what I meant would this too do the job for the Octy

Yes it is the same tool, they do several different tools to fit different cars so just make sure you get the correct tool for the VAG range, you previously stated:

But I dont think their are any bargains to be had on ebay

you may as well go the shops these days

When i bought mine Halfords was the cheapest (local) place to get it, eBay was dearer when you added in the postage, so i would of agreed with your statement above, but with the eBay seller doing them at a good price it now works out cheaper - so a bargain IMO.

I have change today the suspendion (springs and shocks) and the brakes (discs and pads). Anyway I did not finish, the rear calipers are not in place because I need this rewind tool (pushing and twisting with something else will not work at all)

So in the mornig buy the caliper rewind tool and change the brake fluid.

Ok so for you who wand go DIY with the brakes for octavia 2 in order to change the discs you need to remove the caliper cariers. For front one removing one bolt and lose the other one will do. On thr rear take off the bolt from suspension arm,remove spring, then the lower one from the shock absorber, to have acces to the 2 bolts that are holding the carrier, both have to be removed. The rest is like in the links that I posted.

The rear looks pretty much like my old Meganne front calipers. The only problems there was finding a thin enough spanner to fit in the gap between the caliper and slider.

The discs were more of a problem. The securing screws were either torqued too high initially or from rust on the thread protruding through, they'd seized and I sheared one (of the two) and had to drill it out. The wheel bolts hold the disc in place when it's all assembled so no great loss, but it was a hassle at the (first) time.

BTW you should use some plastic coated gardening wire to suspend the caliper from the coil springs when free, *not* let it hang from the hose as shown.

boy does it! wasted time following haynes today twisted and pushed like buggery to no avail but having seen this, off to buy the tool and go again, not letting the b get the better of me.

Sorry to revive an old thread. I am searching for the method to determine my rear brake size. I have looked at the sticky on the MK2 Octavia thread but the Brake info has been removed for the time being.

 

I want to replace my read disc and pads since there seems to be a lot of rust build up around the disc lip. Each time I go for a service/health check, the report always indicates this but it doesn't affect my MOT. I just want to change them since the rears haven't been changed since new and its at 58k (5.5 years). My pads do not need replacing but this is more for my peace of mind.

 

Could someone please indicate what I am looking for to determine between the two sizes? I have a late 2010 (Nov) Petrol VRS, CCZA. I will keep searching the threads in the meanwhile.

Not really helping you here, but if you change the disks I'm pretty sure you need to do the pads as well, factor that into your cost.

Look at the PR codes on the sticker on the boot floor or in the front of the service manual. One of the codes will be for the rear brakes and should match up with what comes up on the ECP website.

Thanks for the heads up! I think my line about 'peace of mind' was misleading. I earlier mentioned I was changing my disc and pads, I was just trying to suggest its not because the pads are worn down. I will definitely be changing the pads too and I yes you are correct, it will drive up the costs but that's ok.

For instance my car has - 1KF = Disc breaks, rear.

 

Then when you search on ECP for rear brake discs for an Octavia 2.0 diesel you should be able to see info under "Fitment Detail" a list which includes things like:

  Diameter (mm) = 282

  PR Number = 1KF, 1KP

 

From doing this I now know my rear discs are 282mm

Hmmmm. I don't have the sticker on the service book.

 

I'll have to pester the dealer when the car is in for its service and ask them to eyther measure them or if they've got any old discs and pads front and back lieing around.

My boot sticker got wet when I spilled screen wash in the boot but I also have a copy of the sticker inside my service book so check if you have one in there too.

Just had a look in the car. The lable has washed off. Luckley enough my work car (which is another Octivia diesel!) has the lable in the service book. Had a look on euro car parts, ive got 2 rear disc sizes! :/

1U is the MK1 and 1Z is the MK2 Octavia.

1KT should be 272mm.  you are right, your PCD is 112mm.

I attempted to check the condition of my rear brake discs and pads today by removing the caliper, albeit I could see it from the caliper side once I removed the wheel.

 

I removed the two caliper bolts (mine was a 13mm bolt and the one to hold still, typically a 15mm bolt, was a square peg) and attempted to remove the caliper from the disc.

 

It just would not budge. I had put the handbrake down, tried to lever it off but still no luck! What else am I missing? Is there another bolt or screw I am missing, should I also remove the handbrake cable from the assembly?

 

I have checked that the hex screw holding the disc to the hub comes off just to avoid further frustration when I come to change my discs and pads.

The caliper slides off away from the centre of the hub towards the outside, leaving the pads in situ on the carrier, so dont lever the pads, lever the caliper. Just twisting the caliper clockwise/anticlockwise by hand is usually enough to get it off. You dont need to detatch the cable, but if the caliper lever is not fully off, then you can slacken the cable further behind the drivers handbrake lever. On mine you remove the ashtray at the rear of the jumbo box, use a torch to see the 10mm long nut which you can slacken to adjust.

Pop the ashtray down beyond the normal stops, then pull the bottom left out and move the tray to the left out of the lug to remove.

Ive managed to measure the discks on my hatch back. Bout 30cm on the front and 26cm on the rear. Does that sound bout right to any one?

So does that mean that I should not try to remove the handbrake cable from the lever at the caliper? I had already loosened the cable from behind thr jumbo box as you described but it didn't budge. I think I'll try to remove the cable end, I saw it was a step on workshop manuals. Just wondering if someone else had removed it.

the caliper is only held on by the two 13mm bolts, you should only have the hand brake in the off position and thats it you dont need to touch the cable at all unless the brakes are binding ie the wheel dosnt spin when the hand brake is released, the caliper is probably seized in position mine were on the rear of my vrs i had to lever them off it was a bit of a pain but they came off along with some of the caliper paint ,

 

one point to note my car is a vrs and i had to remove the caliper carriers to take the rear discs off due to there size this was a massive pain in the butt i had to buy a three foot long breaker bar and a short reach m14 spline bit to loosen the carrier bolts as they were solid and there is limited space as well but i did it on my drive with just a trolley jack .
