vrs with slow turn over

Featured Replies

hey peeps,

im after a bit of advice/knowledge from ya

lately the vrs is getting very slow/sluggish at starting,2 slow turns then it fires.

it gets driven about say sunday, wednesday, friday

the general running seems fine aswell

any help would be very appreciated

cheers

simon

P.S the service is due in november

Weak battery?

Weak battery?

:iagree:

As above, check the electrolyte level or if getting on for 6 years old change the battery. Winter will probably kill it.

well guys ive checked the battery and the light/level is green

the cars a late 54 plate so would it need a new battery or can u suggest something else?

cheers

a power or earth cable fault could cause a similar fault , so check for corrosion at all the relevant terminals

also a faulty starter, easily checked by testing how much current is drawn when cranking

The green indicator doesn't really tell you much, other than the battery is accepting a charge, and the electrolyte level is correct. Over the years, antimony deposits form on the plates, and reduce cranking amps.

Easy test, try to start car with a known good battery using jumps leads.

Another battery vote. At 5 years old it will now be suffering.

Unbolt the terminals and a good wire brushing off battery posts and clamps but I still think you'll need new one.

If you've fitted a new battery, why have you left it for a couple off days?

i think he means he will leave the car a couple of days before trying to start it with the new battery fitted

Does that mean hes scared to try it.

just an update guys

right ive had the brand new battery on,had a full service but still the same so i took it to a VW/Audi garage, they scanned it on the machine but came up with no faults at all.they said it was the temp control switch and fitted a new 1 as this was a common fault

well a couple of days later tried it again hoping all was well and its the bloody same

just a really slow crank then it starts on say 3rd turn they big puff of smoke, its fine for the rest of the day then

anyone have any ideas?

cheers

simon

I don't know much past what you've already tried.

How is it at re-starting once it's warmed up? Could it be a glow plug issue? Like I said though, I don't really know my stuff.

once its been started its fine all day m8

The Temp Control switch in my opinion would have no bearing on Cranking speed & was just a Stab in the Dark.....As stated above, Clean up all Earthing points, Inner wings Etc & try again

Also try a Voltage cranking test as suggested by Moggy Tech, If the Voltage request is high & all earths are good, As is the Battery, It does sound like a lazy starter Motor ...

well ive just had the car back again as it was in the garage overnight to test it this morning

it started fine and its been on the machine again which came out with no faults engine wise

they suggested new battery or starter motor-its had a new battery,if i have a new starter motor at £140 ish i cant exchange/send it back if that will cure it or not

ive checked all the earths whick are all clean

this started happening about 5 months or so ago slowly

any more help plaese?

cheers for ya help

Have you had a cambelt change recently?

another good update guys

ive been 'priming' as you say turning the ignition on off about 5 times allowing the filter to fill up with fuel and it started like the 2nd crank,a bit spluttery but it started no problem,so i believe whens its been stood for a few days its not getting enough fuel to start it,but once it has been started like i said before its fine

does this mean a new diesel pump or something or do i just put up with it?

cheers

Again I don't know my stuff, but I do have a Fab Vrs and that recently had its full service 80K which included a diesel filter change, seemed a bit happier at starting but then I never had the problems you are having. It might be worth a look though as it could be clogged up or one of the pipes to it might be pinched? But seems strange it only happens in the mornings if it was that.

Also Rob. mentioned the glow plugs, it is colder this time of year (but then if you have turned the key and waited for the light to go out several times that would probably dispel that theory?)

the fuel could be draining back when the car is left overnight, hence long crank, can you hear the fuel pump in the tank priming when you turn the ignition on ?

yes m8 its quite noticeable, ive been turning the ignition on/off about 5 times then it starts on the second crank so it was probably nowt wrong with the battery/starter in the first place
