 3 other but only after at a quick view, so I expect some other will be lying around

I decided to do an Uber Cage mod on the Superb today (I know I'm in the Octy section btw) Repacked the MAF connector fully with Dow Cornings DC04, but then went round every electrical connector in the engine bay including the main ECU plug and did them all.

Doing the MAF has the usual results, but also doing the ECU plugs seems to have had an effect, the tick over is much smoother now, and it no longer needs 1 or 2 seconds cranking over, just fires up straight away.

So that's my car done, the mrs's car done and my bike. Good old VAG and their cheap tin plated connectors :D

Where does the ECU plug hide?

Where does the ECU plug hide?

Mines a Superb mate so it's on the right side of the engine bay, big effin thing with a locking lever on it.

Can't remember the location on an Octy, it's been a while, will have a look on ETKA

With my the mod did well also on my MAF gold plated connectors! It was a sunny day and could clearly detect the golden colour. Nevertheless after treating I got those nice results!

The ECU connector is simply a detach and replug matter or is it glued or whatever?

Would this work on a petrol car or is it a Diesel mod only?

If yes Fluffy you can do mine on Sunday :)

My dad told me his old Veccy 1.8 is much more responsive after a sort of Uber Cage (4 connectors, again, ECU excluded).

Had a friend over with his Golf IV 130pd @165, worked directly. Engine sounded much quieter and smoother.

Didnt do it to the petrol roomster yet, but will try.

Also had a response to the Zafira CDTI I did, it runs much nicer with the mod.

Thanks Maplins for the "Remap":rofl:

The ECU connector has two locking lugs top and bottom - you pull them sideways and it all pops off. Stiff first time round, not after that lol...

Didn't seem to make any difference to my car at all.
