Topping Up Coolant - Quick Question

Featured Replies

Hiya Guys

New to the forum but have used lots of the great advice on here. I've got a 1.4 Silverline.

Last night I changed the coolant sensor, and although stone cold, I have lost a little bit of coolant. It is now down to about a centremetre below the min level.I have gone and grabbed some G12 coolant from the local Skoda garage and he said as it is only that level, because of approaching winter he would just top it up to between Mid & Max with neat G12.Is this correct?

I only ask as I want to top it up before I start my 45 mile journey home. Or should I just add some standard tap water also?

Cheers

Drew

50:50 IMO but use distilled water instead of tap

Thanks for that, I couldn't remember which one to use - is distilled water such as evian etc fine? Is 1cm below the min line likely to cause issues? IE if I left it for another journey?

Evian is mineral water, not distilled, and I would advise against using it. Better to pick up a litre bottle from Halfrauds or your local motor factor

Why use Distilled water and not tap water?

At the temperatures the engine (and the coolant) runs, you're bound to have some evaporation and condensation elsewhere, and consequently have nasty limescale/mineral deposits in your otherwise shiny and clean aluminium engine block.

With time, said deposits will block up passages, get thermostats stuck (open or more worryingly closed!).

Typically the same problems most people in the UK have at home from hard water damaging appliances :)

If your only adding a small amount, I would just stick the neat G12 in as it will make little difference to the water/g12 mix.

As already said, tap water contains minerals which can cause build up over time. Worse in certain areas than others. Most places sell distilled water like Homebase, its used to top up some batteries also. Usually about 99p - £1.99 for 1litre

Exactly, do as he has suggested - you probably don't know the exact "strength" of the coolant that is in the system and I'd suspect that adding in a bit more G12+ will do more good than harm.
